Tanzania ilishiriki kwa mara ya kwanza Michezo ya Olimpiki mwaka 1964 jijini Tokyo ikiwa na wakimbiaji 4. Mwaka 1968 iliwakilishwa tena huko Mexico na Wanamichezo 4, Mwaka 1972 ilikuwa na Wanamichezo 15Nchini Ujerumani, Mwaka 1976 ilikosa michuano hiyo huko Montreal, Canada baadaye ilipelekea Wanariadha 41 mwaka 1980 jijini Moscow, Urusi.
Aidha, Tanzania ilifaikiwa kupeleka Wanamichezo 18 kwenye Michezo ya Olimpiki ya 1984 huko Los Angeles, Marekani, ikifuatiwa na Wanamichezo 10 mwaka 1988 huko Korea Kusini na Wanamichezo 9 mwaka 1992 huko Barcelona.

Six Tanzanian runners are today facing a challenging task among 500 athletes who will be vying for qualifying marks in the Nagai race in Japan for the next year’s Olympic Games in Paris, France.
The runners are Paul Makiya, Fabian Naasi, Peter Sulle, and Sarah Ramadhan, who will be competing in full marathon (42 km), while in half marathon (21km) are Josephat Gisemo and Transfora Mussa. All the runners are in high spirit, according to Athletics Tanzania (AT) secretary general Jackson Ndaweka.
Ndaweka said the athletes, who are under trainer Samson Ramadhan and former Tanzania marathoner Juma Ikangaa, have promised to fight hard in order to qualify for the multisport event. Already three runners, Alphonce Simbu, Gabriel Geay and Magdalena Shauri have secured the Olympic Games’ qualifying marks for Tanzania.
“All preparations are complete and we are expecting the runners to represent the country well in the event. Our aim is to see many athletes qualify for the next year’s Games scheduled from July 26 to August 11,” said Ndaweka.
Besides athletics, Tanzania is scheduled to field women football players through Twiga Stars, swimmers, amateur boxers, and judokas.
Already the Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) announced that there will be no universality places for the Games.
TOC urged sportsmen and women in the country to step up their quest for qualification and not to wait for universalities.
Tanzania first competed in the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo, where the former was represented by four runners.
Again, four sportsmen represented Tanzania in the 1968 Olympics held in Mexico City.
In the 1972 Munich Olympics in Germany, Tanzania was represented by 15 athletes, missing out on the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada and sending 41 athletes to the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.
The country then sent 18 sportsmen to the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA; ten sportsmen to the 1988 Olympics in South Korea; and nine sportsmen to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
