De Rossi keen to make £18m move to Manchester United
Daniele De Rossi's representatives have sounded out Manchester United to establish whether the Premier League leaders would consider an £18million move for the Roma midfielder this summer. The 27 year-old, who has played 63 times for Italy, is considering leaving the Serie A side he has supported since childhood after a turbulent three years in which his father-in-law was shot and killed in a gangland revenge attack and he separated from his wife, Tamara. United, like Real Madrid, hold a longstanding interest in the Roma vice-captain but have been consistently informed that he would not consider leaving the club where he started his career and his father, Alberto, remains a youth team coach. Both clubs have now been informed, though, that De Rossi is prepared to leave the Italian capital in a bid to escape the troubles that have enveloped his life away from the game. Jose Mourinho, the Real manager, is thought to be keen to pair the player with Xabi Alonso, while Sir Alex Ferguson will be given funds this summer to strengthen his squad, with a replacement for Paul Scholes, along with a goalkeeper and a central defender, likely to be a priority. Though his age and price may not appeal to United's desire to bring in players with high resale values, De Rossi's undisputed quality would tempt Ferguson, who has struggled to settle on a central midfield partnership in recent years.

The Telegraph say Sir Alex is also believed to be looking into the possibility of signing Shakhtar Donetsk's Douglas Costa and Blackpool's Charlie Adam.

The Daily Mail discusses a possible United departure with Galatasaray reportedly keen to sign United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak. The paper also claim the Reds will monitor Desportivo Brasil midfielder Rafael Leao, 17, who trained with the club last week, and also say United are outlining a deal for 16-year-old Chilean striker Angelo Henriquez from Universidad de Chile.

Rio could face Chelsea

Rio fit for treble bid
Rio Ferdinand could give Sir Alex Ferguson a boost in his quest to guide Manchester United to the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble by making an early return from a calf injury after flying to Germany to see the leading specialist, Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, for treatment. Ferguson had said this month that the 32-year-old central defender's season could be over with the news that he had suffered another injury setback. Ferdinand visited Müller-Wohlfahrt, the club doctor at Bayern Munich, on Monday for what is understood to have been an injection in his back to try to solve the calf problem he suffered in United's league match against Aston Villa on 1 February. Regarding Ferdinand's calf injury, Ferguson said this month: "It's just not responding. Sometimes [calf] injuries can be troublesome. Rio has been out for six weeks now; it's going on two months. We are not looking short term. He's hardly training yet and it looks to me like we'll be lucky to get him back fit for some part of the season." It is now thought that the player hopes to be back running soon. He is under medical supervision at United and the club's next game after the international break, the visit to West Ham United on Saturday week, may come too soon. But, if Ferdinand does respond positively to treatment, then there would be real hope he could be fit to face Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-final, in the second leg on 12 April, before the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley four days later.

EDWIN VAN DER SAR has ruled out a return to Ajax after he retires.

The veteran keeper plans to stay at Manchester United in a non-playing role.
Van der Sar, 40, will quit at the end of the season but will not be making good on a 12-year-old pledge to return to Amsterdam just yet.
He said: "I'm not going back to Amsterdam, though it would be very comfortable there with Frank de Boer, Danny Blind and Dennis Bergkamp.
"When I left 12 years ago, I said I would return but I did not know then what great years I would have with Manchester United.
"I might occasionally visit training with them but I will not be going regularly."
Instead, Van der Sar is mapping out a role with United.
He added: "It may be that I'm going to give Manchester United clinics in Asia, where the club is very popular, or something in commerce.
"I think this is interesting. I have already held some talks."
