Top of the league: Red Devils is most hated company in Britain

Manure have topped a new league table, but it is not one they are going to be proud of. The Barclays Premier League leaders are now the most hated company in the country. They are more hated than the only people in the country who probably earn more than the club's multi-million pound stars - bankers. In a survey of 1,000 UK adults, 26 per cent said they hated Manure compared to 23 per cent who cannot stand budget airline Ryanair, the next most despised company.

Most hated: Manure may have the biggest crowds
and a winning record but their success and power alienates many

There is also plenty of resentment for companies who seem to be making big profits while the rest of the country suffers - the third most hated firm is British Gas. Not surprisingly, Britain is also seething at the bankers living it up on big bonuses, with 17 per cent naming RBS and 16 per cent citing Lloyds as financial giants they cannot stand. The poll, conducted by Online Opinions for The People, showed no love lost either for chains who appear to be taking over the nation's high streets - 19 per cent hate McDonalds and 14 per cent hate Starbucks.

But, perhaps surprisingly, Brits do not have the same feelings about other retail giants like Primark, Ikea and Tesco, all of which came out well in the survey. Reasons for hating big business vary, according to the responses, with 61 per cent hating banks for their bonus culture, 54 per cent having a downer on oil companies for petrol prices and 51 per cent who can't stand utilities for hiking up energy bills.

Manure may have the biggest crowds and a winning record but their success and power alienates many others from across the country. In both north-west England and London they are hated by 31 per cent - though many of these are probably supporters of their biggest rivals. That figure falls to 22 per cent in the South West and 23 per cent in East Anglia. Ryanair gets the most negative response from Londoners where 31 per cent hate the airline, compared to just 13 per cent of those in the north-east.

Network Rail is most unpopular in the commuter heartlands of the south-east, while BT gets the thumbs down from 20 per cent in Scotland, but only 8 per cent in Wales. A spokesman for Online Opinions said: 'It is not surprising that so many big companies are hated by so many people when you consider the ways in which they make themselves unpopular. 'Manchester United is possibly a victim of its own success and the way it is viewed by passionate fans of its rivals but it is different for banks and utilities. 'Banks get billions of pounds to rescue them from the public then go and splash out millions on bonuses while the rest of the country is in recession - no wonder they are so disliked. 'And utilities keep raising household bills at a time when people can afford them the least yet they still seem to be making lots of profits. 'With other companies, the reasons are more personal. Ryanair is probably the most popular airline in Britain thanks to cheap fares yet passengers still moan about having to pay for their luggage or booking by credit cards.'

Sir Alex expects summer buys

Sir Alex Ferguson expects to sign "two or three" new players for Manchester United this summer.
The manager revealed this during a press conference in New Jersey, where he announced the club's pre-season tour of the USA.
When asked if he expects to have the funds to strengthen his squad in the next transfer window, Sir Alex replied:
"We have certain targets in mind at the moment anyway. I think two or three will be fulfilled, there's no question about that.
"The Glazer family have always been very supportive of our desires to improve the team."
The manager went on to talk about the club's track record of acquiring top young players and developing them at Old Trafford.
"What we are good at is bringing young players to the club, like Chicharito for example. If you look at how, over the last six to eight years, we've brought in young players like Ronaldo, Rooney – okay, one was seventeen, the other was eighteen – we're good at that. I don't see why we should change from what we're good at.
"We will continue [to buy players], without question, and when the opportunity does arrive and we identify the right young players, that's the way we'll go."

It remains to be seen which areas of the squad Sir Alex's targets are intended for, although he did suggest his attacking ranks are currently well stocked.
"In the present situation, with the likes of Chicharito, I think we have possibly some of the best young strikers in the country. Danny Welbeck, who's at Sunderland at the moment, is an excellent young prospect. And the boy Mame Diouf who's at Blackburn is another good prospect.
"We're particularly strong with young strikers at the moment for some strange reason. Sometimes it works that way."

Internationals: Welbeck's bow

Danny Welbeck came off the bench to make his England debut in the 1-1 draw with Ghana at Wembley.
Our young striker, who has enjoyed an impressive campaign on loan at Sunderland, earned glowing praise from coach Fabio Capello afterwards.
"Welbeck, for me, will be another really important player for England," said Capello. "Physically, technically he will be really important for Manchester United because he is a really good player. He can improve, he wants to improve.
"I monitored him last year and I always thought he was an important player. He played right wing last year and played very well. This friendly game was the moment to see the value of him."
Jonny Evans battled on despite a calf injury as Northern Ireland drew 0-0 with Slovenia. Corry Evans also performed well as the brothers combined to almost create a late winner for Chris Brunt. Both United men picked up a rating of '8' in the Belfast Telegraph for their efforts.
Darron Gibson was a 65th-minute substitute in Republic of Ireland's 3-2 defeat to Uruguay but was unable to alter the scoreline.

Papers: Talk of the Treble

Injuries make Treble harder than in 1999
Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted it will be far harder for Manchester United to land the treble this season than it was in 1999. United still have the chance to emulate their historic achievements of 12 seasons ago, even though they must overcome Chelsea in the Champions League, Manchester City in the FA Cup and stay top of the Premier League. But it is not Ferguson's opponents that bother him so much as the mounting injuries he is having to contend with. "It is going to be more difficult than it was in 1999," he said. "We didn't have the injuries we do now. There is a great desire to do it but we have so many injuries to defenders at present. We will never give in, though. No matter what happens, you always feel Manchester United will score in the last minute. We must have a chance but it is more difficult than it has ever been."
Simon Stone, The Independent
Elsewhere, The Guardian report Danny Welbeck made his senior debut for England last night in the 1-1 draw with Ghana. Welbeck, whose parents are both Ghanaian, was booed by the visiting fans for his apparent decision to forge a career with England (the country of his birth) instead of Ghana. As it was only a friendly, however, Welbeck is still eligible to play for the Black Cats.
The Mirror claim United are interested in Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen, while the Express say Sir Alex will monitor Javier Hernandez closely in the next few weeks to make sure the Mexican avoids burnout.

Chicharito tipped to reach 25 goals

Paul Scholes knows a good player when he sees one. And it didn't take long for him to conclude that Javier Hernandez would end up with 25 goals in his first season for United.
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Scholes made the prediction after watching Hernandez's pre-season goalscoring debut against the MLS All-Stars in the USA last July.

Rooney, Wes and Carrick tell all

Wayne Rooney, Wes Brown and Michael Carrick talk to Inside United about life as a Red and tales from Carrington...
Who have been your players of the year for United? Berba, Nani and Vida have been mentioned by fans…
Carrick
: I'd go for Nani because of his goals, assists and overall performances this season. He's made a great contribution.
Rooney: I'd say Berba. He's scored a lot of goals for us including some really important ones and us forwards need to stick together!
Brown: It's a difficult one, but I've got to go for Vida again, closely followed by Nani and Chris Smalling, who has done really well in his first season.

Do you ever have dreams about games or certain moments in a season?
Rooney
: The day before a game I always ask Albert [the kitman] which kit we'll be wearing - shirt, shorts and socks so I can try to visualise the game and scoring a goal.
Brown: Yeah he wakes up shouting ‘yes' like he's celebrating a goal!
Carrick: I sleep a lot better before games than I did when I was younger. I've never really got nervous, but when I was younger I always had that feeling of excitement and I just couldn't wait for the game to come. Now, after a week with the kids I sleep very easily!

Do you ever have a little reflective moment during a game when you look up, see a packed stadium, and have to pinch yourself that you're a professional footballer playing for Manchester United?
Brown
: You don't really think about that in a game because you're just thinking about getting the job done.

Rooney: Yeah as Wes says there isn't really time in a match unless someone is maybe down injured for a while.
Carrick: Sometimes if you're playing in a really big game and you're winning comfortably and there's a break in play, you might take a minute to look around the ground especially if the atmosphere is really good. But most of the time, like the others said, you're just focused on doing your job.

Whenever we see pictures taken at the training ground it looks like you have a heck of a laugh alongside the hard work you put in. Is that a fair reflection?
Rooney
: Yes definitely. It's just a great club to be at and be part of. There's always a lot of banter going on, most of it aimed at Wes.
Brown: Yeah it is!

Apparently Wayne and Fletch are always up to things, is that true?
Brown
: I'd include Nani in that too.
Carrick: Ando as well…
Rooney: Me and Fletch lead each other on...
Brown: They're like two little kids.
Rooney: Carrers [Carrick] is always there just smiling in the background...
Carrick: You can't get too involved because you know it'll come back to haunt you so I like to keep a safe distance away.
Rooney: Yeah, Carrers is the one stirring things up and me and Fletch are the hit men.
Carrick: And Wes is the one who takes it all!
Brown: Not all of it! I don't mind though because we always have a good laugh. We have to give one of the kit men John Campbell a mention too. We give him a lot of stick every day but he takes it brilliantly and is a really top man.

Do dodgy items of clothing still get hung up in the dressing room?
Rooney
: Not as much now.
Carrick: The thing you have to be ready for is sweaty socks and strappings being launched at you after training.
Giggsy seems to be a god-like figure in the dressing room. Are you allowed to take the mickey out of him or is he untouchable?
Rooney
: His locker isn't!
Carrick: No-one does anything to Giggsy, really, do they? There's that respect thing for him.
Brown: It's the same with Scholesy.
Carrick: They still get involved in the banter. Giggsy can be quite quiet but then he'll throw in a very dry one-liner.
What's been the funniest moment at Carrington ever?
Rooney
: It'll have to have involved Gary Neville…
Carrick: Someone's trainers got cut up once didn't they… [All laugh]
Rooney: Me and Fletch cut through a pair of Wes' trainers one day and pushed them back together so it looked like nothing had changed. But when he picked one of them up to put on, the heel just came off in his hand! [All laugh]
Brown: I got them back though, don't worry!

De Gea's agent confirms United talks

March 31, 2011

By ESPNsoccernet staff

Manchester United have held talks over the signing of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea, according to the player's agent.

PA PhotosDavid De Gea: €20 million release clause

United's current No. 1, Edwin van der Sar, will retire at the end of the season and De Gea is one of the star names pencilled in to replace the out-going Dutchman.
De Gea, 20, has established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper at Atletico ahead of Sergio Asenjo since breaking into the first team in 2009 and has been watched by United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele on numerous occasions. Sir Alex Ferguson also saw De Gea in action when Atletico played Valencia in September last year.
With reports circulating that United have made a £17.5 million offer for the Spain U-21 international, his agent, Hector Rincon, revealed that the Premier League leaders have been in contact and that their offer would meet De Gea's release clause.
"Well, we did have talks with Manchester United but, first of all, they always look for an agreement with the club," Hector Rincon told sport.co.uk. "Anyway, most of the biggest European teams have shown interest in David de Gea."
Asked if Atletico would be willing to part with their highly-rated goalkeeper, Rincon said: "You would have to ask the club. What I can tell you is that his release clause now is €20 million, but I have no idea if the club would sell him for less.
"Right now, the player has a contract with Atletico Madrid and if Manchester United or any other team want him they will have to reach an agreement or pay the whole release clause."
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo, in response to the reports of United's interest, suggested that they may not follow through with a firm bid. He said: "I am looking at a house in the Canary Islands, but that doesn't mean I am going."
Rincon also reiterated - as he told ESPNsoccernet last year - that Wigan Athletic once made an offer for De Gea and that recently all the top clubs in England have shown an interest.
"Well, some time ago, before he became an important player in Atletico, Wigan made an offer, but the club rejected it," the agent said. "Recently, I don't want to say any names but all the big clubs in England and in Europe have asked about him."
