Lamu Old Town does not allow motorized vehicles, including cars, due to its narrow, winding streets and to preserve its unique cultural heritage, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ban on vehicles, implemented in 2015, aims to maintain the town's traditional character and protect it from the negative impacts of modernization, such as noise and air pollution, and potential loss of historical features.
