Chelsea FC (The Blues) | Special Thread

Maurizio Sarri has always had a habit of using the formation of 4-3-3 to set up nearly all of his games. However, is this really the best formation for us? Here’s a look into where and why Sarri tends to tweak the formation in given situations.
 
While attacking, Sarri prefers to have only three defenders at the back, who tend to not line up in the middle but rather on either side of the field, exposing a flank to the opposition. There is still a midfielder for cover,
 
but the rest of the players aim to be available at all times creating diamond or triangle shapes with their peers. The idea of this formation (call it a 3-3-4 if you want) is to comfortably keep the ball higher up the pitch and ease through the defense
 
When they lose the ball, pressurize the player with the ball to make a mistake or cut off their pass. This is easy since the majority of your players are usually close-by. In instances where the high pressure does not work, Chelsea quickly shuffle to a 4-5-1 shape,
 
aiming to stop any passes and break quickly to take advantage of any gaps. The majority of players are again in the midfield to ensure that when we do win the ball we don’t easily lose it again. Sometimes, Sarri also adapts the formation in a given situation to help the team.
 
One of the most common adaptations ive seen Sarri do is play in more of a false 9 format. This formation makes the role of the striker more focused on playmaking than shooting. This is a helpful change knowing our current strikers are misfiring and our wingers are in better form.
 
It also helps us add an extra man to our midfield if the opposition is aiming to suffocate the passing of our midfielders to create chances. Bournmouth, Arsenal and West Ham all used this tactic and found it to be rather effective. After the false nine change,
 
Our attacks became a lot better but our defense struggled to find their places, leading to a weaker defense. Hopefully more work on the training ground can fix that. Another common adaptation he may use is 4-3-2-1, but this usually requires a lot of strength in your LM/RM
 
and a in-form striker I have seen Sarri try it out at times in Europa, but it didn’t work out well so i doubt he’d continue. Chelsea are still looking for a fluent striker, meaning Sarri has to resort to other areas for goals, giving him a tactical disadvantage.
 
There are of course other things he’s tried, but they are not ‘changes’, rather just tweaks here and there. Will be interesting to see what else he has up his sleeves and how more effective he’ll be when we have a good striker up front

Huwa hakuna formation moja kwenye match. unaweza panga 433 lakini jinsi oponent wako anavyocheza mnaweza jikuta mnalazimika temporarily au permanently switch to other formations
