Louis van Gaal's Manchester United era got off to a flying start with a fine performance and 7-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy. Ander Herrera starred while all seven goals were scored by Englishmen -- but what else did we learn?
Five into 10 does not go
United's squad currently contains five players who play in the No.10 role: Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj, Marouane Fellaini and Shinji Kagawa. Van Gaal has declared the squad is overequipped in this area, saying: "We have four No. 10s, so the selection is not balanced in my eyes.
"I have decided to play this system because of the quality of the players. But if we lose, I can change back to another system."
With the new manager clear that he wants to give everyone a chance before reshuffling his pack, it would be a surprise if Fellaini and Kagawa both survived the summer. With two goals against the Galaxy, Rooney already has marked his territory as the main man in the pack.
Formation shift solves many issues
United lined up in a 3-5-2 formation, switching to 5-3-2 in attack that seemed fluid from the outset. The layout requires great energy from the full-backs (Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia at kickoff) but solves many problems United have had for a while. Namely, a strong presence in midfield.
The visitors dominated possession and restricted old foe Robbie Keane to one lively break towards the end of the first half. Phil Jones was the equal to Keane's sprint and seems assured as the central man in the three centre-backs. However, Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans all have history with the treatment table. United will need another defender or two if they are to persist with this formation.
Herrera quality
Since the retirement of Paul Scholes, United have lacked a schemer who plays at the front of the midfield. On the strength of this showing, Herrera is the next heir apparent. The new signing was central to United's best moves and was granted the full 90 minutes to state his case for the first team.
His passing was crisp and inventive and he displayed an intelligent energy those used to Tom Cleverley found refreshing. United fans will be pleased with what they saw. Clearly, though, the slick Spaniard cannot cure all United's ills on his own and a combative midfield anchor remains a necessity. One optimistic fan implored van Gaal to sign Arturo Vidal, displaying the message on a homemade flag of Chile, and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward says United can smash transfer records this summer.
For now, though, Herrera's start is promising -- his graft and guile making United's neglect of midfield in recent years all the more baffling.

Captaincy remains up in the air
The choice of Darren Fletcher as captain seemed a pragmatic one but the Scot has never had the commanding presence United's armband demands and is unlikely to get the job full time. Van Gaal is not one to shirk the big decisions and this may have been a play on politics from him.
It still seems likely that Robin van Persie will be given leadership duties when he returns and sharing responsibility in the meantime could be just playing to the gallery. Giving it to Rooney straight out would have been facile -- despite their warm embrace in training, Rooney and van Gaal are still figuring each other out.
Victories build momentum
Although the Galaxy are not the force of a couple of years ago, this was a full-strength side in the middle of their season and United swept them away. This time last year, United lost 1-0 to the Singha All-Star Eleven and the response was muted.
Several elements of this game gave it the feel of a friendly, not least the huge personnel overhaul at halftime, but United were 3-0 up by then and in cruise control.
In their coming games, United will take on European champions Real Madrid and could potentially meet Liverpool if results lead them to the extra fixture on offer. Victories against those sides would surely see them hit the ground running in the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney: Celebrates after scoring United's third against Roma

Manchester United's goal-laden pre-season tour of the United States continued as they recorded a 3-2 victory over Roma in their first game of the International Champions Cup.
Wayne Rooney scored twice before the interval in Denver, his second coming from the penalty spot, with Juan Mata on target in between with a deft finish from the England international's superb pass.
Substitute Miralem Pjanic pulled one back for Roma with an astonishing long-range goal from well inside his own half in the 76th minute, leaving second-half goalkeeper Ben Amos red-faced, before Francesco Totti's late penalty left United hanging on somewhat ahead of further meetings with Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

Juan Mata beats Lukasz Skorupski

Louis van Gaal's men had brushed aside LA Galaxy 7-0 earlier in the week and followed up that romp with a further three goals against the Serie A side, in a game where midfielder Tom Cleverley was handed the captain's armband.
There were some nervous moments for the Premier League club in the opening exchanges, with Roma striker Mattia Destro twice going close to opening the scoring.

Destro's first attempt came with just two minutes on the clock when he got in behind United's three-man defence and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, only to see it somehow bounce over the bar from barely two yards out off the firm Sports Authority Field surface.
And he will feel he should have done better soon after when the ball broke to him following Salih Ucan's run, but he could only side-foot over the crossbar from the edge of the area.
It took United some time to get into their stride in the heat and altitude, with Danny Welbeck charging down Lukasz Skorupski's attempted clearance before his attempted pull-back to Mata was cleared away.
A previously lacklustre game then exploded into life in the final nine minutes of the half, with Rooney breaking the deadlock with a stunning finish from outside the box which arced over the helpless Skorupski and into the top corner.
Rooney then turned provider, lifting a sublime pass from inside his own half into the feet of Mata, who controlled the ball with his first touch and then lifted a clever chip over the on-rushing keeper with his second.

Rooney scores the opener

And it was 3-0 before the interval as Welbeck was felled by Urby Emanuelson followed Ander Herrera's pass, with Rooney stepping up to send Skorupski the wrong way as he slammed the penalty home.
Van Gaal made a host of changes at the interval, with only Cleverley and young defender Tyler Blackett left on from the starting XI, while Roma counterpart Rudi Garcia also tinkered with his side as the familiar face of former Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole joined the fray.
Destro looked a threat again early in the second half as he dribbled his way into space in the United box before attempting an overly ambitious shot from a very tight angle which flew beyond Amos and into the side-netting.

Mata celebrates his goal

Will Keane saw his penalty appeals waved away and was ruled to have fouled Mehdi Benatia as they battled for the ball in the Roma box, before Alessandro Florenzi fired a first-time effort from inside the area wide of Amos' goal.
The flow of the game, which had been disrupted by the interval changes, was further affected by another raft of Roma substitutions midway through the second period, which included the introduction of the iconic Totti.
Cleverley, who did little to impress in his outing as captain, was replaced by Javier Hernandez soon after, with Chris Smalling the man to take over as United's skipper for the remainder of the game.
Pjanic scored the goal of the match with 14 minutes remaining as he received possession inside his own half, looked up to spot Amos off his line before launching an audacious attempt which flew over the frantically back-tracking keeper and under the crossbar.
Amos redeemed himself to an extent with six minutes remaining as he got his fingertips to an overhead kick from Leandro Castan from only eight yards out onto the inside of his post before the ball was cleared to safety.
Referee Alan Chapman pointed to the spot in the closing moments after Michael Keane was ruled to have handled in the box, allowing Totti to step up and beat Amos from 12 yards out.
