IPP now ventures into motor vehicle assembly business

IPP executive chairman Dr Reginald Mengi yesterday entered into a joint partnership with a Korean company to establish the first Tanzanian motor vehicle assembly plant with an initial investment of $10 million (over 23 billion/-).

According to Dr Mengi, the plant will assemble 1,000 vehicles per year and provide 500 direct plus 1,000 indirect employment opportunities.

It will go by the name IPP Automobile Limited and is a joint partnership with Youngsan Glonet Corporation, the technical representative of Zyle Daewoo Commercial Vehicle and Hyundai Motor Corporation from South Korea.

He said assembling functions will begin with three types of vehicles - commercial and construction trucks; buses of all ranges; and sports utility vehicles (SUV). The first locally-assembled vehicle is expected to be finalized between September and October next year.

South Korea’s ambassador to Tanzania, Song Geum-Young, witnessed the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between IPP and Youngsan Glonet, describing it as the start of a new era of cooperation between the two countries.

IPP also recently teamed up with the Dubai-based electronic manufacturing company Touchmate to start producing cell phones and other popular electronic gadgets from early next year.

The Touchmate agreement includes an 11.5 billion/- ($5 million) to manufacture smart phones and other electronic gadgets like computers, iPads, Bluetooth music speakers, headphones, earphones, and various home appliances.

Solar-powered tablets will be manufactured for use mainly by Tanzanian students, especially those studying in rural areas where electricity is insufficient. The tablets will be installed with e-books as per Tanzanian primary and secondary school curricular, he explained.
