Mourinho confirms striker interest, opens up about summer plans

Now that the Champions League final has been played (congratulations, Barcelona), we can finally dive head first into silly season. It's fitting, then, that Jose Mourinho spoke about his summer plans in a fantastic interview with The Sunday Times:


'It will be difficult to find players to go straight into the team, because it's not easy to find a better striker than Diego, a better keeper than Courtois, a better midfielder than Matic or Fabregas. It's not easy to do what we did last season, where we bought two or three players and they went straight into the team.'

'This season is about improving the squad. This season is about improving the squad, bringing players to make us more consistent, so we don't go through difficult periods like last season when we had crucial injuries. We have to try and protect the situation by adding two or three players.'

'We will be better. I don't see our team losing players. We lost a striker who scored four goals in the Premier League, but three of these goals meant important points for us. So we have to buy a striker because we want to have three strikers of a good level.'

That sounds an awful lot like Mourinho hinting at more rotation next season, as long as he can add depth that he trusts. That's probably not a great sign for some of the bench parts that couldn't get a match this campaign. He also (according to The Times) confirmed interest in Radamel Falcao while giving these quotes.

Reading between the lines, it also sounds as if Mourinho is tempering expectations of a big summer window, in which we add multiple players such as Gareth Bale or Paul Pogba that would walk into the Chelsea XI, instead suggesting we'll see a very similar group to the one that lost just four times last season. He's certainly not ruling out a big move or two, but he's clearly happier with his squad at this point than he was a year ago.

Well, if Loïc Rémy is to leave Chelsea after just twelve short, but mostly successful months, it appears that he would have no shortage of options as far as choosing his next employer. He's been repeatedly linked with his old Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, now at Crystal Palace, and now, according to the The Daily Mirror, another new suitor has emerged as well.

So that's actually two new teams, though the rest of the Mirror's article has no mention of Southampton, making that an even more tenuous link than the Swans.

Incidentally, Rémy scored his first ever goal for Chelsea against Swansea City. Are Garry Monk and Co. running a similar transfer policy to Chelsea? Sign all the people who have scored against us?!

That being said, Swansea are definitely looking to sign a striker this summer after losing Wilfried Bony in January to Manchester City. Bafetimbi Gomis is their only viable center forward at the moment, and while he did finish the season better than he started it, he certainly could use a bit of competition. Could Rémy provide the perfect competition for the big man? They could certainly do worse...

Patrick Bamford now has a price tag, but are Chelsea looking to sell or ward off interest from the likes of Newcastle?

More Chelsea and Newcastle United rumblings! Must be that new manager smell (see also: Real Madrid and Benítez). While technically Steve McClaren has yet to take over up on Tyneside, the local papers are already full of rumors of new signings. (And the local papers' comment sections are full of comments befitting a frustrated and disillusioned fanbase.)

In any case, in addition to supposedly being interested in Marco van Ginkel, Newcastle are also intrigued by a certain Patrick Bamford, Chelsea loanee of much promise and perhaps even a semi-realistic expectation of making it at Chelsea proper at some point.


Chelsea have slapped a £10million price tag on Newcastle United strike target Patrick Bamford.

United have been eyeing the England under-21 forward as part of a summer overhaul, but Newcastle, along with Sunderland, West Brom and a clutch of other clubs who are interested in him, have been told it will cost an eight-figure fee to prise him from Stamford Bridge.

United are unlikely to pursue their interest at that price...

Now, I may be biased, but £10m sure sounds like a pittance in this day and age of record TV contracts for the 21-year-old Championship Player of the Year who has so far managed to prove his goalscoring credentials at every step and every turn. But apparently it is enough to ward off Newcastle's interest. So that's good. But I worry that may not be enough if others come calling.

Whatever the case may be, Bamford's future, if Chelsea still believe he may yet make the grade here, won't be decided until all the stories around Falcao, Benteke, Rémy (and others?) have run their course. Just like this time last season, Bamford's probably penciled-in as our third striker for next season, but the current situation might change as future transfers shake out.
