Sir Alex Ferguson's preparations for the Champions League final are threatening to have repercussions for some of the Premier League's relegation-threatened teams after it transpired he was planning to play a virtual reserve side against Blackpool in Manchester United's final game.
If United secure a record 19th league title by getting a point or more at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, Ferguson intends to rest almost his entire first-choice team against Blackpool, despite the controversy when he did the same on the final weekend of the 2006-07 season and a 1-0 win for West Ham United at Old Trafford meant the London club avoided relegation at the expense of Sheffield United.
There are potential implications for five of Blackpool's rivals in the lower reaches of the table, with Ian Holloway's side currently in the relegation places with Wigan Athletic and West Ham. Wolverhampton Wanderers are a point clear in 17th while Blackburn and Birmingham City have a further two points.
The Premier League is aware of the possibility of Holloway's team facing an under-strength side and it is likely that, if the title is confirmed at Ewood Park, the newly crowned champions will be reminded of their responsibilities in the buildup to the final weekend. The league stipulates in Rule E20 that "in every league match each participating club shall field a full strength team". Rule B13 notes that "each club shall behave towards each other club and the league with the utmost good faith".
Blackpool themselves have been fined this season for fielding a weakened team, when Holloway made 10 changes for their 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa in November. Blackpool lost the match only to a last-minute goal but the Premier League punished them with a £25,000 fine. Wolves were hit with a suspended fine for the same amount the previous season after Mick McCarthy did likewise in a 3-0 defeat at Manchester United.
Whether that would make any difference to Ferguson's planning remains to be seen. The episode in 2007 left Neil Warnock, then the Sheffield United manager, feeling "sick in the stomach" and with a "bitter taste". Warnock later revealed in his autobiography that Ferguson had rung him to apologise, explaining that he had felt compelled to rest players for the FA Cup final the following week. The apology, however, did not work. "So much for the integrity of the Premier League," Warnock wrote. "So much for fairness and justice in English football."
Ferguson also found himself in a similar position in the week before United's 2009 Champions League final against Barcelona, when his team faced a Hull City side in relegation danger. Again, Ferguson fielded what amounted to a "B" side including four players – Daniel Welbeck, Lee Martin, Ritchie De Laet and Darron Gibson – who were making their first league starts and seven aged 17 to 21 on the bench. United, however, won the match 1-0. Hull survived because Newcastle United lost at Aston Villa.
The difference this time is that United have six days to prepare for the Barcelona game, whereas in 2009 there were only three. Ferguson, nonetheless, has made it clear in the past he has to put his own team first, regardless of the consequences.
"People will talk about the integrity of the league but it is a natural thing for us to use our squad," he said in one interview. "The players wouldn't forgive me if I played the strongest team. They would say: 'What?' They would possibly be tiptoeing around, knowing they have a European final."
Ferguson, tongue in cheek, signalled his intentions to Holloway during a telephone conversation last week. Holloway, who had rung Ferguson to congratulate him on reaching his third Champions League final in four years, recalls Ferguson saying: "If we have [won the league], I'll play myself against you, my old son." The Blackpool manager said: "I'll hold him to that."

Focus on Chicharito

Javier Hernandez has exceeded everybody's expectations this season, including those of Sir Alex Ferguson.
The United boss admitted recently that he thought it would take the Mexican striker at least a year to settle in at the club, develop physically and adapt to the English game.

And yet, nine months after Hernandez made his debut at Wembley in the Community Shield, he's netted 20 goals and staked a solid claim for a regular place in the manager's starting line-up.

Sir Alex has certainly found it difficult to leave him out. Since the beginning of March, Hernandez has started 11 of United's 16 games (and scored in two of his three substitute appearances during the same period).

If we split the striker's United career in two we get a better picture of the shift in how Hernandez's fortunes have changed. In his first 21 United games (nine starts) he netted eight goals, with five coming from the bench. His subsequent 22 run-outs (15 starts) have yielded a further 11 strikes, with only three as a substitute.

Pele: Hernandez can be next Messi

May 10, 2011

Brazil legend Pele has been impressed by the impact made by Manchester United's Javier Hernandez this season and thinks the Mexican can be 'the next Lionel Messi'.

Pele has watched on as the 22-year-old has taken the Premier League by storm with 13 goals in 26 Premier League appearances for the club since his arrival in the summer. And the Brazilian has heaped praise onto the striker.
"There is no doubt that Hernandez is a promising player. He is excellent, I have seen some games of his on television and he is a fantastic footballer," Pele told a press conference. ''He could be the next Messi because he has great talent; he is a big surprise just as Hugo Sanchez was because he is another that scores a lot of goals.
"We should wait a little, because we still don't know how he will play in the Mexican team... but without doubt, he has huge potential."
However, Pele spoke in less glowing terms of the World Player of the Year, claiming that he has yet to replicate his club form for his country.
"There is a big difference between Barcelona's Messi and Argentina's Messi. When Messi plays in the Seleccion he is not the same player," he concluded.

Fletch's empathy with fans

Darren Fletcher can empathise with United's supporters as the Reds bid to clinch the first leg of a remarkable double at Ewood Park on Saturday.
The midfielder knows better than most what it's like to watch from the sidelines after two months out due to a virus that robbed him of nearly a stone in weight.
As the Scotland international hopes to be involved against Blackburn for Sir Alex Ferguson's title-chasers, he knows the fans will be put through the mill as they eagerly await the chance to celebrate at least a point that would put Chelsea out of reach.
"I turned into a bit of a mad fan [while I was out]," he told United Review. "It's odd: it seems the further away from it you are, the more intense the feelings.
"My family are glad I'm back now. They had to leave the house a few times when a game was on because I turned into a completely different person. It's frustrating watching on TV because there's nothing you can do to influence the situation."
Fletcher is keen to play some part in the season's gripping finale, with the manager hinting he could be involved in the Champions League final with Barcelona at Wembley after missing out on the Rome clash between the two European superpowers in 2009.
"I just want to contribute however I can," Fletcher stressed. "Whether that's starting or coming off the bench, it doesn't matter.

Worryingly for Manchester United's Premier League rivals, Sir Alex Ferguson claims another generation of stars is on its way.
A 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Sunday has left United needing just a point to wrap up a 19th top flight crown, edging them above arch-rivals Liverpool in that particular honours list.

There appears to be no stopping the Old Trafford juggernaut, with the Red Devils having dominated English football since the inception of the Premier League in 1992.
Continuous rotation of their playing staff has been the key to their success, with young talent drafted in to help cover the loss of ageing legs.
That remains the United blueprint heading forward, with the club taking great pride in their successful academy structure.
Add the talent currently working its way through the ranks to the likes of Nani, Anderson, Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez and it is easy to see why Ferguson believes the future is in safe hands at the Theatre of Dreams.
"Over the last decade, we've worked upon bringing young talent into the club, like, Wayne Rooney, Chicharito, Anderson and Nani, and we've brought all these players," said the legendary United boss.
"But that doesn't dismiss the fact that we like to produce our own young players and I think there are several players in the present youth team who are doing really well.
"The likes of Ryan Tunnicliffe and Ravel Morrison, you see some of them doing very, very well, so we're always going to put an emphasis on young players coming through from the youth team. That will always be the case.
"We've got some excellent young players of good ages, you know. Like, for instance, Chicharito, who is 22, Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson, who are 23, and Chris Smalling who's 21.
"So, yeah, we've got a good nucleus of young players in the club which gives you the foundation to be able to protect the future and know it's going to be alright."

    How true ManUK.
The way a well rested Giggs at CAM has played with Rooney in the hole and Lil Pea on the last shoulder and Tony on rw running up and down and Nani or Park on the left. That is why I think SAF will look to add Schneijder he spends big every 3 to 4 years and Giggs is awesome but at 37 he might get 25 games next year of 50 games that Man Utd will play.

Terry turns focus to next year

John Terry is already setting his sights on next season's Premier League title after Chelsea all but lost it to Manchester United on Sunday.
The Blues' 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford saw United move six points clear at the summit with just two matches remaining.

Terry made a point of congratulating Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson after the game, but he has quickly turned his attention to next season.
He told Chelsea TV: "I just wished him well.
"You have to be graceful in defeat and we have thoroughly enjoyed the times we have won.
"Over the years, he has popped in and said congratulations to us and he and his team are well respected across the world.
"But it does hurt when you do it, and it drives you on as well.
"You get a focus for next year and we will be aiming to take it off them."
That looks set to be under new management, with Carlo Ancelotti appearing resigned to losing his job at the end of the season.
Beating United might have made Roman Abramovich think twice about wielding the axe.
Terry blamed what is set to be Chelsea's worst season since Abramovich bought the club not on Sunday's defeat but on their worst run in the league for almost 15 years at the end of 2010.

He said: "I remember Man United topping the form guide when we were probably down the bottom of it somewhere and that coincided with them overtaking us and giving themselves a nice cushion.
"Credit to our management and the lads for digging in, and the fans as well who have been brilliant all season, because two months ago we didn't look in it at all and we were worrying about qualification for the Champions League.
"But we put a good run together and gave ourselves an opportunity coming into Sunday's game so that deserves credit.
"Two months ago, you could maybe be happy about where we are now but you look back at the start of the season and you wouldn't be happy.
"We were in control and then we hit a run of bad form and we couldn't really get out of it quick enough.
"We dropped points home and away and that proved to be vital."
The defeat by United was painful in more way than one for Terry, who will be hoping to shake off a knock in time for Sunday's final home game of the season against Newcastle.
The defender, who was forced to move into midfield during the second half against United, said: "I got a knock first half when I was aiming to shepherd the ball out and Wayne (Rooney) just caught me on my hip.
"It got worse and worse in the game and, with us having already made our three subs, I swapped with Michael Essien because he can step back there into central defence."

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard insists the Reds are determined to reclaim their league titles record from Manchester United.
Sunday's 2-1 success over nearest rivals Chelsea means United are almost certain to win the Premier League crown yet again, the 12th time since the league's inception in 1992.

And United will overtake Liverpool as the country's most successful club in league action, with their 19th title to Liverpool's 18, and Gerrard admits that hurts the Merseysiders.
Liverpool's impressive form since Kenny Dalglish's return as manager leads Gerrard to believe they are now once again on the up.
"It hurts because we held the record for so long," said Gerrard. "Give credit where it's due, they've overtaken us for the time being.
"But we are on our way back up and we won't give up the fight to overtake them again - don't worry about that. That is the motivation.
"We can still boast about the European Cups, of course, but everyone here will be doing everything we can to get the league record back."

Class of 92 to reunite for Gary

Some of the stars of United's fabled 'Class of 92' are to be reunited at Old Trafford on Tuesday 24 May, when the Reds take on Juventus in Gary Neville's testimonial match.

Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs will take part in what promises to be a special occasion in the build-up to the Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley.
David Beckham has been invited to jet over from the United States but his participation has still to be confirmed.
Former midfield dynamo Butt is looking forward to turning out in front of the United faithful again. He enthused: "When Gary asked me to play in his game I immediately said yes, especially when I heard that the other 'Class of 92' players were going to be there too.
"It was a special time for all of us growing up and it is only now as you look back that you actually see what an amazing story it is. I am sure the fans will give him and the rest of us a great reception, as they mean the world to him."
Gary said: "I couldn't ask for more than to have all my friends back for one last time. If possible, it will make the night even more special for me and I hope the fans will enjoy seeing them back too.
"They were special times for us - we were young lads fulfilling our wildest dreams and hopefully we will get to experience that again against Juventus."

Gary's brother Phil will also pull on the red shirt again, six years after leaving the club where he grew up to join Everton.
The younger Neville said: "I am so excited to be going back to Old Trafford to celebrate what will be an amazing night for my brother. I am looking forward to playing with my brother and my friends one more time.
"It will be an emotional night for all the family but what a fitting way for Gary to bow out of a fantastic career."

ANTONIO VALENCIA is to enter talks about a new contract at Manchester United as Europe's big guns sniff around.

The Ecuador winger has been in scintillating form since returning to the Red Devils side after six months out with a broken ankle.
His performances have made the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and AC Milan sit up and take serious notice.
Valencia, 25, signed for £16million from Wigan two years ago and he still has two years left on his current deal.
But now he is looking for a new long-term arrangement which is likely to be the biggest contract of his career.
A United insider said: "Valencia has been brilliant since coming back from his injury and United want to get him sorted with a new contract.
"But there are lots of other clubs showing interest and he knows he's in a healthy position."
Skipper NEMANJA VIDIC has revealed how United's critics have spurred the team on to glory.
He said: "People were saying we didn't have the individuals like we used to But you look at the names in this team and think, 'How could they say that?'"
