[h=1]Manchester United's Louis van Gaal pleads for ‘belief' after Burnley draw[/h] • ‘I can see progress, but United have to win,' says manager
• Burnley's Sean Dyche: ‘We are holding our own at this level'
• Match report: Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

Even as Daley Blind flew into Manchester to complete a medical for his proposed £14m transfer from Ajax, bookmakers were slashing their odds on Louis van Gaal still being in charge at Old Trafford by the end of the season following another winless afternoon at Burnley.
Manchester United's new manager admitted after his side's goalless draw that two points from a possible nine was not good enough and, though a member of Holland's World Cup squad should be a useful acquisition following the signings of Marcos Rojo and Ángel di María of Argentina, Van Gaal accepted his team looked anything but world class at the moment.
"We are certainly at not at that standard yet but we shall have to wait and keep believing it will happen," Van Gaal said after Burnley quite comfortably held United to a goalless draw.
"We will have to see where we are in a month or so. Di María did not look like the world-class player we have seen either, but you cannot expect that straightaway. He has to adapt to a new league, and the team needs time to adapt to his style of playing."
If Van Gaal was possibly being a little harsh there about what was quite a promising debut – Di María was arguably United's best player although once again the competition was less than fierce – he seemed over-generous in praising his side's defensive efforts.
"At least we are not giving many chances away," the manager claimed. "Maybe two in the first half and two in the second, that is all."
Perhaps that was intended as a joke, for Sean Dyche was on firmer ground in suggesting Burnley had done well to restrict their opponents to just one chance either side of the interval, en route to their first clean sheet in 30 Premier League games. "We didn't keep the ball as well as we would have liked, but I thought our shape was good and our workrate excellent," the Burnley manager said.
"We have our first point and that's quite pleasing as we go into the international break. We are only three games in and there is a long way to go, but we are holding our own at this level, we have shown we can compete."
Van Gaal is quite fond of a joke, even in the present strained circumstances. When it was put to him that Blind's arrival will leave him spoilt for choice at the back, with Rojo still waiting for clearance to start and Luke Shaw returning to fitness, he agreed enthusiastically.
"Yes," he said, "It is very smart of the manager, I think. Rojo's work permit is not going to be a problem either, because we do not have a game next weekend. When the fixtures resume and we face Queens Park Rangers, the permit will have arrived."
He does understand, however, that United supporters were expecting a better start than this. "Two points from nine is disappointing," he said. "I can see some progress, but Manchester United have to win."

Saying goodbye: Daley Blind will leave Ajax after six years at the club to join Louis van Gaal's United

United tweeted on Saturday morning: 'Manchester United has reached agreement with Ajax to sign Daley Blind, subject to a medical and personal terms. A further announcement will be made when the process is complete.'
United have been linked with the versatile Dutch international throughout the summer, and the deal comes just days after Ajax director of football Marc Overmars said Blind would not be sold on the cheap.
Blind, who can play at left back or as a defensive midfielder worked with Louis van Gaal at the World Cup, and has been keen to link up again with the United coach.

Louis van Gaal keeps saying that Manchester United may get worse before they get better and he is proving as good as his word.
United were poor last season under David Moyes. Thus far this season they have been lamentable and on Saturday at Burnley they were even worse than their opening-day defeat against Swansea.
You can change the formation, go on a spending spree - Daley Blind is about to be added to the squad for £14million and £60m Angel Di Maria made his debut – but it makes no difference to the performances. The passing is awful, the tempo is slow and the finishing mediocre: all this from the likes of Juan Mata, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

*Player ratings by Ian Ladyman at Turf Moor*

As for the back three, they play like a dad dancing at the disco; they all stand in the right positions and do the right moves but they simply look desperately uncomfortable.
The economical mis-match had been well recorded beforehand – the £4.8m cost of the Burnley team against United's £200m, the fact that United spent more on Di Maria than Burnley have in their history. All pertinent points but the figures mean little if the individuals so highly valued cannot pass properly or link creatively.
Only to chastise United would be unfair however, for Burnley were excellent. No-one shirked their role, but the midfield of Scott Arfield, Dean Marney, David Jones, and Matt Taylor were enormously impressive. They exploited United's weakness to the full, might have grabbed a win and fully deserved a point.
If there was a degree of optimism about United it came in Di Maria. He faded eventually and went off on 70 minutes, but most of what United did well in attack was down to him. His first touch may have brought derision, as he mis-placed a pass for Rooney straight into the hands of Tom Heaton. But he injected pace, technique and quality into the midfield as well as that ability to advance the game twenty metres with a burst.
His passing isn't too bad either; his ball on 14 minutes to pick out Van Persie was exquisite. The Dutchman chested the ball down perfectly and shot with venom from close range. Really he should have scored but to say so sounds churlish given how well Heaton did to stay upright and hand the ball away.
His combination with Van Persie and cross for Mata on 15 minutes was also a delight, spoiled only by Mata slipping as he attempted to shoot. And some of his early combinations with Rooney were a glimpse of a better future.
