Report: Radamel Falcao meets with Chelsea

A bit of redemption could be in store for Radamel Falcao as he considers returning to England following his miserable first season with Manchester United.

Only this time, the Colombian international is setting his sights on a possible transfer to the Premier League champions, Chelsea, according to Amy Lewis of Sky Sports.

Falcao is reportedly speaking with several teams following his uninspired, season-long loan with United from AS Monaco.

His first year in England's top flight never appeared to suit Falcao as he struggled throughout the campaign and only managed four goals during his 29 appearances.

United rejected the option to buy the striker and announced Falcao's departure following the conclusion of the season.

If Falcao and Chelsea come to an agreement, the 29-year-old has the capability of being an effective replacement for Didier Drogba, who announced his departure from the league champions shortly before their season finale.

It's unknown if a transfer this summer would be a loan agreement or a permanent move, but Sky Sports reports that a transfer from the Ligue 1 team could cost up to £44 million.

Is Diego Costa ready to leave Chelsea after just one season?

Marca are reporting that Chelsea froward Diego Costa has "failed to settle" in London, and would like to return to his former club, Atletico Madrid. The paper is citing "the wet English climate, the language, and the food" as the reasons Costa isn't happy, and that the player would be willing to take a massive drop in salary in order to return to Spain.

This report will likely cause panic with much of the fanbase, as Chelsea looked like a far more dangerous squad last season after the arrival of Costa than they have for the past several year without a striker. Should the Brazilian-born Spaniard leave, Mourinho's side would find themselves in desperate need of a striker again, just a season after finally crossing that off of the list.

Frankly, I have a hard time taking this report too seriously, though, as I do with the bulk of the transfer "news" published in Marca. First and foremost, Costa seemed to enjoy both the fans and his teammates at Chelsea, who took to him immediately. Yes, the media did give him a bit of the Luis Suarez treatment, but Jose Mourinho does a nice job of shifting the focus from those sort of stories to either himself or back on the media, giving the players a level of insulation that they won't get at most other big clubs. On top of that, Costa is supposedly struggling with the language, and he probably isn't having dreck such as The Daily Star or The Metro translated every morning.

It rains quite a bit in London, that's a fact. Very few people actually prefer that sort of weather to sunshine and warm temperatures, so I'm ready to accept that Diego might actually have preferred spending time outdoors in Madrid. The food issue, however, is nothing short of ridiculous. London is one of the largest and most diverse cities on the planet, and someone with the resources of Diego Costa won't have any trouble eating the way he wants, especially with a club like Chelsea likely helping him find solutions. Narratives sell, however.

Thankfully, Marca notes that there's just no way Jose Mourinho and Chelsea part with Costa, which only makes sense given that he's such an important part of the squad, and that they just spent a large amount of money to bring him over from Madrid.

QPR's Charlie Austin is too good to be relegated; should Chelsea make a move?

Charlie Austin scored 15 goals from open play last season, adding 3 more to that from the penalty spot to finish as the fourth highest goalscorer in the Premier League. He directly contributed to 29 goals (18 goals, 11 assists) in QPR's joke of a campaign, which, considering that the team finished bottom of the league and scored only 42 goals in total, is actually quite impressive. Especially since not many expected the former non-league striker to be able to match his Championship production at the Premier League level, too. But he did, and he even got called up by England. Unfortunately for him, the rest of QPR is quite bad. Their level is the Championship. Austin's level is the Premier League.

Sure enough, there are suitors aplenty for his signature. QPR do need to shed some salary and while Austin only has a year left on his contract, he could still fetch a princely sum. I've seen £20m mentioned, even, which does seem a bit high. Newcastle, Southampton, Aston Villa, Spurs have all been regularly connected to him, but recently Chelsea have entered the conversation as well. In fact, we've become the bookies' favorite - and rather suddenly, too - which may not be a predictive indicator, but shows that there's at least plenty of interest in that bet.

Charlie Austin's not the only relegated striker to be a constant customer of the rumor mill - say hello, Falc... wait, I mean Danny Ings - but he's perhaps that one who could make the most immediate impact for his new employers. Trouble is, Chelsea only need a backup striker and £20m sure sounds like a horrendously steep price to pay for a backup, even if he's homegrown. And that's before we start considering someone like Patrick Bamford who put up similar numbers to Austin's Championship goal return.

Chelsea trio set to miss the start of the 2015/16 season

ilipe Luis, Willian, and Juan Cuadrado aren't with the Blues on their post-season tour, due to their participation in the Copa America. According to Jose Mourinho, that tournament will mean those three players won't be starting the seasonon time, as the Premier League kicks off earlier than usual this August:

'The players in the Copa America will obviously need a rest after that. So Willian, Cuadrado, and Filipe Luis will not start the season with us.'

The Blues aren't all that deep in the attacking band to begin with, so the absence of both Cuadrado and Willian will mean Chelsea start the season with one of Cesc Fabregas or Ramires in the attacking band, unless of course they add another option for Mourinho to select. The season (sort of) gets underway on August 2, when Chelsea take on Arsenal in the Community Shield, before the Premier League gets underway one week later.

Sydney FC 0-1 Chelsea: Blues finish season with entertaining win

After the sauna of Thailand, the cooler Sydney climate (and the 80,000+ in attendance) ensured a much more lively encounter.

Chelsea, just as Mourinho promised, started with the strongest lineup possible under the circumstances. Only Nathan Aké at left back and Jeremie Boga in the no.10 role weren't first-team regulars for the Champions of England. The trio of Hazard, Costa, Rémy led the line, supported by a strong base of Matic and Mikel and a center back pairing of Terry and Ivanovic. Cesar Azpilicueta started in his natural right back position, while Petr Cech started for perhaps the last time ever in a Chelsea shirt in goal.

FIRST HALF

Both teams started brightly and full of attacking intent, but it was Chelsea who controlled most of the proceedings as expected. Sydney looked to hit the visitors on the counter, down the flanks, especially behind the quite aggressive Nathan Ake, who did his level best to play as far forward as humanly possible. While he certainly contributed to the attack, his defensive responsibilities went largely unattended. Still, at least he was involved in the action unlike Jeremie Boga, who was mostly a spectator.

Just as the game threatened to settle down into more typical friendly, Loïc Rémy pulled out a world class finish from his socks and kicked off a 5-minute period of end-to-end madness. Petr Cech was called into action. Branislav Ivanovic cleared off the line. Jeremie Boga missed an easy one, though he finally seemed to wake up and even went on one his typical runs before the half-time whistle.

Diego Costa was withdrawn on 40 minutes (precautionary; slight knock on his Achilles) in favor of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but the striker was certainly one of the standout stars of the first half with endless running, verve, and desire to take on the hosts in sky blue. Other standouts included Mikel (playing the more advanced role in the double pivot with Matic), Cech, and of course Hazard. On the flipside, our full backs were both rather horrendous at defending, but hey, it's just an exhibition in the end.

SECOND HALF

Mourinho made a couple changes at the break, Dominic Solanke coming on to replace Jeremie Boga and Andreas Christensen taking the place of Aké (with Azpilicueta switching over to left back), as Chelsea (and especially Eden Hazard) picked up where they left off in the first half. As usual, even in a friendly, the only way to have any hope of stopping Hazard was via a foul.

While a goal didn't quite come together for the Blues - we were a bit overelaborate at times, too - there were a few fun moments, chief among them when Loftus-Cheek and Mikel were the two most advanced runners on a counter. Or when Rémy's shot after some great interplay with Hazard had to be cleared off the line. Or when Hazard's run created a glorious chance for Christensen to fluff. Or when Matic passed up an easy assist to Solanke and went for goal from a tough angle instead. Hazard was withdrawn with a couple minutes left in favor of Charlie Colkett.

Further youth were introduced before then in the forms of Jordan Houghton, arriving for Loftus-Cheek who seemed to tweak his lower back, and Charly Musonda, who replaced Solanke. Izzy Brown repalced the goalscorer Rémy. The game had very much petered out into a friendly by then.

There was time enough for one more tremendous save from Petr Cech - his last one ever in a Chelsea shirt? - a few late chances for Sydney (including a disallowed goal for handball), and then the final whistle blew and the season was well and truly over.

Costa happy at Chelsea, says Mourinho

SYDNEY, June 2 (Reuters) - Diego Costa is the happiest player in the Chelsea dressing room, manager Jose Mourinho said on Tuesday as he scoffed at reports the striker wanted to return to Spain after one season in London.

Spanish publication Marca reported on Tuesday that the Brazilian-born international, who joined Chelsea for 32 million pounds ($48.94 million) last year, had spoken to Atletico Madrid about returning to the club.

"He's the guy responsible for everything good we have in the dressing room. He's so happy, he's so funny, he's enjoying every minute," Mourinho said after the English champions beat Sydney FC 1-0 in the final match of their season.

"He's the happiest guy in the dressing room so if this is unhappiness, I'm happy with that.

"I think he was not happy with the news and I think in his bad English he has to try and address that he's not happy with the news."

Costa was named Man of the Match despite being substituted before the end of the first half of the friendly that attracted more than 83,000 fans to Sydney's Olympic stadium.

"Diego was trying, we didn't want to risk him (but) I told him 'let's give the fans at least half an hour of Diego Costa'," Mourinho added.

"He went until the 40th minute and at that time we all felt that was enough."

Mourinho paid tribute to all his senior players for the effort they put in out of "respect" for the fans, despite the long season they had endured.

The Portuguese was less impressed with the younger players who came on later in the match and almost let the hosts back into the game.

Mourinho was scathing of home-grown midfielder Reuben Loftus-Cheek who replaced Costa but was substituted himself half an hour later.

"He has to learn that at 19 you have to run three times as much as the other guys and you have to play in your limits and you don't have to play like a superstar with the ball at your feet because this is not the under-18s," Mourinho said.

"I don't accept that a player ... when we don't have the ball, doesn't press, he doesn't have intensity and he is waiting for other people to recover the ball.

"I don't accept that in superstars and I don't accept that in a 19-year-old kid. He has to learn what it takes to play for us."

Chelsea not looking to sell Diego Costa

No, Chelsea are not looking to sell Diego Costa. While it's plausible that Costa hasn't completely settled in England just yet - all sources mention his break-up with his girlfriend concurrent with (because of?) the move to London, and the fact that he still doesn't speak a lick of English, and his nagging injury issues - he has hardly shown any effects of any such issues on the pitch. If this is Costa playing unsettled, we're in for extreme greatness once he does settle.

The counter-narrative to Costa leaving goes something like this. Chelsea will protect Diego (from injuries, from himself) this summer by giving him a nice long vacation. No Spain duty, either. We are apparently still going ahead with the plan to not repair his hamstrings using surgical means, but rather manage it through a program of strengthening and fitness. Dom Fifield of The Guardian even goes as far as to bring up Chelsea giving Diego "pscyhological" support to ensure a full recovery from his fitness issues. Though I have yet to see any evidence of confidence issues on the pitch from our 20-goal man.

Odds slashed as Chelsea close in on La Liga star

he odds of Antoine Griezmann making a summer move to Chelsea are a lot shorter than they were yesterday. I mean that literally -- there've been some pretty strange movement in the betting markets and the Atlético Madrid star is now listed as 4/5(!) to move to Stamford Bridge this summer, huge buyout clause* or no.

Still, Chelsea being odds-on-favourites to sign the winger is interesting. At 24 and having clearly stepped up a level last year, he's the sort of player that would help the club.

Chelsea set to collect nearly £100 million in Premier League television revenue

f Chelsea want to be major players in the summer transfer market, they received a big boost on Tuesday when the Premier League released the breakdown of what clubs were making from the massive television deal. The Blues earned £98,999,554 from the central fund, the largest amount ever given out to a Premier League club

These figures have gotten significantly larger over the past three years, and have significantly closed the gap between what the top sides in England earn compared to Real Madrid and Barcelona. As this gap continues to shrink due to governmental regulation of La Liga's television money, it's not hard to imagine that the gap on the field will close significantly as well.

Now that we know Chelsea have made an awful lot of money, our focus can turn to how they'll be spending it. Here's hoping that doesn't involve overpaying for an aging forward that just spent the season failing to impress in Manchester.

I'm staying at Chelsea, says Costa

SYDNEY, June 2 (Reuters) - Striker Diego Costa dismissed media reports suggesting he was unhappy at Chelsea after helping the English champions to a 1-0 victory in a tour match against Sydney FC on Tuesday.

"I have no reason to leave this place. I love it, the fans love me and I want to stay," the Spanish international told Chelsea's in-house TV channel.

Earlier, Britain's Sun newspaper said the former Atletico Madrid player was homesick and was keen to go back to Spain.

The Brazilian-born Costa has spent just one campaign at Stamford Bridge but already he has won the Premier League, scoring 20 goals, and the Capital One Cup.

"It's really good to come in the first season and win two things," he said. "It's really important and next year I'll be ready to come back and hopefully win a couple more trophies."
