Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he is unlikely to make any signings before the close of the transfer window.
The Gunners missed out to
Manchester United for the signature of Fulham defender
Chris Smalling with the England Under 21 international poised to move to Old Trafford in the summer.
Wenger has been strongly linked with a move for a new forward after losing
Robin van Persie to long-term injury, but the Frenchman has played down the prospect of any new faces arriving in North London before the transfer window shuts on Monday.
Wenger admitted he was disappointed to miss out on Smalling after claiming they were close to landing the highly-rated stopper.
"Manchester United got Smalling in the end. I am sorry because we were very close to getting him and we were on the case very early," said Wenger.
"I wish the player well.
"At the end of the day it is important he has a good career.
"In both clubs he has a good chance to make a great career. The most important thing is he does that."
Asked about any other transfer deals, Wenger noted: "It is not impossible (to sign a player before window shuts), but at the moment it is unlikely
