Who said UNESCO doesn't list modern buildings as Heritage Sites? Bauhaus School, Sydney Opera House, Guggenheim Museum, Falling Waters et al. are listed as Heritage Sites yet they are modern buildings.
I still rate the European cities best world over maybe closely followed by American cities.....A glass facade can never play a trick on me but rather the overral functionality and simplicity.I would 100% live in Zurich over any Chinese City.

Ancient Rome and Greece architecture (Classical architecture) for instance had been long forgotten after the collapse of the Roman Empire. Its revival was attempted several times by many architects during the Renaissance period but they did not succeed. And to add on that, the Renaissance period is renowned to have produced some of the greatest minds in history such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo etc. Classical architecture construction techniques were so powerful that these geniuses could not revive it. It was later revived in the 18th-19th century during the Neo-Classical movement (New Classical) by architects such as Karl Friedrcih Schinkel. I have come to understand that some people do not really know the evolution of architecture therefore cannot appreciate the old.
