Louis van Gaal keeps saying that Manchester United may get worse before they get better and he is proving as good as his word.
United were poor last season under David Moyes. Thus far this season they have been lamentable and on Saturday at Burnley they were even worse than their opening-day defeat against Swansea.
You can change the formation, go on a spending spree - Daley Blind is about to be added to the squad for £14million and £60m Angel Di Maria made his debut – but it makes no difference to the performances. The passing is awful, the tempo is slow and the finishing mediocre: all this from the likes of Juan Mata, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

As for the back three, they play like a dad dancing at the disco; they all stand in the right positions and do the right moves but they simply look desperately uncomfortable.
The economical mis-match had been well recorded beforehand – the £4.8m cost of the Burnley team against United's £200m, the fact that United spent more on Di Maria than Burnley have in their history. All pertinent points but the figures mean little if the individuals so highly valued cannot pass properly or link creatively.
Only to chastise United would be unfair however, for Burnley were excellent. No-one shirked their role, but the midfield of Scott Arfield, Dean Marney, David Jones, and Matt Taylor were enormously impressive. They exploited United's weakness to the full, might have grabbed a win and fully deserved a point.
If there was a degree of optimism about United it came in Di Maria. He faded eventually and went off on 70 minutes, but most of what United did well in attack was down to him. His first touch may have brought derision, as he mis-placed a pass for Rooney straight into the hands of Tom Heaton. But he injected pace, technique and quality into the midfield as well as that ability to advance the game twenty metres with a burst.
His passing isn't too bad either; his ball on 14 minutes to pick out Van Persie was exquisite. The Dutchman chested the ball down perfectly and shot with venom from close range. Really he should have scored but to say so sounds churlish given how well Heaton did to stay upright and hand the ball away.
His combination with Van Persie and cross for Mata on 15 minutes was also a delight, spoiled only by Mata slipping as he attempted to shoot. And some of his early combinations with Rooney were a glimpse of a better future.
