Terry turns focus to next year

John Terry is already setting his sights on next season's Premier League title after Chelsea all but lost it to Manchester United on Sunday.
The Blues' 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford saw United move six points clear at the summit with just two matches remaining.

Terry made a point of congratulating Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson after the game, but he has quickly turned his attention to next season.
He told Chelsea TV: "I just wished him well.
"You have to be graceful in defeat and we have thoroughly enjoyed the times we have won.
"Over the years, he has popped in and said congratulations to us and he and his team are well respected across the world.
"But it does hurt when you do it, and it drives you on as well.
"You get a focus for next year and we will be aiming to take it off them."
That looks set to be under new management, with Carlo Ancelotti appearing resigned to losing his job at the end of the season.
Beating United might have made Roman Abramovich think twice about wielding the axe.
Terry blamed what is set to be Chelsea's worst season since Abramovich bought the club not on Sunday's defeat but on their worst run in the league for almost 15 years at the end of 2010.

He said: "I remember Man United topping the form guide when we were probably down the bottom of it somewhere and that coincided with them overtaking us and giving themselves a nice cushion.
"Credit to our management and the lads for digging in, and the fans as well who have been brilliant all season, because two months ago we didn't look in it at all and we were worrying about qualification for the Champions League.
"But we put a good run together and gave ourselves an opportunity coming into Sunday's game so that deserves credit.
"Two months ago, you could maybe be happy about where we are now but you look back at the start of the season and you wouldn't be happy.
"We were in control and then we hit a run of bad form and we couldn't really get out of it quick enough.
"We dropped points home and away and that proved to be vital."
The defeat by United was painful in more way than one for Terry, who will be hoping to shake off a knock in time for Sunday's final home game of the season against Newcastle.
The defender, who was forced to move into midfield during the second half against United, said: "I got a knock first half when I was aiming to shepherd the ball out and Wayne (Rooney) just caught me on my hip.
"It got worse and worse in the game and, with us having already made our three subs, I swapped with Michael Essien because he can step back there into central defence."

Papers: Trophy on hold

Celebrations put on ice
Manchester United will not be presented with the Premier League trophy this weekend even if they earn the point they need to win a record 19th title against Blackburn at Ewood Park on Saturday lunchtime. Following their 2-1 win against Chelsea on Sunday, United will overtake Liverpool's record of 18 league championships - a record set by the Anfield team in 1990 – as long as they avoid defeat against Steve Kean's side. But United captain Nemanja Vidic will have to wait until the visit of Blackpool to Old Trafford on May 22 to lift the trophy after the League confirmed its intention to stand by its policy of holding the official presentation at the champions' final home game of the campaign. Sources at the Premier League have confirmed that the trophy will not be on standby at Ewood Park to cap United's celebrations should they win the league less than half-an-hour before Manchester City take to the field in the FA Cup final.
Rory Smith, Daily Telegraph
Elsewhere, The Independent claim Sky Sports "are hopeful their new signing Gary Neville can start his job early to be at Wembley as co-commentator on 28 May for the [Champions League] final against Barcelona".
The Sun also turn their attention to the Champions League final, claiming United aim to go on the offensive against Barcelona. "We have players who can cause any team a lot of bother," Sir Alex says. "Hopefully those attacking players will give Barcelona the problems that everyone thinks they are going to give us."

United are high 'n mighty
Sir Alex Ferguson hailed his side as the best England has ever seen as they virtually wrapped up a record 19th title. Goals from Javier Hernandez and Nemanja Vidic saw Manchester United power six points clear of Chelsea at the top with two games to go. And boss Fergie said: "It's fantastic to be the most successful team ever in the country. The minute we won that first title in my time here in 1992 the door opened - and we've been involved in the first two practically throughout that period. It's a fantastic achievement." United now need just a point to seal the Premier League crown and move clear of Liverpool as the most prolific championship winners of all time. Fergie added: "For the last 17 or 18 years it has been Arsenal and Chelsea as our nearest challengers and the last few years it has been Chelsea. Arsenal made a great attempt this year but them losing today and this win for us has finalised it. We deserve the title and, hopefully, we'll get that point at Blackburn in our next game on Saturday. But we'll give them 100 per cent respect because they are a good side battling for Premier League survival."
David Facey, The Sun
Meanwhile, Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp hailed the performance of Michael Carrick after Sunday's win over Chelsea in his Daily Mail column: "He has been in excellent form recently and has looked at home in that central midfield role.
It hasn't always been the case, but he is growing into the job."
In other news, the Mail claim Sir Alex will land his top summer target, Inter Milan's £30million Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder, if the Glazer family, agree to bankroll the deal. "It's up to the owners now," said an Old Trafford insider. "Sir Alex wants the player - it's just a matter of agreeing to the wage demands."

Reggie Miller, the great shooting guard for the Indiana Pacers, used to call it "winning time," the portion of a game when the best step up and get the job done. It's a concept that is pretty easy to talk about - and almost impossible to actually do. The reason we call sportsmen like Miller, or Muhammad Ali, or Jack Nicklaus "great" is because when the pressure was on, they were able to summon up that focus, make that basket, evade that jab, or sink that putt, with the entire world watching.
This weekend, two teams took giant steps towards securing league titles. Both can arguably claim to be the best in European soccer, and both will meet in just under three weeks time to settle the matter. Both have demonstrated all season long that the mental part of any sport - the part that cannot be coached, only reinforced - is the difference between owning that winning time and going home.
Manchester United and Barcelona are now a single point away from claiming their respective league titles. That they will win them is a given. Over the past two weeks, the English and Spanish sides have shown a resilience that their rivals have lacked, and it is that steel that has carried them to where they are.

United downed Chelsea on Sunday in a coolly efficient fashion that should end all talk of who the best team in England truly is. Taking just 36 seconds to go ahead behind a goal from Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, United broke Chelsea like cheap china. The difference maker on a team full of stars, no less, was not Wayne Rooney: It was Park Ji-Sung, a squad player who has shown a knack for seizing big games.
Park, tireless in midfield, set up the first goal and proved so distracting that Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti was forced to remove the two players he tortured at the half: $33m signing David Luiz and midfielder Jon Obi Mikel. The final 2-1 scoreline, padded by some lenient refereeing and a poached goal by Frank Lampard, in no way reflects what was truly a domineering performance by the Red Devils.
United didn't place a hand on the trophy with a single game, mind you. In fact, they have been forced to grind out more than their share of results on the backs of squad players like Park, Michael Carrick and Chris Smalling and can only finish with a maximum of 82 points, the lowest total since the 2000-01 Premier League season. They dropped more than their fair share of points on the road and were forced to stumble through an unconvincing stretch that saw them rocked by losses to Chelsea and Arsenal as both teams steadily gained on them.

The difference between United and their rivals, however, is belief, and for that, one has to look no further than their manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. Ferguson, who indeed has money to spend and a wealth of talent at his fingertips, has nonetheless convinced every man in his lineup that not only are they capable of winning games, but that they will win games. How else to explain Darron Gibson's performance against Schalke after the bitter hazing he has taken from some of the club's fans? Or the blossoming of mercurial and stormy types such as the Da Silva twins or Nani? Or the continued magnificence of Ryan Giggs and Edwin van der Sar, players that other clubs might have put to pasture years ago?
For proof, look no further than how Chelsea started their second half Sunday. Absent from the lineup were the men they spent $110m on in January (Fernando Torres, in the biggest game of his short Chelsea career, wasn't even trusted enough to start). Say what you want about the lucre of Chelsea, but all the money in the world cannot buy confidence, and even this Blues team that had taken 25 of their last 27 points to come back within touching distance of the top had no idea how to win this game.
Or look at another London club, Arsenal, which dropped an embarrassing match at Stoke, 3-1, earlier the same day. How is that a club that once had a realistic chance of winning a couple of trophies came so far off the rails? Ask chastened manager Arsene Wenger who admitted after the latest disaster that his young side is mentally weak. How weak? His captain, Cesc Fabregas, watched from the stands with a "thigh problem" as the official reason - and the real reason is that he, like half the team, has already checked out.

Barcelona are just as impressive, having come through one of the toughest gauntlets imaginable: playing their bitter rivals four times in 18 days with three trophies on the line. There, manager Pep Guardiola has taken a largely homegrown team of talent and molded them into what has to be considered the greatest club of their era. Yes, they have talent to spare. But in shooting down Real Madrid in the two races that matter - the Champions League and La Liga - they have shown that desire can trump all other concerns.
Consider that the heart of their squad has been playing high-level soccer for 36 straight months, winning a European Championship and a World Cup in that time and now looking as if they will add their third-straight league title. They may win their second European Cup inside three years, and under Guardiola have already completed the first treble in Spanish soccer history, just two seasons ago. This is a brutal, punishing schedule that has seen the heart of their squad have at most four months off in that span. And yet, the desire remains unabated: They have lost just twice in league play this season, and that should say it all.
Their only rivals are locked in bitter recriminations. Despite winning a trophy, the Spanish Cup, their indisputably talented manager Jose Mourinho is at war with the club, the press, and some of his players. Elsewhere, he has demonstrated that he can win. But he hasn't yet convinced this Madrid team of that, as we saw in the Champions League. There, he was tentative and conservative, his negative tactics acknowledging that his team could not play open soccer with Barcelona. The result was painful to watch.
The next chess match takes play in London, where United may well have an advantage. Neither team will fear the other, and both squads will believe they will win. If it is half as compelling as the drama we've seen in their leagues this season, we fans will be the true winners.

United close in on keeper Rui
Manchester United chiefs will fly to Lisbon today to negotiate a deal for Sporting keeper Rui Patricio. But the Portuguese club believe they are being used as a tool by United in their bid to land main target David de Gea from Atletico Madrid. The Old Trafford giants are adamant that is not the case and have so far knocked down stories of an £18million offer for De Gea being accepted by Atletico. They have already bid £7m for Patricio, which has been rejected by Sporting, who want £12m. Now they will meet Sporting officials face to face in the Portuguese capital and try to reach a compromise. Patricio, 23, is more experienced than De Gea, 20, as a Portuguese international who has made 167 first-team appearances for his club. That is more than twice as many as De Gea. But 6ft 3in Spanish giant De Gea is considered one of the world's best.
Neil Custis, The Sun
The Sun also claim United's players will share a £9million bonus if both the Premier League and Champions League trophies are secured later this month.
Gareth Bale is a top target for United and City in the summer, according to the Daily Star. Tottenham's Welsh wizard was named the PFA Player of the Year and certainly wouldn't come cheaply with talk of a £30million plus James Milner offer from Roberto Mancini's Blues. Meanwhile, another Welshman, Ryan Giggs, has his say in the Daily Express ahead of the Chelsea clash on Sunday. The midfield veteran insists United want all three points rather than settling for a draw, explaining: "We have to go out and attack like Manchester United do at Old Trafford. The crowd wouldn't have it any other way."

Class of 92 to reunite for Gary

Some of the stars of United's fabled 'Class of 92' are to be reunited at Old Trafford on Tuesday 24 May, when the Reds take on Juventus in Gary Neville's testimonial match.
Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs will take part in what promises to be a special occasion in the build-up to the Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley.
David Beckham has been invited to jet over from the United States but his participation has still to be confirmed.
Former midfield dynamo Butt is looking forward to turning out in front of the United faithful again. He enthused: "When Gary asked me to play in his game I immediately said yes, especially when I heard that the other 'Class of 92' players were going to be there too.
"It was a special time for all of us growing up and it is only now as you look back that you actually see what an amazing story it is. I am sure the fans will give him and the rest of us a great reception, as they mean the world to him."
Gary said: "I couldn't ask for more than to have all my friends back for one last time. If possible, it will make the night even more special for me and I hope the fans will enjoy seeing them back too.
"They were special times for us - we were young lads fulfilling our wildest dreams and hopefully we will get to experience that again against Juventus."

Gary's brother Phil will also pull on the red shirt again, six years after leaving the club where he grew up to join Everton.
The younger Neville said: "I am so excited to be going back to Old Trafford to celebrate what will be an amazing night for my brother. I am looking forward to playing with my brother and my friends one more time.
"It will be an emotional night for all the family but what a fitting way for Gary to bow out of a fantastic career."

Vidic targets Ewood party

Nemanja Vidic has called on United to wrap up the Barclays Premier League title at Blackburn on Saturday.
The Serbian centre-back does not want the race to go down to the final day, when United entertain relegation-haunted Blackpool, after the victory against Chelsea took the Reds to the brink of a record 19th league success.
When United were held to a goalless draw at Ewood Park last season, it dealt a costly blow to the Reds' bid for a fourth successive title. This Saturday's visit offers the perfect chance for redemption; ironically the same result would this time be enough to clinch the championship.
"Mathematically it's not [certain] but I think it's a big advantage - six points clear with two games left," Vidic told MUTV.
"Obviously, we have to focus on the next game against Blackburn already to win the title. We don't want to come to the last game and to be nervous. We have a big advantage and we are nearly there.
"It's important, first of all, to win the title. As well, to be captain of Manchester United is a big honour but, to lift the trophy, is even bigger.
"I'm just hoping we'll play properly next game and we can celebrate at Blackburn."
The no-nonsense defender applauded Sir Alex Ferguson's decision

dividends.
"I think, sometimes, especially at the end of the season, it's mental tiredness and not so much maybe physical," he added.
"The manager felt the team needed a bit of rest and we saw we had great energy, ran a lot and didn't give up in the whole game.
"I think it was a great decision by the manager, hopefully when you're winning games, the decisions are good but we are lucky this time that the decision was right."

Giggs unfazed by critics

Ryan Giggs has laughed off any criticism of United this season as the Reds stand on the brink of the title with a Wembley date against Barcelona already in the diary.
Some critics have sneered that the current squad cannot compare to many of Sir Alex Ferguson's previous sides and that 2010/2011 will simply not go down as a vintage campaign.
However, United have made a mockery of such suggestions and a fourth victory of the term against champions Chelsea has set up a glorious final few weeks.
Giggs is aware of the lack of credit being paid in some quarters but is certainly not unduly concerned.
"To be honest, it really doesn't bother us," he told MUTV. "We all concede that, in the first half of the season, we were not playing brilliantly but we were getting results.
"The second half of the season, after Christmas, we've been brilliant. The performances have been brilliant and so have the results.
"We've played some great stuff in both the European games and in the league so we don't really care what people say. We know the quality in the dressing room and so does the manager."
Giggs was also asked about whether a familiar team selection helped in the two 2-1 home wins against Chelsea - in the league and in Europe.

Giggs unfazed by critics

"I think so," he replied. "We know that we're capable of playing good football which we did in those two games. I felt that we did that, especially early on in the game.
"We knew that we had to just keep attacking because one goal often isn't enough against a team like Chelsea because of the attacking options they've got. You saw the pressure they put us under second half and they got the goal back. We knew that we had to just keep attacking, that's what we did in the Champions League games.
"It's a great start. It could have been quite easy for us to take our foot off the pedal. But I don't think we did that. We knew that we needed more than the one goal and it was great to see Vida's goal go in."

RIO FERDINAND has warned Barcelona that Manchester United have revenge in mind ahead of their Champions League final.

The two teams meet at Wembley on May 28 in European football's biggest clash - a repeat of the 2009 showpiece.
Nobody in the Red Devils squad has fond memories of that fixture - which saw the Spaniards emerge victorious after Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi secured a 2-0 win.
Barca's Champions League triumph was one of SIX trophies Pep Guardiola's men claimed that year.
Since then they have gone on to become recognised as one of the finest club sides in history.
But Ferdinand, 32, has vowed to avenge the loss United suffered at the Stadio Olimpico two years ago in Rome.
He said: "I have never watched the 2009 final again but matches like that are hard to forget. It is clear in your head.
"If you want to sit and think about games like that they come up quite easily. It is like bringing something up on the internet.
"I have rerun it in my head a few times and we just never played. We weren't Manchester United.
"On the way back we were sitting there thinking 'if only we had gone out and been the real Manchester United, it would have been different'.
"They always say you don't want to come off the pitch with any regrets. There were regrets that night.
"This time we will give a better account of ourselves."
United face the daunting prospect of figuring out how to deal with the best midfield partnership in the world in Spanish World Cup winners Xavi and Andres Iniesta.
And then there is the small matter of stopping Argentine ace Lionel Messi, who has scored an astonishing 52 goals in all competitions so far this season.
But Ferdinand - who was part of the United side that were beaten in Rome - reckons he and his team-mates can dispel Barca's air of invincibility.
He said: "We had that. You would stand in the tunnel before the match and feel the game was already won. But that won't happen with us."
Ferdinand insists United have enough star performers of their own in the likes of Wayne Rooney, Nani and Javier Hernandez to overcome Pep Guardiol'as side.
He added: "We have experienced players who have played against a lot of great teams.
"When we look around our own changing room, it instils you with confidence."

Transfer talk: Your say

Sir Alex Ferguson's comments about transfer targets have prompted journalists and fans alike to speculate as to which players will be signing for United this summer.
The boss said: "We have certain targets in mind and I think two or three will be fulfilled." (ManUtd.com, 29 March 2011).
The club has a policy of not commenting on press rumours and official statements are only issued - firstly on ManUtd.com of course - when deals are done and dusted.
In the meantime, it remains a guessing game for all of us. To while away the wait for official news, we're asking you to vote for the player you'd most like to see at United - just for fun.
We've compiled a list of some of the outfield stars who have been consistently linked with the club over the past weeks and months. Which of these eight would you go for?

BAYERN MUNICH have increased their bid for Manuel Neuer - a day after claiming talks with his club Schalke had stalled.

The Bavarians' first offer for the Germany No1 was a long way short of what Schalke want for the 25-year-old.
That left Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge sceptical about a deal being reached.
But with Manchester United still sniffing around the talented stopper, Bayern have acted quickly to up their original £16million proposal.
Rummenigge and Bayern managing director Karl Hopfner have attempted to thrash out a deal with Schalke directors Horst Heldt and Peter Peters.
And Rummenigge admitted: "We had a decent conversation."
