The government seems to have started off on the wrong foot in its resolve to stop purchasing expensive vehicles.
Checks by The Citizen have established that recently the government received a fleet of 26 Toyota Land Cruiser V8 vehicles. Reports availed to this newspaper confirmed that the costly vehicles, also expensive to maintain, have been bought for the ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs for the Constitution Review Commission (CRC).
Going by the price of Sh150 million per vehicle, it means that the purchase has cost the government Sh4.2 billion. (mhhhh! bado hatujaweka operating & maintenance cost)
Speaking exclusively to The Citizen the minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Mr Mathias Chikawe, admitted that the government has bought the 28 vehicles to cater for members of the CRC to effectively discharge their responsibilities.
"Yes we have bought about 26 new vehicles after we bought two earlier for the chairman and his deputy... but the second batch consists of about 26 and will be used by commission members and supporting staff in collecting views on the new constitution," minister Chikawe said
He said his ministry was involved in buying the vehicles for the commissioners because since the last financial year the constitutional review commission had no government vote which would have allowed the purchase of facilities for the exercise.
The move comes only weeks after the Prime Minister, Mr Mizengo Pinda, told the nation that the government had resolved to do away with expensive vehicles. He said from now on it would purchase vehicles with engine capacity of 2000cc from the 3000cc which were a norm.
Tabling his office budget in august House in Dodoma, the Premier said the government plan to do away with cars which cost more for their maintenance.
Asked why his ministry had bought the vehicles against Mr Pinda's statement, Mr Chikawe said:
"The order for the vehicles was made before the Prime Minister's statement... we have decided to buy vehicles which would withstand our kind of roads because they will take the commissioners to remote areas."
He said after the CRC finishes its work, the government might decide to auction the vehicles. (Watauziana mafisadi wenyewe)
