Nick Mwendwa: Ex-FKF Boss Embroiled in Ksh330 Million CHAN Tournament Scandal

Former FKF president Nick Mwendwa has been named among those suspected to have misused public funds meant for the failed CHAN 2018 tournament.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has initiated legal proceedings against several former sports officials, including ex-Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa, in connection with an alleged Ksh330 million scandal.
The lawsuit centers on funds reportedly lost through illegal and irregular stadium contracts awarded in 2017. The EACC alleges that payments were made for work that was never completed. The funds were purportedly channeled to Madrid, Spain, before being returned to Kenya via Auditel Limited, a Spanish-Kenyan company.
Among those targeted by the suit are former Sports Principal Secretary Peter Kaberia, former State Department for Sports Development Director Haron Komen Chebet, and former Ministry of Sports Procurement Head Isaac Okoth Omogi. Sports Kenya official John Ruga is also named.
Other individuals listed include former senior finance officer Stephen Njoroge Muthane, Samuelbaa Njoroge, Auditel director Marcos Gonzalez Puente, Antony Mwangi, and Kitheka Muema. Additionally, three companies—Restea Enterprise Limited, Leasepride Limited, and Leasepath Limited—are named as corporate defendants for their alleged role in receiving or laundering the funds.

The EACC is focusing on a Ksh330.5 million advance payment made to Auditel Kenya’s Spanish account in January 2018. This payment was part of a larger $15.9 million (Ksh1.5 billion at the time) contract for designing and installing security, communications, and lighting systems for Kenya's unsuccessful bid to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).
According to the anti-graft agency, the contractor invoiced an advance of $3.687 million (Ksh476 million per current exchange rate) just five weeks after the contract was signed, despite not fulfilling key contractual obligations, such as providing a milestone completion certificate.
“No work was performed, inspected, or accepted, meaning no value was received for the payment,” the EACC stated. The commission claims that multiple laws were broken, including the Public Procurement and Assets Disposal Act and the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.
By the time the contract expired, none of the specified security systems had been installed, a failure that significantly contributed to Kenya losing its hosting rights for the tournament.
Talanta Stadium, Hoima Stadium and Samia Suluhu Stadium are among facilities being assessed by CAF inspectors who are in East Africa.

CAF is on an inspection tour of facilities earmarked to host 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in East Africa even as reports claim the tournament could be moved to 2028.
Amid reports that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations could be postponed, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is on an inspection tour of key facilities in East Africa.
Reports on Wednesday claimed CAF is mulling over moving next year’s tournament to 2028 because of fears that Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania might not be ready in time with the proposal set to be discussed and possibly ratified during the CAF Executive Committee meeting in Tanzania on Friday.
However, as East Africa waits for that decision, CAF has already dispatched a team of technical experts who are in the region to assess key venues that will be used for the tournament with the inspection set to run until February 17.

“CAF’s inspections form part of a broader strategy to raise standards on and off the pitch across African football. By driving consistent, world-class benchmarks in infrastructure, operations and venue management, CAF aims to enhance the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON’s reputation as among the leading football tournaments in the world.
“These efforts also support CAF’s wider objective of helping to build a stronger and more self-sustaining football ecosystem on the continent through partnerships with governments to improve facilities, delivery capability and long-term football development.”

In Arusha, the CAF officials will look at the ongoing construction of Samia Suluhu Stadium while in Zanzibar, they will assess Amaan Stadium and Fumba stadiums.
Meanwhile, in Kenya, Talanta Stadium, which is still under construction, Kasarani Stadium, set to be closed for renovation, and Nyayo Stadium will be the facilities to be assessed as well as several designated training venues like Ulinzi Complex, Kenya Academy of Sports and Kenya Police Sacco grounds.

Next year’s Africa Cup of Nations could be postponed until 2028 owing to doubts over the readiness of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to host the tournament, in a move that would lead the Confederation of African Football to scrap one edition of its showpiece competition.
Despite rumoured interest from South Africa and Botswana in jointly hosting that 2028 tournament, there is growing expectation that the 2027 edition will be pushed back 12 months.
According to several sources in the ExCo, there are major concerns over the infrastructure in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and their ability to cope with a 24-team tournament due to be spread over 10 cities. Last August there were challenges including ticketing and security measures around the stadiums in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda that hosted the Africa Nations Championships (Chan) for domestic-based players. There are also understood to be issues with finding time in the international calendar to complete the qualification given the potential involvement of 10 African teams at this summer’s World Cup. Caf did not comment on any of the claims.
Any postponement would mean scrapping the tournament scheduled for 2028, for which Ethiopia had signalled its intention to rival a South Africa-Botswana bid. That would allow Caf to introduce its plan for a first African Nations League to take place in 2029. It wants that to replace the biennial Afcon and Chan as its chief source of income.
Last month Motsepe insisted that the 2027 tournament would go ahead. “I have a duty to develop football all over Africa,” he said. “I can’t have competitions only in those four countries where you’ve got the infrastructure. You’ve got to create opportunities for the other countries to build infrastructure as well. I’m confident that the Afcon in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda will be enormously successful.”
There is confusion over the Women’s Afcon due to start on 17 March after South Africa said it was ready to step in if required after Morocco apparently indicated it could no longer stage the tournament. Neither the Moroccan football federation nor Caf has confirmed that the tournament will be moved, with a decision expected at Friday’s ExCo meeting.
It is understood at least one member of the ExCo will raise questions about why Caf’s general secretary, Véron Mosengo-Omba, is still in his post despite reaching the statutory retirement age under Caf’s regulations.

wacha upumbavu vituo vyenu ni kwa ajili ya gas ya kupikia petroleum gas (LPG) na si ya magari! LPG hata sie tunavyo vituo vingi tu! Tunaongelea LNG for vehicles here! LPG can also be compressed too but not for powering vehicles! Ukunduni hamna LNG fueling stations! Zinahitaji infrastructure tofauti! wacha ujuaji Mkundustani wewe! BTW unajua maana ya mother filling station? With LNG as CNG we talk of condensation!

"Kenya’s remittance is still pending but it is anticipated to be finalized soon.
The funds form part of the formal hosting requirements agreed with CAF."
