Revenue collection from the mining sector is set for a historic record as the government eyes an annual turnover of over 600bn/- during the 2020/21 financial year.

Mining sector, springing up at an average of 17.7 percent, is the fastest growing industry followed by construction, thanks to the reforms spearheaded by President John Magufuli’s administration.

Minister for Minerals Mr Doto Biteko revealed that the government expects to generate more than 600bn/-, the highest collection ever registered since the country’s independence.

The minister made the revelation yesterday when he visited the ongoing Geita Mining Exhibition at Bombambili grounds on the outskirts of the town.

He said the mining sector’s contribution to the government’s coffer rose from 161bn/- in 2014 to 528bn/- in 2020. The sector accounts to 52 percent of all foreign currency and commands 51.9 percent of the value of the exported products.

“The reforms in the mining sector have accelerated considerable transformation in the industry. Currently, tables have also turned as majority Tanzanians are now involved in exporting minerals,” he said.

According to the minister, Tanzania, which ranks third in Africa and 18th in the world, is among countries with massive gold reserves.
“We have phased out bureaucracies and I can confirm that we now receive foreigners, who want to sell their gold into our markets,” he said.

Under the new reforms, the government established mineral markets across all the regions. In Geita alone, there are nine gold markets.
He lauded the Geita regional and local authorities for organising the unique platforms that bring together small scale miners, entrepreneurs and large mining firms to showcase their technologies as well explore more opportunities in the sector.

Geita Regional Commissioner Eng Robert Gabriel explained that the exhibition was basically designed to help small miners and entrepreneurs in the mining sector meet with the markets.

“We meet here to understand our stages for growth as well as challenges we face,” he said.

Gold worth over 1.96bn/- transact every day in the region’s gold markets, according to the RC.

Eng Gabriel said the contribution of smallholder miners is set to increase should the group adopt latest technology in their line of operation. He urged banks to support the group to be able to improve its technologies.

Meanwhile, Eng Gabriel urged small scale miners to form partnerships and build one large mining company that can help create more jobs, improve productivity and livelihood of the people and the community at large.

National Bank of Commerce (NBC) Director of Retail Banking Mr Elibariki Masuke assured that the financial institution was ready to work with the small scale miners as well as entrepreneurs in the mining sector, stressing that the bank was at an advanced stage of setting up a special package for the mining sector players.

Shanta Gold announces dividend

Tanzania miner Shanta Gold (SHG) will hand shareholders a 0.1p payout next month off the back of higher profits and its recent net cash position. The company announced on Tuesday its 2020 cash profit was $64m (£46m), a one-third increase on the year before. Shanta chief executive Eric Zurrin said the company could now afford expansion and exploration spending as well as a dividend, given the higher earnings.

Shanta was not fully exposed to the higher gold price last year because of its high levels of forward sales, which cut its average sale price to around $1,500 an ounce (oz), compared to a gold price that got as high as $2,000/oz. Shanta’s shares were up 5 per cent on the news.

GRUMETI AIR FLIGHTS PERMIT FOR UNIQUE SAFARI COMBINATION OF BIG GAME AND PRIMATES

As an important milestone in creating a “luxury network” by connecting all the top destinations in East Africa in an efficient, reliable and professional way, Grumeti Air is proud to announce the addition of the latest jewel to the crown: from June 2021 Kigali (Rwanda) will be connected directly with the Grumeti Reserves and the rest of the Serengeti.

The flight will operate every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and will serve by default only Sasakwa, Seronera, Kogatende and Lamai, in order to guarantee the usual streamlined operation with exact timings.

However, other Serengeti stops may be evaluated on request, on a case by case basis.

The aircraft will leave the Serengeti in the middle of the morning and land in Kigali by 12:00 local time (CAT), returning to the Serengeti in the middle of the afternoon.

Immigration procedures in Tanzania will be carried out in Musoma (MUZ).

For the detailed timings and fares you can download the complete schedule at the bottom of this email.

Additional late afternoon flight from the Serengeti

In combination with the above mentioned Kigali flight we are also adding an additional 16:15 flight, which will be the last flight out of the Serengeti, hence the best option for guests leaving from Kilimanjaro (JRO) with KLM at 21:30 or Qatar, now taking off at 23:25.

Like for Kigali, this flight will operate only on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Fares adjustments

With the release of this schedule update some of the fares have been slightly changed, compared to the previous versions. But worry not! The good news is that all the fares were either reduced or kept as the past season.

Can’t find the destination you need? Talk to us!

We will always try to go the extra mile to stretch our schedule’s backbone and accommodate specific requests, such as additional stops in the Serengeti area or custom-tailored flying times, so do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to assist.

However, our commitment remains to offer a service very different from the traditional multi-hop “daladala” flying safari model the market is used to. This is why we will evaluate each additional stop on a case by case basis.

The fares for the extra stops on request can be also found inside the schedule.

Still flying daily, despite COVID-19!

Notwithstanding the obvious challenges ,Grumeti Air has been ensuring all its essential connections in the Serengeti area, even during the unfortunate contraction of travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even now, heading into the low season, we are still operating a daily morning flight into the Serengeti and a daily afternoon flight out of the Serengeti.

The latter could be operated at 14:00 for connections with Ethiopian or at 16:30 for KLM and Qatar.

The actual flight time is decided on a first-come-first-served basis.

In spite of the reduction of the flight frequency, our commitment to offer to our guests the most direct and comfortable connections for an unforgettable flying safari remains unchanged.
