Antonio Conte's Carabao Cup press conference, 'Ampadu, Odoi, Sterling deserve a chance'

Rotation?

"I will continue in this way to give the chance to the players who show the chance to deserve this opportunity. Every competition is serious, but it's right in this competition to give an opportunity to players who are not playing with regularity.

"For example, Kante played 10 games in a row. When you do this you take a great risk for injuries, for a lot of things.''

Tournament progression

''We played against Everton & did this. We won the game & went through to the next round. I hope tomorrow as well, but Bournemouth is a really good team & we must be prepared to suffer."

Bournemouth

"Last game was a bad game, a bad defeat, when you lose 4-0 at home it is not simple [Liverpool beat Bournemouth]. For this reason, we must play great attention tomorrow as Bournemouth wants to take revenge and cause problems"

Kenedy

"Kenedy tried to give everything during training in five months. The behaviours and commitment was perfect. I think it is right to give him the opportunity to play this important game. I have to trust my players, not only with words but with facts.

"When he is not injured, for sure he stays with us, the first team everyday. Only in the part where he was injured, he was in the medical department."

China incident?

"This is the past, when we came back from China, Kenedy started training with us. I made a technical decision [to have him with us]."

Musonda

"He has a little muscular problem in his groin, not only for today but ahead of the game against Southampton, he is out. There's no other injury worries."

More youngsters tomorrow?

''[Callum Hudson] Odoi is playing well and [Dujon] Sterling could be involved tomorrow. They deserve a chance. Also [Ethan] Ampadu.''

Morata

"He had this problem with his back against West Ham, but now he's working very well & finding his best form."

Batshuayi

''He will start tomorrow.''

David Luiz speculation

"He's out, he's not available. It's a very old injury, he'll be out for maybe three more weeks.

''I don't read, I don't have information about this topic [transfer]."

Christmas time for the boss

"I will spend my time with my family, parents and brothers. This is a period that you have to enjoy with your family, I like to do this. Nothing special but just to stay together is the best gift for me."

Signing Hazard would refresh Chelsea attack

Make it three brothers at Chelsea

A different kind of Hazard

Eden is fundamentally a different player to Thorgan. The former loves dribbling at opponents and will do so time and time again – it’s why he averages 6.66 successful dribbles per 90 minutes this season. The latter, however looks to play a pass, produce a cross or take a shot on goal, all of which he is very adept at doing.

Thorgan’s game is more basic, but it is certainly effective. He is Gladbach’s joint top scorer in the Bundesliga this season and no player has more assists. Yes, he is the club’s penalty taker. But if a player accepts the pressure of taking a spot kick then it shouldn’t be counted as an asterisk against their goal tally.

Hazard’s ability to read the game in attacking scenarios is clear. He is intelligent and links up attacks in a very different way to the likes of Pedro and Willian, who are at their best when playing quick passes between defensive lines. His first touch is excellent and his finish is one of confidence. He has an injection of pace that allows him to escape defenders and find pockets of space in the penalty area.

The price?

Safe to say Hazard wouldn’t come cheap. For a 24-year-old with the talent the attacking midfielder has, Gladbach could rightly demand over £30m. Would Chelsea want to spend that money on a player who a year ago they could’ve secured for £13m? Perhaps not. But the Blues do have a history of re-signing players they’ve let leave in past in the form of Nemanja Matic and David Luiz.

Antonio Conte wants January reinforcements. His squad has looked thin in the last few weeks as the toll of competing the Carabao Cup, European football and the Premier League has taken effect. Signing Hazard would refresh the Blues attack.

Carragher warns Chelsea board, 'Don't sack Conte!'

Ex Liverpool player wouldn't be surprised if the Italian is sacked though

"I said at the start of the season before a ball was kicked that I'd be surprised if he was at Chelsea next season because he wasn't shy in letting it be known that he wasn't happy with the recruitment in the summer.

"They've had great success changing managers, but for me I think it would be a mistake if Conte wasn't in the hot seat next season. I think he's brilliant. I think this season, you can't compare what he's done to Manchester City, it's a bit of a freak.

"In a normal season, they'd probably be three or four points off the top like they are with United. The way he's dealt with the Costa situation, David Luiz this season, he takes no mess.

"He's a proper top manager, I'd love to still see him there, but I'd be surprised if he is next season."

Chelsea team news for Bournemouth Carabao Cup clash

Antonio Conte has already admitted that he is planning to give some of his fringe players a run-out against Bournemouth, which means that Michy Batshuayi is likely to start.

The Belgian has struggled to cement a spot in the first team having started just two Premier League games, but he has managed to score three goals in the EFL Cup so far in this campaign.

Marcos Alonso is ineligible to play on Wednesday evening due to suspension after picking up a fifth yellow card during Saturday's league match against Southampton, in which he scored the only goal.

David Zappacosta could be in line to replace the Spaniard at wing-back, while Danny Drinkwater and Pedro could also start, but Hazard and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois are likely to be rested.

Some summer signing win the game - others are yet to impress, ratings

Ethan Ampadu - 8

Composure, calmness and agression when needed from the young boy. We'll be hearing much more about him this week.

Kenedy - 7

Amazing backheel and a decent overall display from the Brazilian. Conte will have to scratch his head over Kenedy's involvement.

Willian - 7

A great gall and link-up play, Willian continues to impress and win fans over.

Alvaro Morata - 7

Scored the winner and showed, once again, the difference between him and Michy.

Danny Drinkwater - 5

It's been four months and we're still to find out why exactly Danny Drinkwater was bought. So far it's hard to guess why he'd be superior to any Chelsea high-profile loanee.

Davide Zappacosta - 5

Another signing with the meaning still to find. Cross went amiss, defending was no better.

Michy Batshuayi - 5

With each new game Michy just starts to frustrate fans. No goal and was of little help in other aspects of the game.

Antonio Conte's post-match reaction, 'Ampadu has to stay calm now, his time will come'

Result

"The most important thing was that we are in the semi-final, last season, if you remember we were eliminated against West Ham. We must be happy with the achievement to reach the semi-final. Especially because we reached the semi with a lot of rotations."

Cup progression

"We must be happy this is a remarkable achievement for us. Our target is to fight until the end for every competition."

Bristol City [they have beaten United 2-1]

"This is a big achievement, don't forget that last season Manchester United won this competition. It is not simple, to play in the league, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, UCL. You must pay attention in every game but these cups are good for these surprises"

Rotation

"I had a good response from my players, I hope to continue in this way, tonight many players had a chance to play from the start and I think I had good responses."

Players' condition

"I hoped this game would improve the physical condition of the players who have had injuries and have not been playing with regularity."

Morata

"I think it was important [impact] because I think to play 30 minutes more would be a bit dangerous. We had a great reaction, it is not simple after you concede in the last minute."

"This is a big loss for us [Morata misses next game with another yellow card] especially because we have to play a tough game against Everton."

Ampadu

"He was booked after 1 minute and 40 seconds. To book a player, who is only 17 years, he played the whole game with this problem. It is not simple to play with this."

"This player, despite his young age, is showing great maturity. I repeat, I don't like to make a gift for someone, if he deserves then I am ready to play very young players. In this case, he deserved to play."

"Now he has to stay calm. Maybe next game he goes to play with the youth, but this player is very humble & he could have a great future. He has to continue in this way."

Willian

"I am very happy for Willian, he scored his goal and played in great commitment. Same with Pedro, don't forget it is three games in a row and you pay something in a physical aspect.''

17-year-old or the wall

League Cup matters

The Chelsea public certainly turned out in force. The club policy of charging just £25 for adults and half that for kids paid off. Stamford Bridge was near enough full come kick-off time. Judging by the passion shown by Antonio Conte on the touchline, he is certainly taking it seriously despite his protestations about the fixture pile-up.

Danny Drinkwater debate

That is of course down to Gareth Southgate. The England manager was clearly sceptical about the injury excuse used by the midfielder for his no-show this season even though it was later proved to be valid. But Drinkwater is one of those “what you see is what you get” players. Never flashy, never spectacular.

The definitive workhouse but the kind every team needs. He leaves the fancy stuff to others. Dan Gosling caught him with a nasty late tackle. No writhing. No physio needed. Drinkwater just gets on with it.

Cesc Fabregas – still the midfield leader?

Absolutely. Fabregas has been born again under Conte. He has acknowledged that he is part of the squad not the mst important past of the squad. There is a maturity about his play now. And his vision in seeing the pass to play to Willian for the opener was classic Fabregas. He has a vital role to play for Chelsea this season. And in all probability, for a few more to come.

Ampadu the wall

The youngster may be 10 years behind his time with his agressive tackles - and old school fans will love it. The question is will the Premier League refs love it too? Anyway, this kind of display is all but marvellous from a 17-year-old.
