More about Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard could stand in the way of Chelsea's Premier League title pursuit

Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas at the heart of Chelsea's midfield make an argument for being the best central pairing in Europe. Sadly, though, even this talented twosome cannot heal the stab wounds bleeding every time Frank Lampard lines up for Manchester City.

For Chelsea, the first look at Lampard in Manchester City fatigues resulted in mixed emotions. He came on as a substitute to a salute from his former supporters and subsequently scored to deny Chelsea valuable points that will surely be remembered come the final month of the season. Still, that trip to the Twilight Zone was at the Etihad.

Since then, Lampard trolling Stamford Bridge dressed in the Citizens' shirt rather than Chelsea's blues has since become a real possibility.

For 13 years, no one epitomized Chelsea Football Club more than the goal-scoring midfielder who went box-to-box and set club records. With 211 total goals, Lampard scored more goals in a Chelsea shirt than any other man. One hundred forty-seven of those came in the first division and 26 hit their mark in the FA Cup. Both of those domestic tallies were club records, too.

When Chelsea separated with Lampard over the summer, he joined New York City FC and looked to be headed for a big payday in the United States. However, the club did not yet exist, and Lampard's deal included a loan to his new club's parent club, Manchester City, until Jan. 1, 2015.

Prior to opening his scoring account for Man City against Chelsea, Lampard's departure date seemed to be on schedule, as he'd done little to wonder otherwise. Since then, he has featured nine times, scored four goals and twice appeared in a Champions League match. Against Southampton on the weekend, Lampard came on as a substitute to score the second goal in a 3-0 win and help City move into second place in the Premier League, gaining two points on Chelsea.

In a title race that appears set to go down to Manchester City chasing Chelsea, seeing Lampard fighting for Man City until the end just seems out of place. The oddity levels increase when examining the inevitable reality of what comes next.

With Yaya Toure expected to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, which starts on January 17, one would expect that Lampard will hang around through the start of February. That means Lampard will likely stand at Stamford Bridge in direct opposition to Chelsea on January 31. It may even be his final Premier League match, which would fit better if he were allowed to switch into a Chelsea shirt.

Frankly, Lampard has been playing well enough to warrant picturing him starting at Stamford Bridge wearing City's crest. Even if the original loan was set to expire on New Year's Day, Lampard would likely have the ability to stay on until at least February, since the Major League Soccer season does not start until March.

If he scores at Stamford Bridge at the end of January, as he did at the Etihad in late September, not one soul would bat an eye. He is Chelsea's record goal scorer, after all.

Obviously, Lampard could follow through with his initial contract and walk away on January 1. To this point, however, he appears set to help Manchester City in its quest to hold onto the Premier League trophy. His actions may not put smiles on faces in West London, but the player has the right to make that decision if the club extends him the option. Also, Chelsea never made him an offer to stay, so it's difficult to blame Lampard for chasing another domestic title.

More about our strikers, Remy and Drogba

Chelsea's fringe players may prove difference, says Remy

The strength of Chelsea's fringe players will determine whether the club win the Premier League this season, according to reserve striker Loic Remy.

The French international scored the last goal in Wednesday's 3-0 victory over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur after being brought on by manager Jose Mourinho as a second-half substitute.

Remy and Didier Drogba, who was also on target for the runaway leaders, both showed they were worthy replacements for suspended leading scorer Diego Costa.

"We know the quality of Diego," Remy told the club website (Home) on Thursday. "He is a really good striker and Didier and me showed we can be without Diego.

"But we need everybody. The squad being strong makes the difference between us and other teams."

The former Queens Park Rangers striker described the 36-year-old Drogba, who hit 157 goals in his first spell at Stamford Bridge and is back this season for a second stint, as "a legend".

"Everybody knows him here and the way he is playing at the minute is very good," said Remy.

"He helps the team, he is not selfish and he scores some goals. He is amazing so I have to take my example from him."

Remy has scored three times in nine appearances, six coming from the bench, since joining from west London rivals QPR at the start of the season.

"I just feel really proud to be on the bench but of course I want to play, that is why I work hard during training sessions," he said.

"We have three good strikers and the others show me a good example, they are very professional, and for me it is a real pleasure to play with this kind of player.

"I try to increase my level and improve and it is really good to work with them and every time the manager wants to use me I try to do my best," said Remy.

"There are a lot of games coming so I am not worried about staying on the bench. We are in all the competitions so we need everybody and for me it is important to be ready when the opportunity arises."

Costa will be free from suspension when Chelsea, who are six points clear of second-placed Manchester City, travel to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Mourinho on his failure to win a game at Newcastle: "Let's try tomorrow. It is difficult and a difficult stadium to play in. There are some stadiums where when they see Chelsea shirts they have the game of their lives and when they play against other teams they look like they are playing friendlies."

Ni mechi ya kwanza kesho na inaanza saa 1545Hrs au kumi kasorobo mchana kwa saa za Bongo. Naamini lkn mwiko utavunjwa na tutatoka na goli zetu 3 safi bila ya kuruhusu goli

Chelsea-Newcastle United Preview

Premier League leaders Chelsea cannot afford to slip up at Newcastle United on Saturday with a chasing pack of title rivals all finding their best form in recent matches.

Chelsea (11-3-0) have been the standout team in England's top flight this season and remain unbeaten with a six-point lead at the top of the table, but with defending champions Manchester City, a resurgent Manchester United and improving Arsenal all hitting their stride, the Blues need to carry on winning.

Jose Mourinho's side were held to a frustrating goalless draw at Sunderland last weekend but quickly bounced back with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Diego Costa missed the Spurs match due to suspension, and it was left to veteran forward and crowd favourite Didier Drogba to step up to the mark. The 36-year-old Drogba scored one goal and assisted on another as Chelsea beat their north London neighbours.

Eden Hazard and Loic Remy also tallied for the Blues.

Chelsea's defence recorded their fourth successive clean sheet in the victory against the Lilywhites.

"It was not easy because they (Tottenham) dominated the early part of the match," Drogba told his club's official website. "We then showed our efficiency better than in the previous match against Sunderland.

"It's a derby, important to win and to continue with three points because other title rivals, like Man City, Man United and Arsenal, won as well."

Top-scorer Costa (11 goals) returns to the Chelsea squad, but holding midfielder Nemanja Matic is banned after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season in the match against Spurs. John Obi Mikel is favourite to replace Matic as Ramires is still out injured.

Honours were even last term, with Chelsea winning 3-0 at home courtesy of a Hazard hat trick and Newcastle claiming a 2-0 victory on Tyneside with goals from Yoan Gouffran and Remy, who will make his first return to St James' Park since moving onto Stamford Bridge.

CHELSEA Vs NEWCASTLE UTD
(Saturday 06th Dec '14 - 15:45 EAT)

After five home matches without a win against Chelsea, Newcastle United have won the last two Barclays Premier League encounters with the Blues at St James Park.

Chelsea have never won at St James' Park in three league visits under Jose Mourinho (D2 L2).

Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 23 matches in all competitions. They have never before gone 24 competitive fixtures in a row without defeat.

If Chelsea avoid defeat in this match they will only be the fourth team to go unbeaten in their opening 15+ fixtures in a Barclays Premier League season (after Arsenal twice, Manchester United and Man City).

The Magpies are the only team yet to score in the opening 30 minutes of their top flight this season. Their earliest goal this season has come in the 37th minute.

Jose Mourinho could reach the 400-point landmark as a BPL manager in this match (currently 398 ).

The Chelsea midfield duo of Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic, who is suspended for the trip to Newcastle, have run further than anyone else in the competition (Fabregas – 164.1km, Matic – 162.9km).

Kenny Dalglish column: Looking for a weakness in Chelsea? You are clutching at straws

A wealth of options up front, dangerous at set-pieces, wonderful skill and a strong work ethic - they will take some stopping in this title race

Chelsea are running away with the Premier League at the moment and the truth is that there is no easy way to stop them.

I hear people saying that Newcastle will go negative against them at St James' Park on Saturday in a bid to frustrate them.

Well, good luck with that because the problem with trying to stop all great sides is that the threat comes from so many different areas.

It's the same with Chelsea. Look at what happened against Spurs at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Diego Costa couldn't play, but his replacement, Didier Drogba, scored the second goal.

And when they took Drogba off, his replacement, Loic Remy, scored the third goal

So a team everybody said was desperately short of strikers last season now has a wealth of options up front.

But it's not just them. The threats come from all over the pitch.

Jose Mourinho's men are dangerous at set-plays, too. Their delivery is excellent and they've got the aerial threat of John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic.

Best wishes on going negative on Eden Hazard at the moment, too. He's scoring or creating goals in practically every game. Hazard has got a terrific work ethic, too. If Chelsea lose the ball, he's working as hard as anyone to get it back.

I see players in other teams who have got wonderful skills but don't work hard enough. That doesn't get you in the first XI at Chelsea.

It's got to the point where a 0-0 draw at a difficult away ground like the Stadium of Light is hailed as a setback for them.

That feels a bit like everyone clutching at straws.

Mourinho is getting plenty of credit for the way Chelsea are dominating at the moment and he deserves it.

Nemanja Matic has been particularly important to the side this season and it was Mourinho's strength of character that brought him back to Stamford Bridge.

He was allowed to leave the club once, but Mourinho recognised he had matured into exactly the type of player he needed and he wasn't too proud to re-sign him.

Matic provides Chelsea with great balance, cover for the back four and clever positional play.

He is one of those players who has the gift of knowing what he is going to do with the ball before he has even received it.

I still think the top four will come from the five teams – Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool – everybody was predicting would be in the shake-up before the start of the season.

But it is going to take something drastic to stop Chelsea lifting the title.
