The Cape Town Air Access (CTAA) team has confirmed two additional direct flights to Nairobi, operated by Kenya Airways, will launch on the 20th of November.
The additional two flights will result in five non-stop flights a week operated on a Boeing 737-800 - the three direct flights between Cape Town and Nairobi were introduced in June this year.

Added to this, the airline also operates indirect flights via Livingstone four times a week, and Victoria Falls, 3 times a week.

Amongst Africa Air markets, Kenya ranks the 4th largest source market to the Western Cape, with statistics revealing significant double digit growth of 29.5% of visitors to the destination in 2017, when compared to 2016.

Since its inception in 2015, the CTAA team has assisted in the establishment of 13 new routes and expansion of 18 exiting routes. During this period, more than 750 000 inbound seats were added to its international network.

“In just three years the CTAA team has assisted four new African carriers commence operation to Cape Town, creating air access to eight new African destinations," says Wesgro CEO, Tim Harris.

Cape Town Air Access is a partnership between the Western Cape Government, the City of Cape Town, Cape Town Tourism, South African Tourism, Airports Company South Africa and Wesgro.

"This is an exceptional achievement in a short period of time. We are pleased to see the demand of visitors result in route expansion between the two destinations, making it easier for us to trade, invest and travel to our key neighbours on the African continent,” says Harris.

The announcement of the route expansion comes as the team prepares to depart for the World Routes Conference in Guangzhou China, taking place from 15 to 18 September.

Scheduled to host 30 meetings with 25 airlines, the team led by Air Access Project Manager, Paul van den Brink, will look to facilitate new direct routes and expand on existing flight frequency.

Ethiopian Airlines is to increase its scheduled air services to Mombasa, Kenya, following an agreement reached between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.

The agreement will now see Ethiopian Airlines fly to Mombasa twice daily as Ethiopia and Kenya seek to deepen trade ties.

“The Kenyan side agreed to grant Ethiopian Airlines a second frequency flight to Mombasa,” said a joint communique from State House after Kenyatta met Dr Ali in Nairobi.

The additional slot to the airline is also said to be a boost to the coastal tourism which has been heavily dependent on charter flights from Europe. Currently, only two regional airlines — Ethiopian Airlines and RwandAir — operate scheduled flights to Mombasa from Addis Ababa and Kigali respectively.

Currently Ethiopian Airlines plans to more than double its fleet to 120 and become Africa’s biggest airline by 2025, but it already has 100 planes flying to dozens of destinations from Asia to South America, including four US cities.

Kenya Airways plans its first direct flight to the US in October. Hoteliers at the Coast have been lobbying for more international direct flights to Mombasa to ease air transport through Moi International Airport and attract more tourists.

Currently, tourists coming to Kenya using other global carriers must first land at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport before connecting to Mombasa.

IN SUMMARY

    • The Ethiopian operator was granted an additional frequency by the Kenyan government last month.

    • The agreement between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali means that the Ethiopian carrier will fly frequently on the busy Addis Ababa-Mombasa route.

Kenya signed the open sky agreement to improve connectivity across the continent and make it more affordable, which has seen the national carrier face tougher competition on its backbone African routes.

Middle East carrier Qatar Airways has indicated plans to fly directly from Doha to Mombasa, piling pressure for KQ, as the national carrier is commonly referred to by its international code.

Unlike these carriers, KQ drops passengers at its Nairobi hub before proceeding to Mombasa.

The Transport ministry in July 2016 also granted low-cost carrier flydubai the rights to begin daily flights between Dubai and Mombasa.

The agreement between Kenya and Addis Ababa is also expected to facilitate the expansion of KQ into the Ethiopian market.

Ethiopian Airlines currently takes 80 per cent of its local market with the remaining 20 per cent shared out to all other airlines operating in the market.

As the local aviation market expands, KQ has called for reciprocal policies in other countries to also boost its business.

“If we allow one airline to fly here four times a day, we should be allowed to fly there four times a day,” said KQ chairman Michael Joseph in an earlier media interview.
