Jose Mourinho: Chelsea manager expects tough title defence

Chelsea must improve next season if they are to defend their Premier League title, says boss Jose Mourinho

The Blues were top of the table from late August and won the title with three games of the season remaining.

However, Mourinho, who has led the club to three league titles, says their rivals will improve next season.

"We have to be better if we want to be successful again. The other opponents are not going to accept this without a fight," he told Chelsea TV.

"Next year will be more difficult, but because it's difficult is one of the reasons why I came back to England. I will enjoy it again."

Despite his warning, the Portuguese told Chelsea fans during an open-top bus parade through west London that they should plan for another victory celebration next season.

"Thank you for everything, for all your support. Book another place for the parade next season. I hope we can give you that," he said.

Second-placed Manchester City and Arsenal, who finished third, are expected to bring in new signings while Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been told he can eclipse the £150m he spent last summer.

If Wenger was Mourinho...

The clearing of the stable will begin today in earnest (the difference: Mou started to build his winning team this time last year, Wenger was off to run commentaries in Brazil). There is no sentiment with clearing the stable, no players come and old players go – no hard feelings. To understand this concept means making a clear distinction between a charity case and the direction a team chooses to tow in the objectivity of success. Remember, not too long ago Wenger’s dismantling of Les Invisbles when it became necessary to curb salaries during the transition years from Highbury to the Emirate. The objective was to remain a Big Four while running a sustainable club. Today, this transition is complete and presumably over. We have outlived our excuse and it is time to come dressed for dinner again.

Suggesting a player that Arsene should sign is a pitfall attempted by many. They all failed. I will attempt another famed pitfall and see how many of these players will still be at Arsenal at the end of summer.

Mikel Atete – Mikel has been around British football a long time. To his credit he is more British than Spanish, except for his accent. But Atete is not lad and the years have taken their toll. If romantism is a feather-filled football, Atete will be eligible to play for another premier league side for another two seasons. But to still hold him at Arsenal will be laughable. Have an eye: Mou sends in Mikel Obi to slow down the other side, wear them out and close shop. Arsene sends in Mikel Atete and he slows down his own team! See.

Tomas Rosicky – Tomas has been unfortunate to be injury stricken. The great van Basten had to cut a great career short for this same reason. There is nothing to be ashamed of. Tomas can go on to greater things before calling it quits on the game. Football in the USA is growing and will not be as demanding as playing in the premiership. A decent run in the MLS could see a resurgent Rosicky for both country and club. I believe he owes this to his fans to take a bow at Arsenal.

Mathieu Flamini – Flamini (mac 2) is actually a downgrade to mac 1.2. The second coming of the ‘utility man’ has lacked the hunger of the first version. In some way, everything Coquelin has done right mirrors exactly the first installment of Flamini – the hungry outsider who took his one chance and ran with it. Flamini came back from Milan not an outsider but a ‘wanted’ man. He did not have to prove himself and did nothing to disprove why he should be kept on either. His tackles had become Italian-centric and his overall gameplay had become littered with errors, the labored consciousness of a man looking over his shoulders.

Abou Diaby – Poor lad. Every sport has a Diaby and Arsenal is the unlucky midwife. You lay off a player like Diaby too early and you are labeled a user. But Arsenal is no user when it comes to Diaby. Either his body has given up or the player has lost his mentality to fight. A harsh prognosis whichever way you look at it but one based on the reality of the past 5 seasons. No job outside Arsenal football club will give one such compassionate leave unless you were the CEO himself. Diaby is not the CEO, fortunately, but he is talented and French.

Carl Jenkinson – The London train has moved on since his loan move. Bellerin, Debuchy, Chambers is a good overcrowding that does Carl no favors.

Lukas Podolski – Same as Carl. Arsenal can get a new striker and offload Poldi. A good guy, no doubt, but we are talking about if Wenger had the brains of Mou.

Yaya Sanogo – Without mincing words, this lad is a poor version of Olivier. Let’s remember that Olivier is still not considered a great striker by Arsenal and premiership standards even with his goals and overall team play. He will someday be as good as a Chamakh. But is he going to be a Griezmann someday? Not by a mile, not in a dream. See the picture: Sanogo is akin to Zaha – moved too soon and overwhelmed by a big club.

Joel Campbell – He is going to take forever to grow. A bolt falls into place in the head of a young player, the moment you realize it is just a ball I can control, move it faster and better than the player in front of me – that age is a number on the wall; belief is everything. Unfortunately, the achievements in Brazil have not endeared belief into the circulatory system of Campbell. Campbell is a player Arsenal can sell with a buy-back Clause – ok, we failed horribly with this in the Cesc debacle (Chelsea gain) but Chelsea’s harvest of Matic proves it is still a workable option.

Ryo Miyaichi – I still do not understand this player. Maybe I will wake up from a dream and he got a blood transfusion from Messi and he becomes Messi. Messi, mercifully, is the epitome of progressive growth and supreme talent. Ryo, on the other hand, is the cultured pain we all endure with the bulk of all young talents; shoulda, coulda, woulda.

But Wenger is not Mourinho. He is at this time drinking wine and preparing to run commentaries for the upcoming Copa America. If there is any certain at Arsenal, it is that there will be no signings until deadline day. Congratulations, Mr. Wenger.

Hahahahahahah nimecheka kwelii
