T his is the most technically proficient
Chelsea side José Mourinho has created,
with the penetration and creativity of
the attacking players particularly notable.
Monday night’s victory over Stoke, however,
was an entirely different type of performance
and more comparable to Mourinho’s first
spell as Chelsea manager. For the
stereotypical cold night at Stoke this was a
solid, physically commanding team display of
the highest order.
There was a minor but crucial change in
Chelsea’s midfield. Mourinho decided to start
Mikel John Obi and Nemanja Matic together
in the league for the second time this season
having only previously been paired together
against Hull earlier this month.

With Fàbregas moving forward to the top of
the midfield triangle and Oscar dropping to
the bench, Mourinho’s side were extremely
powerful. Never mind Stoke giving the
league leaders a physical test, this was a
complete role reversal.
The match-ups across the pitch left no doubt
about Chelsea’s strength: Diego Costa against
Marc Muniesa, Branislav Ivanovic against
Marko Arnautovic and, in particular, Mikel
and Matic against Bojan Krkic.
The Spaniard constantly had to drop deep to
find space, meaning Stoke had no link
between midfield and attack, and when he
did receive the ball in advanced positions
Bojan often dribbled straight into Mikel and
Matic as if intimidated by their sheer
presence.
Fàbregas adjusted easily to the advanced
role. He positioned himself intelligently and
allowed Chelsea to bypass Steven Nzonzi and
Geoff Cameron regularly with one simple
pass, then looked up and stroked excellent
through-balls to Costa. He missed two fine
chances – Chelsea should have sealed this
game much earlier, and won by more than
two goals.

At both ends, Chelsea were commanding in a
physical sense. Thibaut Courtois coped
excellently with Stoke’s crosses and long
throws, especially in comparison to the way
Petr Cech struggled at the Britannia last
season, while Costa is clearly more of a
physical force than Fernando Torres and
enjoyed winding up Stoke’s two centre-backs.
For Stoke, this was a taste of their own
medicine, down to the fact Chelsea’s opener
was a header from a corner, scored by John
Terry.
Mourinho’s side slowed the tempo of the
game excellently and were rarely under
significant pressure. Chelsea’s decision-
making when they won possession showed a
great understanding of the situation,
attempting to break quickly through Fàbregas
when possible. If it was not, then they
retained the ball in deep positions, aware
that Stoke were standing off rather than
pressing high up. Possession was shared
evenly between the two sides but Chelsea
were in control, defending effectively with
and without the ball.

Chelsea’s only concern should be fatigue. The
front four looked less dynamic than usual
and Mourinho has rotated reluctantly this
season. This was the first of four testing
league matches in only 11 days and perennial
substitutes might need to make important
contributions. On the evidence of this
victory, however, Mourinho remains a master
of picking a starting XI to suit the occasion.

The good news for Jose Mourinho and Chelsea is
that they will wake up on December 25 three
points clear at the top of the Premier League
table and playing like champions.
For Mourinho, this is a very good omen. He has
been in pole position at Christmas on seven
occasions in his managerial career, and each
time he has won the title; twice at Porto,
Chelsea and Inter Milan, once at Real Madrid. It
is a stunning record.

Ni style ya Stoke City kutumia nguvu zaidi (physical). jana pia walikuwa na advantages kadhaa. walikuwa nyumbani, kulikuwa na upepo na baridi na pia it was a Monday night ambayo wao hawajawahi kufungwa (psychological advantage). ndio maana Maurinho alimwanzisha Courtois golini badala ya Czech ambaye last year alipata shida pale Britannica stadium. uwepo wa Mikel ulikuwa pia kuongeza physical presence ya chelsea kuanzia katikati ya uwanja kurudi nyuma. azpillicueta alicheza kwa vile kwa jana hatukuhitaji kushambulia sana kupitia wing defenders. hata Ivanovic alipanda mara chache sana. ilitegemewa kwa physical presence ya Stoke, Willian na Hazard wangekaa na mipira zaidi na kufanya penetration zaidi. bahati mbaya Willian hakuwa sana kwenye kiwango chake. Ndio maana Maurinho ameufurahia sana ushindi wa jana manake alicheza mchezo tofauti na ule uliozoeleka wa Chelsea. ilikuwa kuonesha kuwa hata physical game timu iko tayari.
