Hong Kong investors eye cashew nuts processing, drugs
A VISITING delegation of investors from Hong Kong has shown interest in investing in pharmaceuticals, tourism and agro-processing, especially in value addition of cashew nuts.
The Minister for Investments, Angella Kairuki said yesterday that the potential investors are likely to establish a cashew nut processing factory in the southern regions and engage in the purchase and export of sesame.
“Tanzania is seeking to establish close business and investment ties with Hong Kong. The visiting business delegation has also held talks with officials of the Medical Stores Department (MSD) and the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) on the construction of a pharmaceuticals industry,” said Kairuki.
She said that MNH has already allocated 150 acres of land for construction of the factory which will be producing adult and baby diapers, hospital mattresses and napkins.
She said since inaugurating the office of Honorary Consul of the United Republic of Tanzania in Hong Kong, with Dr Annie Wu, the number of tourists from Hong Kong to Tanzania has increased threefold.
Tanzania Investment Center (TIC) Executive Director Geoffrey Mwambe said Tanzania seeks to enhance its business and investment relations with Hong Kong.
He said talks are going on between TIC and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) where upon completion, they will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further facilitate business and investment between Tanzania and Hong Kong.
She said that opening of the Tanzania Honorary Consulate in Hong Kong has facilitated direct communication and improved coordination of tourism and business activities.
“We are determined to attract investment from China and Hong Kong as a special administrative region,” he said.
The head of delegation, Jessica So said the visiting team were excited with the numerous investment opportunities available in the country.
“Tanzania has a number of investment opportunities in various sectors. We have decided to establish projects in the agro-processing, pharmaceuticals and tourism sectors,” she said, citing cashew nut processing factories as an area of great interest.
