‘You play 60 matches a season and you cannot play with the same players every time,' said the Blues boss. ‘In the first three weeks you have one match per week but after that the cups start, the Champions League, internationals, so you have to rotate players.

‘On the field we have a very good balance, even with the Under-21s. For example, (Andreas) Christensen isn't selected for Monday so he played for the Under-21s against Manchester City, they will have competition even when they are not selected by me.'
The departures of Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and David Luiz since the end of last season have taken some big personalities away. Mourinho is confident our new signings can drive the team on, but believes it's their abilities as players which will have the biggest, most positive, impact.
‘They are players with experience, a certain kind of character,' he said, ‘but what do I prefer, Fabregas's character or his quality as a player? His quality as a player.
What do I prefer in Diego Costa, his ambition in every game? No, his quality as a player. We went by the football profile but we could also have a personality profile which improves the team.'

Mourinho, who insists Chelsea are genuine title contenders this season, said: "Cesc is the kind of player that we didn't have.

Mourinho actually believes Chelsea are a better team in EVERY department after also bringing in strikers Diego Costa and Didier Drogba and defender Filipe Luis this summer.

"Didier is still a player with important qualities and he has a special feeling in the group to persuade people to work hard.
"We have an improvement in the goalkeeper group. We have in defence also because we've got Kurt Zouma and Filipe and that gives us balance.

"The club did a fantastic job to get the funds to attack these targets. The players that the club sold was unbelievable work and numbers that allowed us to buy players and make the team better and at the same time comply with Financial Fair Play."
