‘Diego is a good guy and with him it’s important to joke, and when it is the moment to work, he works. He is always happy and he wants to show this. When you have this type of player who keeps the atmosphere always with good positivity, it’s important.' - Antonio Conte on Diego costa

Columnist and Chelsea legend Pat Nevin’s mouth is already watering at our London derby that is bringing to a close the festive fixtures, with other significant games to quickly follow…

One thing is for sure, the Premier League chasing pack isn’t going to give up the chase lightly this season. Man United battling for their lives to the end against Boro showed that, and Spurs going into overdrive against Watford to keep up the pressure underlined it. Liverpool have lost just one of their last 18 Premier League matches and even managed to stave off the late Man City fightback, though the two dropped points against Sunderland yesterday were a surprise.

Even Arsenal before tonight’s match have bounced back after their customary mid-season mini slump, which this time was against Everton and Man City. The chat in the ether from many people would have you believe that the title is Chelsea’s to lose, a little subtle bit of pressure in underlining the negativity of the situation. This is nothing more than good, if slightly predictable, psychology I reckon.

Even Arsene Wenger has got in on the act by quoting that Chelsea are ‘super favourites to win the league’. This is probably even less subtle psychology from Arsene, in that he is also trying to instil the aforementioned pressure of failure from his base in north London while hoping for a bit of complacency from the Blues.

No one is foolish enough at Chelsea to fall for that, for all the chat of the possibility of ‘blowing a nine point lead’. First of all, it has been at the most six points at the end of any round of fixtures up until now, and secondly, if the Blues lost one game and it became three points, would that constitute ‘blowing it’? Not really, but it would make a good if rather lazy headline.

In fact, even though we are in the middle of three games in nine days, admittedly with more rest than any of the other top sides, I actually think the game coming up against Spurs should be considered the first of a new set of five really tough Premier League games that will have a huge outcome in the title race.

We face a resurgent Spurs away, Liverpool at Anfield, and an improving Leicester also away, and ‘welcoming’ Arsenal to the Bridge with only Hull at home giving some possible respite. It is another one of those runs when you think if we are still on top of the table after that, by however many points, then the real serious thought of winning the title can come to the fore, but not before then. This is when it counts and as such there are a few games in there when I will not be devastated if we come away with only a single point.

Against our closest rivals, a point is much better for us than them. Against Stoke the team managed to score four goals, but it was not the controlling performance that we had witnessed in many other games in this run. Mark Hughes’ side looked well-organised, hungry and even confident in that first half in particular. I reckon they came closer to managing our current 3-4-3 system than anyone else of late with the possible exception of Spurs for 45 minutes at the Bridge.

What did, however, strike me at the time is the Chelsea team and a number of players in particular had other gears in reserve to go through when Stoke twice got back into the game. When Martins Indi scored, we dominated for 10 minutes before getting back in front and when Peter Crouch equalised again, Eden turned on the afterburners like a fighter pilot on a test flight and within seconds, we were up the field and back in front.

Cesc was crucial with his closing down high up the field and his perfectly weighted pass to Willian was class as well. Few teams have the ability to change the pace of a game with such precision, Well few British teams anyway. It is very much the case that in English football you go at it hammer-and-tongs from first to last minute, and worry later about the niceties of controlling the game and its tempo. With the likes of Diego Costa and Hazard, there is an overdrive button and with Fabregas we probably have one of the best controllers of a game playing in football today.

I reckon we are going to need everyone at the absolute top of their games in the coming month or so, starting with Spurs tomorrow. They are looking a better outfit than they did last season and they chased Leicester almost the entire way then; well until the night they lost their chance of the title, their composure, their control and finally their heads at Stamford Bridge.

They do however have Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen all on top form, so this could be amongst the most compelling games of the season so far. While everyone got very excited about the Liverpool v Man City game last week, that definitely was a damp squib in the end, I cannot see this as being anything other than a full scale, 100 mph, fully committed and passionate 90 minutes. There has always been a special atmosphere when Chelsea meet Spurs.

The final game last season was extra mad, and if you add the spice of both sides seriously contending for the title this time it simply can’t fail to serve of something spicy. Also to consider is that just like the 2-2 game, it is an evening kick-off and that always adds to the atmosphere of the occasion. As the final little addition, Spurs cannot afford to lose this game and even a draw is a pretty awful result for them as they will remain 10 points behind Chelsea.

They have to go for it. With all the rest of the games already played, everyone’s attention will be at White Hart Lane and maybe the final thing to add is that with the volume of games in such close proximity, there will be some tired players out there too. That leads to mistakes and it often leads to more open games, especially in the second half. Others will of course complain, Arsenal in particular have two games between our win over Stoke and our match up with Spurs.

Maybe I will have only limited sympathy though. It may be two games in three days which is quite unusual in the modern era, but I can remember on a few occasions playing two games in two days. One in particular was a 5-4 win at Wembley against Man City after playing the day before. So you see, tired players often equal lots of goals and I would not complain about a 5-4 win at the Lane this time, though I bet our defence wouldn’t be quite as quick to accept that score line.
