Boss: We'll cope with injuries

Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing to reshuffle his defensive pack as his squad's strength in depth is put to an early test.

Both central defensive pillars Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand were substituted in Sunday's 2-1 win at West Brom while right-back Rafael had previously joined left-back Patrice Evra on the sidelines after dislocating his shoulder in training on Friday. Evra should be back for the clash with Tottenham but Ferdinand will be out for around a month-and-a-half, thus presenting more opportunities for the younger defenders in the Reds' ranks.
"We've had a torrid two or three days," Sir Alex admitted to Sky Sports. "Rafael hurt his shoulder in training and is out for 10 weeks as he's going to need an operation.

"Rio has hurt his hamstring and will be out for six weeks. With Vida, we don't know whether it's a nerve problem with his calf or not. He'll have that checked tomorrow. He could be out a couple of weeks. But with Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones here, it's a godsend to be honest with you. Also, Patrice Evra will be back next week, he'll be fit, so I've got options."

Wesley Sneijder tells Man Utd: I'll take pay cut

WESLEY SNEIJDER has slashed his pay demand to make sure the Manchester United deal goes through.

The worried Dutch star, 27, looked to have blown his chance of leaving Inter Milan by asking for £200,000 a week.

Sneijder is now prepared to slash that demand by £60,000 a week.

It would still making him the second highest paid star at United - behind Wayne Rooney on £250,000 a week.

United offered Sneijder a contract last month and Inter were happy to sell at £35million.

But the Premier League champs could not agree on Sneijder's pay.

The attacking midfielder was sure they would come back with a new offer but that has not happened.

[h=2]ALEX FERGUSON believes his latest crop of young guns will keep the trophies flowing at Manchester United.[/h]
Fergie has always been willing to put his faith in promising players and has been rewarded with success after success as a result.
With Rio Ferdinand and skipper Nemanja Vidic sidlined for Monday night's clash with Tottenham, the Scot will again turn to youth to plug the gaps.
Chris Smalling, 21, will play at right-back while 19-year-old Phil Jones will partner Jonny Evans in central defence. Evans is just 23 and Ferguson has vowed to keep faith with another youngster, 20-year-old keeper David De Gea, despite his clanger against West Brom last weekend.

The United boss said: "We were always aware we had players who were coming to the end of their careers. That has been on the horizon for us for quite a few years. "We knew it was going to happen, you don't want it to, but it does and there's nothing you can do about it. Age catches up with us all. "So we've replaced the players who have left us and we've still players at the club in their 30s, which is a lot of experience. "It is a very young team at the moment but it's one full of energy and of great ability. I'm enjoying watching them." Fergie added: "I'm not worried about the young players filling in at the back.

"Evans has ample experience, of course, and has been at the club since he was 12. He's played plenty of first-team games. "Jones has the experience of playing for Blackburn last season in the Premier League. "I thought he and Smalling were the stars for the England Under-21s in the summer. Smalling also had a fantastic first season with us and he's continued his progress this year. "So I have absolutely no issues whatsoever with playing those guys."

Man Utd v Tottenham, Monday 8pm

Patrice Evra returns to the line-up after missing the season-opening win at West Brom with an ankle injury. With Rio Ferdinand unlikely to return until next weekend due to a hamstring injury, and with captain Nemanja Vidic out for up to five weeks with a calf problem, youngsters Phil Jones and Jonny Evans will form the centre-back pairing.

Darren Fletcher (virus), Antonio Valencia (ankle) and Javier Hernandez (concussion) are all closing in on a return, but are not yet ready. Michael Owen is out with a back problem, whilst Rafael faces up to 10 weeks on the sidelines after undergoing surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder.
