Final whistle
verdict: Brilliant and
beautiful
First-half goals from Diego
Costa and Eden Hazard
ensured the Blues maintained
our 100 per cent home record
in the Barclays Premier
League, with the victory
against 10-man West
Bromwich Albion extending
our lead over second-placed
Southampton, who play Aston
Villa on Monday, to seven
points.
It was a dominant Chelsea
display from the very first
whistle, with the performance
of Baggies’ goalkeeper Ben
Foster a key factor in keeping
the score down, particularly
before the break.
Diego Costa’s 11 goal of the
season, a fine volley from an
Oscar cross, broke the
deadlock after 11 minutes,
with Hazard’s close-range
finish 14 minutes later, his
sixth of the campaign,
extending our advantage.
The visitors’ cause wasn’t
helped shortly afterwards
when Claudio Yacob was
shown a straight red card for
a foul on Diego Costa.
Jose Mourinho was delighted
with the performance of his
side, especially before the
break.
‘The first half was brilliant,
beautiful,’ he said. ‘The quality
of our football was high,
another dimension. We were
playing so well, so fast and
fluid. We made the pitch wide,
creating spaces to play. We
scored two goals and should
have scored more than that, it
was fantastic.
‘In the second half it was
different; we decreased the
intensity of our ball circulation
and made it easier for them to
occupy the spaces. I also have
to say they did very well, they
made the decision to be very
well organised defensively,
compact with two lines,
leaving one player up, and
they got a result which I think
gives them stability and
confidence.’
He explained why there was
a drop in intensity in the
second half
‘ Sometimes I have to realise
there are reasons for things;
national team matches, players
who had to play two matches
in a row coming back, travel,
we didn’t train properly, the
players knowing they have to
play in Germany on Tuesday so
the intensity went down.
‘They knew the points were
not at risk. The objective was
to get the three points. Many
times I’m upset but not today.
‘You have to think first about
the points and we did that
very well. If you ask me would
I have liked to kill the game in
the first half, 3-0 or 4-0, yes I
would. I would have liked to
score more goals in the
second half and give the
crowd more of what we did in
the first half, but it wasn’t
possible.
‘They did really well, you could
feel it from the beginning. I
can stimulate and motivate but
the reality is it’s up to them
and they were fantastic.’
Mourinho was asked about
the atmosphere in the
stadium
‘There is no comparison. I
don’t want to speak about it,
for good and for bad. They
pay me to coach and win
matches, not to be critical of
the crowd, so I feel sorry for
my comments a couple of
weeks ago. But the reality is
that today the difference today
was amazing.’
On comparisons with his
previous Chelsea team
‘ I cannot compare teams that
won everything with teams
that have won nothing. This
team have won nothing. The
other team finished a couple
of years ago, we have John
and Didier and nothing else.
‘These guys have to win if they
want to be seen as a great
team, it’s not about playing
beautiful football or being
autumn champions. They have
to win titles. But when I use
‘beautiful’ in relation to the
football we played in the first
half I think we all agree.’
West Brom manager Alan
Irvine, meanwhile, praised the
Blues.
‘They’re a really good team
and it will be extremely
difficult for anybody who
comes up against them,’ he
said.
‘In the form they’re in at the
moment you’d certainly put
them as favourites (for the
title), but there’s a long way to
go and this is a tough league.’

“We don’t have pressure to
lead,” he added. “The
pressure is for the ones who
are coming behind.
“I always felt the pressure
when I was behind, not
when I was on the top and
I’ve always been competing
for titles in my career.
“To be first is easier than to
be second. If you’re first, you
think just about yourself.
“If you’re second, you have
to think about yourselves
and your opponents. It’s
much easier to be first than
second.”
KEYWORDS:

Costa is likely to miss a game
at some point in the coming
weeks through suspension
as he has picked up four
yellow cards in 11 games.
But Mourinho is not worried
about him picking up the
card that means he sits out a
game.
“I just want him to get a
proper yellow card,” he said.
“A yellow card that is the
consequence of a football
action where he has to get a
card.
“I don’t want a stupid yellow
card. When he does, he does.
I have Drogba and Remy.”
He added: “I tell them all I
don’t want yellow cards, but
if it arrives in a normal
action, or something that’s
important for the team – like
making a foul, an ‘intelligent
foul’ to stop a counter-attack
– that’s fine.
“At this moment he behaves
very well, no issues with him.
He improved a lot since he
arrived.
“He’s a competitive guy, but
no problems at all. At this
moment, the referees
understand exactly that. He’s
getting what he deserves.”
The opening months of the

Of Chelsea’s summer
signings, only Diego Costa
and Filipe Luis, along with
January signing Kurt Zouma,
are yet to experience the
unique Christmas period that
the Premier League produces
– Didier Drogba and Cesc
Fabregas experienced it
during their first spells in
England.
And Mourinho paid tribute to
his staff and called on his
side to embrace the
challenges instead of shying
away from them.
He explained: “We have to
take care of them ourselves:
our training programme; our
recovery programme; the
way we think about the
process and the experience
we have of that.
“Our staff has experienced
many seasons in English
football. It’s very important.
The experience of the other
players is also important,
making them anticipate the
problems of that marathon.
“The mental expectation is
fundamental. If you do it not
in a happy way, thinking
that: ‘At this moment I
should be having Christmas
with my family in Portugal,
Brazil or France...’ ‘The guys
in Spain are on holiday...’ ‘The
guys in Germany are on
beautiful islands getting the
sun...’ If you think that, you
can’t do it.
“You have to do it happy, like
I do. Would I like a Christmas
in Portugal? Yes. But there
are a lot of positives.
“Give to the people what
they want. A Boxing Day full
of kids, ladies, families,
people happy to have
football. All you are doing if
you feel it in a positive way, it
makes you happy. If you’re
happy, it’s not difficult to do.”
Chelsea have managed to
avoid suffering the injuries
