Louis van Gaal admits two points from three games is not good enough for Manchester United and insists their problems lie in attack rather than defence.
United were held to a 0-0 draw at Barclays Premier League new boys Burnley to leave Van Gaal still searching for his first competitive win since taking change.
'I think we were the stronger team, certainly in the second half,' the Dutchman told BT Sport.
'In the first half we didn't play a passing game that we did in the second half much better. We have also created more chances, but then you have to score, we could have scored.'
Van Gaal has introduced a new system at Old Trafford, playing three centre-backs, and has been happy with how his players had adapted.

'We are not giving (away) a lot of chances, today in the first half maybe two and in the second half maybe two,' he said.
'In the games we played earlier, we didn't give a lot of chances away, but we have to create more chances and today we have created chances to score and that is where we have failed.
'The progress is there, but you have to win, a club like Manchester United have to win. When you have two points (out of) nine that is not good enough and that is disappointing.'
United had two penalty shouts turned down, but Van Gaal chose not to focus on them, instead saying: 'I think we had a lot of free-kicks against us and I am certain we had more ball possession so how is that possible?'

Up in the air: Phil Jones reacts on a frustrating day for his team at Burnley

The Old Trafford boss added that he is hopeful that the work permit issues which have held up the transfer of defender Marcos Rojo will be sorted in time to allow the Argentinian to play in the next match against QPR.
He also admitted that Daley Blind will be arriving for a medical tomorrow and they will sign another player.
Van Gaal added: 'He'll come to Manchester to have a medical, and then we might have a new player.'
Meanwhile, Burnley boss Sean Dyche was pleased to see his side get their first point on the board.
'I thought we were very productive first half, extremely productive against a very good side. Second half we started very brightly and as the game wore on they began to control it better and we just got on the back foot a little bit,' he said.
'Overall we are happy with a point, we can't be greedy, they're a very good side.
'I don't think there's a lack or organisation or energy to the team, it's that quality in the final third that wins you games and we were close again today.'

His Manchester United debut lasted 69 minutes but in that time Angel di Maria gave Red Devils supporters more than a glimpse of what is to come from their new No 7 in the future.
Di Maria has only trained twice with his new team-mates, since his £60million move from Real Madrid on Tuesday, yet in spells on Saturday afternoon at Turf Moor it seemed he had been at United longer as he linked up neatly with Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal deployed the 26-year-old in central midfield of his 3-5-2 formation and Di Maria showed his energetic qualities that helped Real win a Copa del Rey and Champions League double last term.

United's early season performances have been lethargic and the Argentina international added a much-needed injection of pace going forward.
In the opening stages at Burnley Di Maria's first involvement in the match saw a trademark dribble ended by an over-hit pass into the path of Rooney.
The skill involved, as he beat two men in the heart of Burnley's midfield, was warmly appreciated by the travelling United supporters who chanted 'Argentina! Argentina!' in honour of their new £60m acquisition.

Welcome to England: Di Maria (bottom) wins his first Premier League free-kick after 12 mins

Di Maria's influence into the match grew as United weathered the opening 10-minute storm from Sean Dyche's side who pressed and pressurised the visitor's shaky defence.
The midfielder's move to the Theatre of Dreams broke the British transfer record fee and United supporters got their first insight into why their club paid a premium price to acquire Di Maria's talents on 14 minutes.
Collecting the ball on the half-way line, Di Maria sprayed a beautiful 40-yard pass into the path of Van Persie who saw his shot saved by Tom Heaton.

Ping: Di Maria almosts assisted after 14 minutes when he played a delightful 40-yard pass to Robin van Persie

At Real last season, the Argentine created the most assists in Europe's top five leagues with 17, and the vision he showed to pick out Van Persie was evident in what was the move of the match.
That pass was one of 33 he attempted on his debut at Turf Moor, and the midfielder soon once again neatly linked up with Van Persie to create another opening for Van Gaal's side.

Sharing is caring: Di Maria attempted 33 passes during his 69 minute showing at Turf Moor

Surging down the left flank, he performed a one-two with Van Persie, flicking the ball to the Dutchman, before crossing to Juan Mata who slipped just as he was about to shoot from 10 yards out.
Playing nominally in the heart of United's midfield there were times however when Di Maria struggled to cope with his defensive duties.
Primarily brought in as an attack-minded player the former Real galactico lost half of his personal duels when challenging for the ball.

Blank canvas: Di Maria failed to register any tackles, clearances or blocks during the match vs Burnley

He failed to register any tackles, clearances or blocks and was at fault for man-of-the-match David Jones' blistering volley that David de Gea did well to tip over for a corner in the first-half.
Van Gaal didn't buy Di Maria for his defensive abilities though and the Dutchman must find a way to utilise his new signing's main assets in a different way - be it with a change of formation perhaps as his winless start in the United hotseat continues.
For Real and Argentina - Di Maria shone in a 4-3-3 formation drifting out to the left-hand side during matches from his central role and his most destructive work for United came in the second-half doing just that but in Van Gaal's 3-5-2 formation.

Marauder: Match Zone's heat map shows Di Maria did most of his work down the left-hand side for United

On 52 minutes he gave the Burnley defence a warning of his speed, providing Rooney an overlap before seeing his drive blocked by Kieran Trippier.
Six minutes later the 26-year-old showed his blistering pace out-muscling and out-sprinting Trippier down the left flank before his ricocheted cross found Rooney.
The newly-appointed England captain's mishit effort fell back to Van Persie who saw his deflected left-footed volley cleared off the line by Dean Marney.

Expensive taste: Di Maria's £60m to United broke a British record transfer fee

Shortly after that thrilling burst though, Di Maria's afternoon was ended when he was replaced by Anderson on 69 minutes.
Moments before that the Premier League's most expensive player went down with cramp much to the worry with everyone connected to the club.
Van Gaal later confirmed that his latest signing was taken off as a precaution after taking a kick to his calf.

Down and out? Di Maria (left) had to be substituted after 69 minutes after taking a kick to his calf

Overall Di Maria's performance was the only real positive for United as they struggled to break down Premier League new boys Burnley.
His industrious display mixed with his unquestionable quality will be a welcome addition to United as they look to rebuild from last season's disastrous campaign.
It's clear that United have problems elsewhere though and Van Gaal has until the transfer window closes on September 1 to address these problems.
If not, then the qualities of Di Maria may not get to be displayed at the Theatre of Dreams as often as United supporters will wish for.

BURNLEY
TOM HEATON - 7
A big day for the former United keeper and he will remember it. Good handling a super first half stop from Van Persie.
KIERAN TRIPPIER - 6.5
Didn't get forward as much as may have hoped but never looked out of place against United's attacking stars.
JASON SHACKELL - 8
A terrific performance from the Burnley captain. Led by example. Authoritative all afternoon.

Central defensive partnerships are very important and Duff played his part in this one.
BEN MEE - 6
Didn't always look comfortable in possession and was happy to take the easy option. Solid enough, though.
SCOTT ARFIELD - 6
Couldn't repeat his spectacular effort against Chelsea but showed the other side of his game here. Never stopped running.

MATTHEW TAYLOR - 6
His experience will be important this season but didn't have his best afternoon.
DANNY INGS - 5.5
Came out of the Championship with a big reputation but hasn't lived up to it yet. Looked one-paced here.

Struggle: Danny Ings once again failed to make an impact for Burnley and was hardly given a sniff

LUKAS JUTKIEWICZ - 6
The better of Burnley's two forwards, he may have done more with an early chance than shoot against De Gea's legs.
Subs: Barnes 6.5, Reid 6

DARREN FLETCHER - 6
Looks a real athlete again and did his job simply and efficiently here. Good to see him back at this level.
JUAN MATA - 5.5
He could be the long-term casualty of Di Maria's arrival if he doesn't raise his game. Fell over a good chance.

Looks a better wing-back than many thought he could be. Could have had a penalty in the first half.
ANGEL DI MARIA - 7
A really promising debut from the record signing. Lovely ball for Van Persie chance in first half.

Manchester United are yet to record a win this season (Source: Getty)

After drawing a blank in a stalemate against Burnley this afternoon, Manchester United have recorded their worst start to a league campaign in seven seasons and their third-worst start in the Premier League era.

With three games gone, Louis van Gaal's side have just two points to their name, with today's 0-0 draw at Turf Moor following a draw at Sunderland and an opening day loss to Swansea at Old Trafford. Only twice in their Premier League history have United had such a paltry total at this point in the season.

Even David Moyes did better than this. So should United fans be starting to worry?

The last time the Red Devils endured such a torrid first three games occurred in the 2007/2008 season. United drew at home to Reading, away to Portsmouth, and then lost at arch-rivals Manchester City, leaving them in 16th place. Yet most people don't remember those three games from that season. They're more likely to remember United lifting the Premier League and Champions League trophies nine months later the following May.

Similarly, the only time United have had a worse opening three games came in the Premier League's first season. United were 21st (there were 22 teams that year) at that early stage, with just one point to their name. Yet over the remaining 39 games Sir Alex Ferguson's men rose 20 places and won the league.

Before the Burnley game, van Gaal insisted that it was still possible for his side to finish the season as champions.

He said:

We can be champions still in England now, in my first year. Maybe you shall laugh, but also in my former clubs I have started like this.

But you have to survive as a trainer-coach, as a manager. You have to survive, because, nowadays, the fans are asking for results and this is the question: Can I receive enough time to do all the steps we have to do?

Maybe you (the media) can support Louis van Gaal. Do you believe in him? Yes? OK. What a fantastic end, a fantastic end.
He's not kidding. In his first three games in charge of Bayern Munich in 2009 van Gaal's side also picked up just two points. They finished the season with a league and cup double.

The quality and quantity of United's competition this season is as strong as ever, while there are genuine questions to be asked about the suitability of van Gaal's preferred 3-4-1-2 formation for United's squad. Yet as gloomy as the United faithful may be feeling as they watch Match of the Day tonight, history tells us that van Gaal isn't wrong.

It's been a disastrous start for United, but there could be a fantastic end yet.

[h=1]TACTICAL ANALYSIS: Burnley 0-0 Manchester United – Barclays Premier League[/h]August 30, 2014
Burnley-Post-Match-750x360.png
All eyes were on Angel Di María as he made his debut for Manchester United at Turf Moor, starting alongside Darren Fletcher in midfield. Tyler Blackett continued his run of games in the first team and Jonny Evans made his first start in the Premier League this season replacing Chris Smalling. The attacking triumvirate of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata was once again selected as van Gaal continued with his 3-5-2 system. By playing 3-5-2, a system that worked well for van Gaal's Dutch team at the World Cup, United have been devoid of pace in the final third. The same was evident today and it appeared to be far too easy to defend against. Burnley packed the central areas, leaving the space was out wide, but whenever the ball was played out to the wide areas, both Young and Valencia failed to deliver anything of any real quality. More often than not the wing-backs were isolated in those wider areas, and were often doubled up against. With an orthodox back four the full-back can provide an overlap for the winger and create a two v two situation, but the 3-5-2 leaves the wing-backs isolated in a two v one making it very difficult to create anything. This was compounded as none of the central players came out to provide any width so United could not create anything from the wider areas when Young and Valencia were doubled up on by two Burnley defenders.
The argument to change to a 4-3-3 is a compelling one, and it may well have made a difference against Burnley. The fact that such a change did not happen means there is little point debating the impact of it on this occasion, and instead we should address what was a far more worrying problem. The individual performances of the players in the current system. When Valencia did have the ball in crossing areas he failed to deliver, not making one successful cross all afternoon. Once more, just like against Sunderland, his passing was safe and secure without progressing the attack in a positive manner, meaning he contributed very little to United's attacking efforts. Antonio Valencia crossing vs Burnley (Credit: Squawka)

Antonio Valencia passing vs Burnley (Credit: Squawka)

As you can see, the passing was sideways or backwards and did not create anything for the attacking players. What this doesn't show is how the nature of these passes slowed the play down, and by coming back inside allowed Burnley to reorganise their defensive efforts in order to shut down United attacks. When he was in crossing positions he failed to deliver as well; not one successful cross, wasting attack after attack. It is not as if the system failed to create good attacking opportunities, it is more that the players in those positions wasted the opportunities through poor play and bad decision-making. United were poor today. There is no getting away from it and the arguments over whether it was the personnel or the system will continue for a long time after the poor run of results so far this season. However in Angel Di María, United have a quality footballer who showed in small glimpses this afternoon that he can make the system work when he is involved. It is important to remember he won't be at his best until he has fully adapted to the league and his new teammates, but he still made a positive impact from central midfield. He brought a change of pace, an impressive range of passing and speed on the ball to break through Burnley individually, rather than trying to find intricate passes through congested areas every single time.
There are plenty of statistics to show his positive contribution this afternoon. He took players on and he covered a lot of ground, but his passing was the most impressive thing that showed he can create something for the team. Most importantly when you compare it to the man he replaced in the side, Tom Cleverley, then you can see the difference in the amount of forward passes Di María made today. Angel Di Maria passing vs Burnley (Credit: Squawka)

Tom Cleverley passing vs Sunderland (Credit: Squawka)

He was unsuccessful in several of those passes, but the element of risk that comes with a forward pass is necessary to break down a team like Burnley, who played with two banks of four very close together, limiting the amount of space for the likes of Mata, Rooney and van Persie. The yellow pass on Di Maria's map indicates the pass for van Persie that created his excellent chance, and it is this kind of quality that United can now expect from midfield areas when Di María is in the team. His role within the system was positive, and his forward runs both on and off the ball gave United something a little bit different, but overall his inclusion highlighted everything that was missing throughout the rest of the team. United will improve, and with the return of a number of key players and further familiarity with the system van Gaal has proved that it can work. Pace was missing in abundance this afternoon, and the midfield seemed rather lightweight. The additions of Blind, Herrera, Shaw and Rojo, alongside the return of players like Carrick and Rafael will give the side a completely different edge and far more options. As van Gaal as told us before, it is time to believe in the philosophy.
