Battle: Dar es Salaam vs Nairobi

Mbeya is just over hyped. Nothing there's to deserve city status. Teargass kufananisha Mbeya na Bondo au Siaya was simply symbolism. What he meant was that Mbeya is just an ordinary town that doesn't deserve a city status, just like Bondo or Siaya. Actually, I believe that there are towns in Tanzania that are way better than Mbeya but they are not cities.

It looks like it's your hometown so you have every right to defend it but looking at pictures that I have seen here since I joined this forum, Mbeya has nothing going for it that warrants a city status. It's just a town like any other.

And stop mentioning universities and industries as if that's what's makes a place qualify as a city. Thika town has so many industries (more than any other town in Kenya outside Nairobi and Mombasa) but it's not a city so your argument on this doesn't hold any ground!
 
Angejiuliza why I chose the lowest ranked towns in Kenya to compare with Mbeya and not Kisii, Kericho Thika, Kakamega.

To be frank, Kisii, Thika and Kakamega are well developed more than Mbeya yet they are not regarded cities in Kenya.
 
First Mbeya is not my hometown, I'm here for studies only. Mara ya kwanza kuja Mbeya ni 2023
Second, Mbeya is not overhyped, it's a city. So if universities, hospitals, industries, hotels, size, population, GDP etc doesn't make a place to be a city then what makes a place to be considered as a city. The looks???

And yes we have towns in Tanzania like Moshi which look better than Mbeya but they are not cities, because in Tanzania a city is combination of many factors, not just the way it looks

Okay let me just address this kwa sababu sitaki kuwa naingia humu kubishana na nyinyi kila siku.

Tanzania sio Kenya, sawa? Huku Tanzania ili place iwe city kuna standard zetu wenyewe tumejiwekea, hatutumii Kenyan standards, tunazo zetu wenyewe

Mbeya imepewa hadhi ya jiji kwa sababu inatimiza vigezo ambavyo serikali ya Tanzania hutumia kutangaza eneo kuwa jiji.

1. Makao makuu ya Mkoa
Mbeya ni makao makuu ya Mkoa wa Mbeya.
Makao makuu ya mkoa huwa na uzito mkubwa kiutawala, jambo ambalo linaipa hadhi ya jiji.

2. Idadi kubwa ya watu
Mbeya ina idadi kubwa ya wakazi wa mijini ukilinganisha na miji mingine mingi Tanzania.
Hata kama hakuna majengo marefu, jiji linaenea eneo kubwa na lina mitaa mingi yenye watu wengi.
Jiji la Mbeya lina takribani watu laki 6, hata money circulation ni kubwa

3. Umuhimu wa kiuchumi
Mbeya ni kitovu muhimu cha biashara na usafirishaji kwa Ukanda wa Nyanda za Juu Kusini na nchi jirani kama Zambia, Malawi na DRC. Ina:
  • Kituo kikuu cha reli ya TAZARA
  • Barabara kuu zinazounganisha mikoa na nchi jirani
  • Uwanja wa Ndege wa Kimataifa wa Songwe
  • Masoko makubwa ya kilimo (Uyole, Soko Matola, Igawilo n.k.)
  • Bandari kavu ambayo ipo busy, Dry port

4. Miundombinu ya Mjini
Hadhi ya jiji pia kwa hapa Tanzania hutokana na huduma za mijini. Mbeya ina:
  • Hospitali nyingi
  • Universities nyingi
  • Benki nyingi
  • Viwanda vingi
  • Ofisi nyingi za serikali ya mkoa na halmashauri

5. Maendeleo ya kihistoria
Mbeya imekua makazi makubwa tangu enzi za ukoloni kutokana na uchimbaji madini, kilimo na usafirishaji. Ukuaji huu wa muda mrefu uliisaidia kupata hadhi ya jiji.

Kwa kifupi:

Mbeya ni jiji kwa sababu ya umuhimu wake kiutawala, idadi ya watu, uchumi, na miundombinu na sio mwonekano wa skyline au majengo marefu.

Mbeya haina skyscrapers, majengo mengi Mbeya ni floor 5 hadi 7 kushuka. Hata tallest buildings hapa zina around 10 floors only. Na hii ni kwa sababu soil ya Mbeya hairuhusu skyscrapers
Hata sasahivi mji umeanza kukua tena baada ya kulala kwa muda mrefu, majengo yote mapya yanayojengwa 99% ni less than 7 floors. Na mji huu utaendelea kuwa hivi na majengo mafupi

Mbeya ni sehemu nzuri yenye milima mingi, maisha ni very cheap, kuna chakula kingi sana, hali ya hewa nzuri ya ubaridi mwaka mzima, mvua nyingi na ardhi yenye rutuba
Pia maeneo yote ya slums ya Mbeya ni kwamba nyumba hizo zilijengwa miaka ya zamani, sikuhizi watu wanaojenga nyumba Mbeya wanajenga nyumba nzuri na za kisasa

Mwenzako Nicxie anasema natetea Mbeya eti kwa kuwa ni my home town, Mbeya sio hometown yangu, ila huu ni mwaka wa 3 nipo Mbeya. Nilikuwepo high school miaka 2 na November nimekuja pia kwa ajili ya masomo yangu ya ngazi ya juu, niko more than 850km from home

So nakuambia tu hizo Bondo na Siaya hata zingekuwa hapa Tanzania zisingekuwa cities, kwa sababu hazijafikia viwango vya kuwa city Tanzania. Mbeya imekidhi vigezo na huku kwetu skyscrapers sio kigezo cha sehemu kuwa city.

Let me focus on this section coz the rest don't make any sense to me.

You mentioned universities. Talking of universities, Thika has three and close to ten colleges.

It has several hospitals of course

Industries - It is the third most industrialized town in Kenya after Nairobi and Mombasa

Of course it has several hotels as well

On population, I can bet on my three cents that it's way populated than Mbeya given its closeness to Nairobi and the fact that it's located in kiambu, the second most populous county in Kenya.

GDP. Thika is the biggest town in Kiambu county, which has the third biggest GDP in Kenya after Nairobi and Nakuru. Given that it is Kiambu's biggest and most vibrant town, its GDP is definitely way bigger than Mbeya's.

Despite all that, it's still not a city in Kenya. So my question is, if these are some of the things that make a place a city, why is Thika not a city yet inashinda Mbeya in almost all those points you mentioned?

Jamaa anatumia nguvu nyingi sana kutetea Mbeya city.

He mentions economic significance (GDP), population, universities, infrastructure and many other things.

If you look at all these things, sioni kitu hata moja Mbeya inashindia Thika.

Take infrastructure for instance. Tell me ni infrastructure gani iko Mbeya coz we've seen tens of Mbeya pictures here.

Nimefuatilia Thika, I would say it's more developed than Mbeya in infrastructure especially when considering the Thika highway. But Thika is small, and more concentrated in one area, population yake ni around 300K, half of Mbeya's population. When it comes to size of the city, Thika is way smaller than Mbeya
Hata huku Tanzania kuna miji kama Moshi na Iringa ambayo imeendelea vizuri tu na sio cities.

So why is Mbeya a city and Thika is not?
Because in Tanzania the city status is mostly administrative. Despite Thika being industrialized and having better infrastructure, still it's not a economical hub of the region, it's not bigger and more populated than Mbeya, it doesn't have a lot of government offices than Mbeya, it's near Nairobi which means it's just like the part of Nairobi metropolitan area, haina administrative power kubwa kama Mbeya

Also Kenyan city status requires political approval and strict legal criteria than Tanzania. I would say Thika is just like Moshi town in Tanzania. A developed place but still it's not a city because it didn't reach its country's city status qualification.
