Chelsea and Arsenal had to deal with each other and testing conditions at Stamford Bridge, with snow steadily falling in the capital.
Fernando Torres, sporting a new haircut, was unable to find a way past Thomas Vermaelen early on, but the deadlock was soon broken.
There were just six minutes on the clock when Juan Mata was picked out in acres of space and fired Chelsea in front.
Ten minutes later, Ramires was sent tumbling inside the box by Wojciech Szczesny and Frank Lampard stepped up to the spot.
He made no mistake and wheeled away in celebration after doubling Chelsea's lead.

Jack Wilshere is not the type to back down from a challenge and he continued to get stuck into Ramires and Chelsea.
It was, however, proving to be a forgettable afternoon for Arsenal - including their frontman Olivier Giroud.
Hope for Arsenal arrived on 58 minutes, with Theo Walcott slotting a composed finish past Petr Cech to keep the game alive.
There was to be no way back for Francis Coquelin and Arsenal, though, as Eden Hazard and Chelsea claimed all three points.
