Ahead of the January transfer window Jose Mourinho declared publicly that he would prefer to finish the season with the group of players that he already had at his disposal, but the signs suggest that there could be late transfer drama at Stamford Bridge.

The biggest deal the Blues are set to conclude ahead of the transfer deadline is for Juan Cuadrado, who was in attendance for the 1-1 draw against Manchester City, as Chelsea agreed to meet his £27 million release fee. It is also expected that Mohamed Salah will go the over way to Fiorentina in a loan-to-buy option.

German international Andre Schurrle will be the most notable departure this winter. The World Cup winner has struggle to compete with the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian for playing time, and is to link-up with former Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne at Bundesliga club Wolfsburg in a £22 million switch.

But will Chelsea and Mourinho be finished there?

The Blues currently possess a first team that is capable of beating anyone in Europe on their day but the second-string have looked a long way from Mourinho’s preferred XI and if they’re to be successful on multiple fronts, as well as give themselves the best chance of winning the Premier League as possible, then the squad could do with bolstering.

In terms of priorities the defence is probably the area in which Chelsea ought to look at strengthening the most. There is a worrying lack of leadership when John Terry is absent, Gary Cahill looks increasingly shaky and Filipe Luis has not been convincing. But it is unlikely that any target of the required quality, like a Raphaël Varane, can be landed until the summer and Kurt Zouma looks capable of solving a few issues on his own already.

It’s far more likely that the club will continue to bolster their attack with Shakhtar Donetsk’s Douglas Costa still on the radar and the Brazilian is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge and link-up with his former team mate Willian. There has also been reports that the Blues may make a surprise move for West Ham’s Enner Valencia, who can play wide or at forward, and are willing to meet the £20 million asking price.

Everyone likes a new signing and Chelsea do need to expand their options as the manager has struggled to make an impact with his substitutions from the bench and it has proved difficult to rotate effectively, but no one wants to see the latest busted flush like Salah arrive only to end up out on his ear 12 months later.

Chelsea are set to continue their habit of making big profits on players after Andre Schurrle arrived at German side Wolfsburg ahead of a reported £49.7 million all-in move.

The World Cup winner has struggled to assert himself under Jose Mourinho, and has been increasingly linked with a return to the Bundesliga to make way for the incoming Juan Cuadrado.

According to German tabloid Bild, though, Wolfsburg must pay an upfront fee of £24.2 million for Schurrle, and will then fork out an additional £25.5 million in add-ons that include agent fees, bonuses and the winger's proposed £4.5 million-a-year wages.

The deal will see the Stamford Bridge club make a £6.2 million profit on Schurrle after initially signing him for a fee understood to be in the region of £18 million back in 2013, and are expected to use the spare wages to bring in Fiorentina's Cuadrado.
