Very solid, and fed off the compose of his defensive partner. Stepped out too when required, demonstrated some good touches and showed his bravery with one diving header when being clattered by Silva.

Rightly earned several chants from the Kop for a non-stop, livewire performance that left Walker chasing shadows during the first half. After the break, it was more a case of digging in and coping with the introduced Sterling. Which he did easily.

Tasked with doing the dirty work and did it well, was constantly in the faces of City's midfield and didn't shirk chasing them down when in possession, which was often. A true skipper's knock, but his late booking – and subsequent suspension from next Tuesday's second leg – is a real blow.

His passing wasn't always been on point but his ability to read the play and continually nick the ball off the foot of a City player was crucial in the midfield melee. Indeed, one such touch prompted Oxlade-Chamberlain's strike.

Hadn't scored since his opener against City in January but knocked that strike into a cocked hat with a venomous 25-yard shot that Ederson still needs convincing went past him. The keeper just didn't see it. Moved to the centre and then the right after Salah's exit.
