The project is co-financed by the African Development Bank (AFDB) which will handle 84.4 percent of the project while the government of Kenya will cater for the rest of the project.
As of September 2019, the construction of the project was expected to take 30 months and was expected to improve connectivity between Kenya and the World thereby facilitating high-value exports and imports.
"The expansion of JKIA is an important infrastructure improvement for long term economic development in Kenya.
"As such, the accruing impact of the proposed airfield expansion project at JKIA is expected to apply across the national economy, allowing the region to more fully exploit its potential," read part of the report.
The project entailed the construction of a parallel, 2.35km apart, 4.9 km long runway and connecting taxiways, firefighting unit and trucks and construction of a berm planted with trees to reduce noise impact.
The project was part of the state's rehabilitation of the country's aviation in an effort to make the country an economic hub in the region.
Other projects targeted under the aviation umbrella included the improvement of terminal and airside capacity at Kisumu International Airport, improvement of safety and support operations at Moi International Airport.
The facelift was aimed at holding a capacity of 45 million passengers per year when completed.
The state had rehabilitated and expanded JKIA's the domestic travels area in readiness for the business boom anticipated during the December holiday.
Terminal 1B, C, and D at the international airport were rehabilitated in the process.
