When Antonio Conte made a substitution of seemingly little substance with Chelsea 3-0 down at Arsenal in late September, few would have predicted it was a fresh start for his team to build title ambitions on.

Marcos Alonso replaced Cesc Fabregas after 55 minutes at the Emirates and the Blues switched to three at the back. Little changed there but fast-forward six weeks and Chelsea are the Premier League’s form side and a point off the top spot.

It is a remarkable turnaround. Ronald Koeman said of Conte’s 3-4-3 after watching his Everton side get torn apart on Saturday: ’I’ve never seen a team so strong playing this system. This system is very difficult to play against.’
Nobody has found a way to stop them since the switch. Five games, 16 goals and none conceded. Add to that the transformative effects it has had on players who looked fragile and vulnerable and the new record looks all the more impressive.

Conte’s new-look Chelsea have steamrollered every opponent comfortably in the Premier League so far.

Here, we take a look at just how he has got it to work.

Goalkeeper and defence

Conte might have sold himself as a back-four man when arriving at Chelsea in the summer but it was no secret that much of his past success at Juventus and with Italy had come with a three-man backline.

The switch, which started in the second half at Arsenal, has seen David Luiz emerge as the leader between Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta.

The £32million summer signing provides confident distribution from the back and has shown none of the defensive frailties many worried would plague Chelsea in the Brazilian’s return this summer. He made Romelu Lukaku look powerless on Saturday.
Luiz’s contribution of pace and strength make him difficult to get around and the two men flanking him have both proved comfortable in covering wide and inside when required.

Azpilicueta, combining his experience from full-back roles on both sides of the pitch, has the perfect awareness to know when to go and when to stay on the right while Cahill’s return to form on the left side after 18 miserable months has been surprising and impressive in equal measure.

The England centre back seems to have more confidence in the added protection the revamped system offers and has comfortably adapted into the new requirements asked of him.
Thibaut Courtois has shown none of his early-season frailties either and is now two-clear on six in the Premier League clean sheets table.

John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic, at the minute, look like spare parts.


Midfield

With the wing backs being the key men in this set-up, Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses have emerged as the surprises to transform Chelsea’s fortunes. Both have been excellent.

Former Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland man Alonso looks right at home back in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old says playing in Serie A gave him a ‘defensive masterclass’ — add that to his comfort on the ball and Chelsea have an underrated talent on their hands.
The protection and width offered by the Spaniard allow Eden Hazard the freedom to drive forward and inside and having their star man closer to the opponents’ goal means more danger from Chelsea.

Moses, meanwhile, has emerged from a series of unremarkable loans to become a permanent first-team fixture at Stamford Bridge. His energy down the right — and guidance in defence from Azpilicueta — make him an impressive box-to-box wide man.

With so much going on out wide, the obvious place to get at Chelsea would appear to be through the centre of midfield — reduced to only two men from a previous three.
But Ngolo Kante’s engine provides the work of two players while Nemanja Matic is providing the sort of spider-esque performances that looked long beyond him in the last days of Jose Mourinho’s reign in London.

Kante could yet become the first player to be a key man in back-to-back Premier League title wins at two different clubs.

The chest-out, chin-up stride of long-legged Serbian star Matic appears to be back and he is now second in the Premier League assists table on five.

Cesc Fabregas and Oscar cannot offer the same tenacity as Matic and Kante — who were the Premier League’s top tacklers in the previous two seasons — in the central roles and therefore find themselves out of the picture.
Attack

Premier League top scorer Diego Costa has been in fine form all season but now finds himself with additional support and is rarely left isolated.

It allows the nine-goal frontman to pick his moments, unleashing his power when it can be at its most effective rather than aimless charges at a packed defence.

Hazard, as always, is Chelsea’s key. He has scored in their last four league games and set up Costa’s stunner away at Southampton, too.

With little requirement on the Belgian to track back and cover full backs forward runs, an action he has always looked well off the pace at anyway, the focus is on causing damage to the opponents’ defence and the swaggering, dropped shoulder runs of Chelsea’s most-recent title-winning season are back.
Aside from the stark improvements in the likes of Cahill, Matic and Moses, Hazard is enjoying the most-transformative effects of Conte’s switch-up.

The front three is completed by Pedro. The former Barcelona man has spent long periods in English football looking lost: plenty of energy but rarely targeted right and useless going backwards.

Now, he looks like the £21m man Chelsea thought they had signed last season. He found a way back into the team as Willian took time out on compassionate leave and has become a real force from the right-hand side.

The Spain international’s sweet touch and turn past Ashley Williams, as well as is assist for Hazard’s second on Saturday gave the impression of a player full of confidence and Pedro’s goal was much deserved for one of his finest Premier League performances.
