TANROADS Unveils Multi-Billion Shilling Road Projects to Boost Mwanza Region Connectivity​

August 7, 2025

The Tanzanian government is preparing to launch a major infrastructure project aimed at transforming Mwanza City’s transportation network. According to Engineer Ambrose Pascal, the Mwanza Region Manager for the Tanzania Roads Agency (TANROADS), the project involves constructing a four-lane highway with a future expressway. This initiative is designed to alleviate severe traffic congestion on the Mwanza Urban to Usagara road and is part of a broader plan to stimulate economic growth in the city and surrounding regions. All preparations for the project are complete, and construction will begin as soon as a contractor is selected through the ongoing tender process.

In addition to the new highway, TANROADS is advancing several other significant road projects funded by the Central Government Fund. The Simiyu bridge, located 65 kilometers from Mwanza, is a key focus. This 1.75-kilometer bridge and its accompanying 3-kilometer connecting road are being built at a cost of 48 billion shillings. The project is currently 60% complete and is scheduled to be finished by November 30, 2025. The new bridge is expected to significantly reduce congestion by replacing a problematic one-way crossing.

Another crucial project underway is the construction of the Sukuma bridge. This bridge is being built at a cost of 9.78 billion shillings. The project, which includes a 2.3-kilometer connecting road, has also reached 60% completion and is expected to be finished by November 2025. Engineer Pascal noted that this bridge will create a more efficient travel route for people traveling from Bariadi, shortening their journey to Magu by approximately 40 kilometers compared to the existing Lamadi route.

These various infrastructure developments are anticipated to boost the productivity and economy of residents in Mwanza and nearby areas. In a related effort, a feasibility study is currently being conducted by Ethiopian Company and local experts to upgrade the Magu-Mahaha road to asphalt. This upgrade is expected to provide another excellent travel option once completed, further improving connectivity and ease of transportation across the region.
