DAR ES SALAAM: THE Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Welfare and Community Development has commended the progress of the Mzizima Towers Project worth 322.02bn/- being implemented by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), describing it as a strategic investment for the fund and the nation.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam today, March 16, 2026, shortly after touring around the project, the Committee Chairperson Hawa Chakoma said the pace and quality of the work is impressive while extending gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her decision to allow the project to continue.
Elaborating on the vitality of the project, the chairperson stated that it will play a big role in generating significant returns for the fund and contribute to national development.
“We have toured the project and witnessed the progress firsthand. The work being carried out here is very impressive and demonstrates strong leadership by NSSF management under Director General Masha Mshomba,” she said..
Additionally, she said that the committee is confident that the project will be completed as planned and will start delivering benefits to the fund.
Giving reports on the progress of the project, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations), Deus Sangu stated that the project has reached about 91 percent and is expected to be officially completed on December 31, 2026, while the hotel is scheduled to open in March 2027.
Elaborating, he noted that the project began in April 2013 and was initially expected to be completed in 2017 before experiencing delays due to several factors, including investment project audits conducted by relevant authorities, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the hotel industry, and design improvements aimed at ensuring the hotel meets international five-star standards.
Moreover, Mr Sangu said that the total cost of the project over 201.43bn/- has been spent so far and that a professional evaluation conducted in 2023 indicated that the project remains economically viable and is expected to recover its investment costs within 14 years.
Speaking during the visit, NSSF Director General Masha Mshomba thanked the committee members for taking time to inspect the project and observe the progress made so far.
“The Mzizima Towers Project is expected to increase the revenue of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) through the leasing of office space, commercial premises, and hotel services. It will also contribute to the growth of the tourism and business sectors in Dar es Salaam while also boosting government revenue through various taxes and levies,” he said.
