Several vehicles have been impounded at Nateete Police Station as authorities intensify a nationwide crackdown on taxis and other vehicles found in dangerous mechanical condition.
The operation has seen several taxis taken off the road, with some drivers at the station disputing the reasons for their arrest.
Some drivers claimed they were intercepted while heading to garages to have their vehicles repaired, while others said they were arrested over what they considered minor mechanical faults, including faulty windscreen wipers.
Joel Bangizi, chairperson of the Mukono Taxi Stage in Nateete Taxi Park, called on the government to strengthen inspections of newly registered vehicles, arguing that some poorly maintained vehicles could be contributing to road crashes.
Bangizi also pointed to Uganda’s poor road conditions as another factor contributing to accidents and frequent vehicle breakdowns, urging authorities to address both vehicle safety and road infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the crackdown has already affected operations at taxi parks, with many taxis seen parked at Nateete Taxi Park as others were taken for mechanical repairs.
Authorities say the operation is aimed at removing mechanically unsafe vehicles from the roads and reducing crashes linked to vehicle defects.
However, taxi fares across Kampala and surrounding areas have risen seeing as dozens of taxis have been impounded. Passengers from Matugga to Kampala are now paying UGX 5000 from the ususl UGX 3000, while those travelling Kagoma to Kampala are paying UX 3000 form the usual UGX 2000.
