Manchester United's Paul Pogba isn't close to being the new Steven Gerrard, says ex-Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez

Paul Pogba isn't close to being the new Steven Gerrard – and is years away from comparison to the Liverpool legend.

Former Reds boss Rafael Benitez made the claim after he was asked whether the Manchester United man could be classed alongside Gerrard.

Pogba announced his return to fitness with a goal and assist in the 4-1 win over Newcastle United at the weekend, a result that kept United four points clear of Liverpool in the Premier League table.

Benitez, though, believes only when Pogba produces consistently impressive performances over a decade can he be considered in the same league as Gerrard.

Asked if the two were players were similar, the Newcastle boss said: “No, they're different. Stevie was a top-class player for so many years.

“He was very consistent and could make the difference in every game, with or without the ball.

“He was a top-class player. Pogba is a great player, but he still has to be consistent for years like Stevie was for 10 or 15 years.

“Pogba is not my player, so I don't need to talk too much about him. He's a great player, like the majority of the Manchester United players.”

For pogba to be compared to your legend Gerald at the agw of 24 only means that the boy is such a great player. Haters will always hate cos that is what they do. HATE
