Tofauti kati ya LVG na Man City na Chelsea ni kuwa wenzake walitumia pesa nyingi kugombania ubingwa yeye anatumia pesa nyingi kurudi ECL ambayo na yenyewe hadi sasa kuna uwezekano Man United wakaikosa. WHAT EXACTLY IS VAN GAAL'S PHILOSOPHY
--> I am going to start by saying, I'm not surprised that we lost yesterday. Looking at how United have been playing this season, it was only a matter of WHEN and not IF we lose a game. But that loss had me thinking, what exactly is Van Gaal's philosophy; the word that he cant fail to mention in every press conference. LvG has used 6 different formations, 31 different players and long balls to Fellaini as a Plan B. 8 months into the job, he still doesn't know his strongest/preferred Starting XI nor does he know what is our best formation, neither does he know the best playing position for some of our key players. So what exactly is going on at Man United?
--> As recently as last April, the suggestions were that Van Gaal was wedded to the Dutch system of 4-3-3. Yet he has used six shapes at United, but never 4-3-3. Or, for that matter, the regulation 4-4-2 he deployed in 23 successive games when Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga on his watch. He has a reputation as a serial winner but so far he has been out-performed, and yesterday he was outwitted by Swansea's Gary Monk. He appears to like quick players but has selected some slow sides. Fellaini starting as a No.10 was the most baffling of selections. A No.10 is a creative playmaker who links up the attacking play between the midfield and strikers. Fellaini has never been a playmaker. He is too slow in the build up play and is passing is atrocious. Mata; who was Chelsea's Player Of The Year for 2 seasons in a row and is a natural No.10, was left unused in yesterday's defeat. And Van Gaal's experimentation with the tactics and team selection are not making things any easier. Valencia, Smalling and Young all put up good performances against Preston but surprisingly they were all dropped in yesterday's game.
--> LvG is a supposed apostle of passing football but the only philosophy evident in United's style of play is meaningless possession or rather keeping possession for possession's sake. Indeed, top teams across all European leagues play a possession based style of football. But the difference between a PSG/Barcelona/Bayern Munich is that their possession style football is accompanied with a high pressing and high tempo game with short, crisp passing that breaks down even the most stubborn and toughest of defences. On the contrary, United are dull, lethargic, slow and seem to be content with passing the ball backwards and sideways with our defenders and goalkeeper having more time on the ball than our forward attacking players.
--> Finally, I'd like to finish by saying that I am more of a realist than an optimist and judging from our performances thus far, I'm fearful that we are not going to make the Top 4. We have a tough run of fixtures coming up. From March 15 - April 26 (just 5 weeks), United will play 6 of the teams that finished in the Top 6 last season (Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Everton and Arsenal). Here is a more sobering STAT. In the past 5 consecutive seasons, the team that has finished 4th finished with 79, 73, 69, 68 and 70 points. We have 12 games remaining; a total of 36 points. We must get a minimum of 70 points total if we are to finish in the Top 4. That means from our 12 remaining games, we have to get at least 23 out of 36 points. (Damian Maina)
