Guests told how the troubled singer, 48, appeared “dishevelled” in mismatched clothes and with her hair dripping wet during a two-day booze and pills bender.
The star’s lifeless body was later found slumped beneath the water in the bath of her Hollywood hotel suite.
Whitney’s daughter Bobbi Kristina, 18 – her only child – collapsed with shock and was rushed to hospital, where she was treated for stress and anxiety.
She had been in the lobby of the hotel when she heard the news and began sobbing uncontrollably, screaming at police and demanding to see her mother’s body.

The tragedy was discovered by Whitney’s hairdresser on Saturday afternoon. The singer’s bodyguard fought to revive her with CPR as paramedics raced to the scene, but it was too late. Whitney was pronounced dead at 3.55pm.

Despite the singer’s well-publicised battle against crack cocaine addiction, no illegal drugs were discovered.
But sources described “a plethora of sedatives”, including Lorazepam, Valium, Xanax, and sleeping medications.
Witnesses told how Whitney had been drinking heavily on the Thursday and Friday and regularly cut a shambolic figure in and around the hotel lobby.
A number of guests said she been seen acting erratically in the 48 hours before her death. One said she had been wandering around aimlessly and “skipping like a child”.
Staff say they had also received reports of her doing handstands by the side of the hotel’s swimming pool.
On Thursday evening Whitney appeared at Tru nightclub, on Hollywood’s North Argyle Avenue for fellow R&B singer Kelly Price’s pre-Grammy awards party.

The night before she died she was seen knocking back drinks in the hotel bar with members of her entourage.
Then, on the night of her death, with the pre-Grammys party just a few hours away, Whitney returned to her room for her final preparations.
The superstar had been telling her family and entourage how much she was looking forward to the bash hosted by her mentor Clive Davis.
Shortly before 2pm on Saturday, she opened her suite on the fourth-floor of LA’s Beverly Hilton Hotel, which would also later host the annual bash.

She is known to have used a phone in the palatial marble bathroom to call her gospel singer mother Cissy at her New Jersey home at 3.15pm.
Her entourage had taken over most of the hotel’s fourth floor and her hairdresser, stylist and two bodyguards were waiting for the star in her suite.
But at 3.42pm her concerned hairdresser went in to check on her – and let out a piercing scream.
A bodyguard ran in to the bathroom and saw Whitney’s face submerged under the water.
A family source said her legs were up out of the water – as though she had slid down the back of the bath.
Her bodyguard hauled the singer’s body out of the bath while another, known only as Ray, alerted security.

Firefighters – already at the hotel helping to prepare for the party below – rushed up to the fourth floor and began CPR in a futile attempt to revive the I Will Always Love You singer.
Sources described the scene as “horrific”, with friends and relatives screaming. Minutes later paramedics arrived and continued to perform CPR. But it was apparent no more could be done and she was declared dead at 3.55pm.
As friends and relatives broke down uncontrollably, Whitney’s daughter Bobbi Kristina, 18, tried to enter the room.
Police officers stationed outside the suite stopped her going inside and Bobbi reacted angrily.
A source said: “There was a furious screaming argument going on. Bobbi was distraught and just wanted to see her mother.”
Bobbi and legendary singer Dionne Warwick – Whitney’s cousin – were eventually allowed into the room only to break down in tears.
Detectives followed standard procedure and asked everyone to leave the room, sealing it off as a “crime scene”. They then applied for a formal search warrant from LA city officials.

Despite the six-time Grammy winner’s well-publicised battle with crack cocaine, sources said no illegal drugs were in the suite.

As the search continued, guests were arriving for the party downstairs – which, incredibly, went ahead.
LA County Coroner’s officials and Beverly Hilton bosses eventually agreed to take the body out of a back exit to avoid the media scrum.
Shortly before 2am, paramedics wheeled a stretcher out of the hotel and into a coroner’s white Ford van.
Just yards away, stars including Britney Spears, Tony Bennett, Sir Richard Branson and Kim Kardashian were still at the pre-Grammy party.
A postmortem will be held in the next 48 hours but it could be eight weeks before toxicology tests are completed.



Sources said the star, who sold 170 million records, went on “out of control” binges on the two nights leading up to her tragic death.
On Thursday evening she appeared at a party for R&B singer Kelly Price at Tru nightclub in Hollywood.
She was billed as one of the evening’s specially invited guests – and performed a rendition of Jesus Loves Me on stage as her on-off boyfriend Ray J, 31, and daughter Bobbi looked on.
Fans cheered as they filmed on their mobile phones what was to be her last performance.
However, other onlookers were “shocked” at her erratic behaviour and odd appearance. During the tequila-fulled night, Whitney also had a run-in with former X Factor contestant Stacy Francis.
According to reports, Whitney was furious to discover Ray J chatting to Stacy.

“Houston then pushed Stacy in her forehead and Francis shoved her back, before others waded in and separated them. People were pleading for Whitney to chill out. It was really embarrassing.”
Witnesses said that by the end of the evening Whitney was “wasted” and “moody” as she left the club with blood dripping down her leg and scratches on her wrist.
A source said: “She reacted angrily to the security guards trying to get her into her car ... and started cussing them and her fans. It was shocking to see. But it was also sad because her fans noticed that she was really shaky as she left the venue. She was not in control of herself at all.”
But singer Kenny Lattimore, who hosted the event, dismissed claims that Whitney was out of control.
He said: “She just seemed like she was having a great night that night.” Whitney was also said to be in “fine form” on Friday as she took part in a sound-check at the Beverly Hilton.
A source said: “She was present and ready. She had water to keep her vocals clear, and was trying to not smoke.”

Witnesses said she “partied heavily”, oblivious to the commotion her group were making. Guests said they “stood out” because of all the noise they were creating in the exclusive bar.
On Saturday morning, just hours before her death, Dionne Warwick spoke to Whitney to make sure they would be seated at the same table later that evening.
Tragically, that would be left empty.
Last night some US sources were speculating that the tragedy could have been caused by a cocktail of booze and the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, which could have led to severe drowsiness and caused the singer to fall asleep in her bath.
Whitney’s daughter Bobbi Kristina, an aspiring actress and musician, was still said to be distraught last night after being released from hospital.
She got into a furious row with police when they refused to let her into her mother’s hotel room to see her body.
Whitney’s cousin Dionne Warwick, who also went to the hotel to try to see the body, is said to be “inconsolable”.
Ex-husband Bobby Brown was among the first to react to the singer’s death. Despite being devastated by the news he went on stage to perform a concert with his band New Addition in Mississippi and said:“First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all. Second, I would like to say, I love you Whitney. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage.”

She had been getting ready for Clive Davis’s party, where stars including Tony Bennett were due to perform.
The hairdresser screamed after entering the bathroom and the bodyguard ran in and dragged the singer’s body from the water. Paramedics arrived at Whitney’s fourth-floor suite within minutes, but all attempts to resuscitate her failed.

Police were last night still trying to determine the cause of death. But it is believed they have ruled out foul play.

A Grammy Awards party that Whitney Houston was due to attend went ahead just hours after the tragic news of her death – in the same hotel where she died.
Whitney was pronounced dead in her suite on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton Hotel yesterday evening, with her body being kept in the room while the authorities investigated the scene.
Meanwhile, shocked stars including Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian and P Diddy were arriving downstairs for a Pre-Grammys gala in their best outfits.

“Whitney was a beautiful person and she had a talent beyond compare. She graced this stage... so many times. So simply put: Whitney would have wanted the music to go on.”
However, some celebrities claimed that yesterday evening was not the time to celebrate Whitney’s legacy, with Kelly Osbourne hitting out at the Pre-Grammys party.

She has now been released from hospital, with a source close to the family claiming that she was treated and released for stress and anxiety.
