Chelsea were far from perfect, with Willian and Costa booked for diving and Gary Cahill lucky not to be sent off. The England defender had already been shown a yellow card for a late challenge in the first half - a tackle on Sone Aluko that Hull manager Steve Bruce thought was deserving a straight red card - and after the break the centre-back went to ground too easily inside the Hull box.

Hull's incensed players surrounded referee Chris Foy, arguing Cahill should have been shown a second yellow for diving, but the Chelsea player escaped punishment and less than 10 minutes later a frustrated Hull were reduced to 10 men.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given: "A few years ago, we'd say it was the foreigners bringing it into our game, but yesterday it was a 6ft 4ins English centre-half Gary Cahill. I've never come across a manager who told us to dive, but managers have said if you get hit in the box to go over. Is that a dive? I don't know. If a panel could get together after a game and debate whether certain incidents were a dive, red card etc, I think that would help stop it."
Sports writer Ollie Holt: "I'm fed up of it, I hate diving. Most managers condemn it when it's the other team and look past it when it's their team. Until that changes, the issue won't change. The media feels strongly about it and fans of clubs dislike their own players doing it. The will is there to stamp it out but there's been enough talk, we need to bring in retrospective punishment."
Ex-Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson: "We're in trouble when Gary Cahill is diving. He'll be embarrassed. It's a blight on our game. It needs managers to lose players to suspension and then it will stop."
