Not-so-young Gunners are little lost boys in this man's world
It is not 11 men against 11 babies any more. Arsenal are out of their nappies. That much was obvious last night. They are getting closer to the age of maturity, a lot closer, but they still have an embarrassing tendency to cut themselves shaving. And even though they competed well with their hosts, Arsenal will be haunted by the realisation that they could not hurt a Manchester United side that is not what it was. Many had expected Arsene Wenger's team to come to Old Trafford last night and end United's unbeaten record this season in the same way that United finally ended Arsenal's Invincibles 49-match unbeaten run here six years ago. But although this match was fiercely contested, there was not the same intensity about it as some of the classic encounters between these two sides down the years. United are a weaker side without Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. They are not the team that destroyed Arsenal in the "Men v Babies" Champions League tie the season before last. But, on last night's showing, Arsenal are not quite ready to overtake them yet in the race for Chelsea's title.

'It is a big frustration and disappointment'

On whether Arsenal deserved more from the game…

What I feel doesn't matter. We lost the game and I think to be as objective as I can. We were up on the intensity level and we were up on the organisational level. Overall, I think that Manchester United defended very well. The technical quality of the game was average on both sides because the pitch was very poor in my opinion and the game suffered a lot from it.

Manchester United played a very simple game but they were efficient at it because they scored a goal and we didn't create enough chances. You have to give them credit because they defended very well and their defence didn't make any mistakes. Our passing was not quick or sharp enough to get them out of position.

On the state of the Old Trafford pitch…
If I ask you whether you want a good pitch or a bad pitch what do you say? They made technical mistakes as well because of the pitch. It was bouncy and slippery as well.

English Comment: Manchester United Loss Proves Once Again That Arsenal Fall Short On The Big Occasion

Arsene Wenger's men continue to infuriate in the crunch games

Patrice Evra could not help but grin at the final whistle like a gloating child who had just been handed the class prize as he celebrated Manchester United's 1-0 win over Arsenal. The full-back is one of the most outspoken characters in football and managed to rile Arsenal supporters last week by claiming the Gunners are simply a "training centre" and slamming their recent record as "a load of rubbish".
Infuriatingly for Arsenal fans worldwide, Arsene Wenger's side then went out and once again proved him right.
Arsenal are not so much academy as they are kindergarten when it comes to the games that really matter against the big boys.
When it was put to Wenger that perhaps Evra was right, the Arsenal manager brushed off the question by claiming he could only make an "objective judgement" on the game.
If the Frenchman wants to draw verdicts on objective analysis based on evidence then someone better tell him that his side have now lost 10 and drawn one of their last 11 games against Manchester United and Chelsea in all competitions, scoring only five goals in those games. Even the solitary draw was against Sir Alex Ferguson's side when they needed just a point to win the title.

'There are no trophies, there is nothing' | Patrice Evra was right about Arsenal​

Indeed, their only victory so far this season in a game of note was a 3-0 win at Manchester City in October and that was not a challenging task after Dedryck Boyata was sent off for the hosts just four minutes into the game. Had the Belgian stayed on the pitch, then their record so far this season against their direct competitors would be nigh on embarrassing.
Somehow, Arsenal have managed to hang on in the title race despite failing against their biggest rivals time and again, even including a humiliating 3-2 home defeat by Tottenham after they had taken a two-goal lead.
If Evra does not think the Gunners warrant a second look, it's because he does not see them as challengers to United.
Why should he? Arsenal have not won a single trophy since he arrived in Manchester and have been limited to a role as also-rans behind United and Chelsea. The Londoners may not be in 'crisis' – as Evra provocatively claimed – but they are far too fragile.
In fact, Arsenal have taken just 11 points out of a possible 30 from 10 games against the Premier League's current top 11 and all three of their victories came against 10 men.
The lack of leadership and authority of their side was highlighted by the choice of Tomas Rosicky as captain on Monday night as Cesc Fabregas was not ruled fit enough to start. You can't win the title with kids, and nor can you win it with wimps.
Arsenal players snapped into tackles from the first minute at Old Trafford as if they had a point to prove, and Evra might have reflected that he was more likely to get 'knocked out' by a flying boot than the visitors' attractive football.
But after Park Ji-Sung looped home his clever header it was effectively game over as United slammed the door shut and Arsenal lost their belief save for a brief spell of pressure in the second half.

It was a familiar result for Wenger's side and could have been even worse had Wayne Rooney not blasted his penalty high into the stands. The Arsenal boss seemed to hang his head in resignation towards the end of the game, but no-one realised he was actually blaming the pitch for his side's failure.
The only novelty factor was the presence of Wojciech Szczesny making his Premier League debut in the Arsenal goal. The 20-year-old Pole was solid with his handling but the mere fact that he was thrust into the side on such a big occasion highlights Arsenal's long-held problem between the sticks.
What will hurt Arsenal is that United seem so ready to swat them away, to write them off as nothing more than an irritant that will disappear around the end of March when the heat is cranked up a notch. But you can hardly blame them.
Wenger's team came into the game with best away record in the Premier League but once again failed to beat a big team – a psychological ailment as much as it is a blow.
As usual, they had possession and stroked the ball around in midfield, but they were completely lacking in penetration against a United side that was well organised but below its best.
Evra's only concession to the Gunners had been that they play nice football, but he might even be forced to re-appraise that judgement after such a toothless performance.
It has become too much of a recurring theme to try to excuse Arsenal's regular defeats to United and thrashings at the hands of Chelsea.
Such is the inconsistency of their performances, the Gunners teeter between a potentially excellent side and a collapsing pack of cards from week to week.
It would be no surprise if Arsenal cruise past Stoke on Saturday at the Emirates, but it is equally predictable that they will again surrender against Chelsea on December 27.
Arsenal are so desperate for a trophy that they are even trying in the League Cup this season, a tacit acknowledgement from Wenger that his side need to build some kind of winning mentality. After all, it's already been five years and the club's trophy cabinet has picked up a few layers of dust.
Maybe, one day, Arsenal with have the last laugh.
But for now they are nothing more than an aesthetically pleasing side that don't have the capacity to perform on the big occasion or the mentality to mount a title challenge. Evra was right.

THE truth hurts.

Patrice Evra threw a grenade in the direction of Arsene Wenger ahead of Monday's match by insisting Arsenal do not have the substance to win a major trophy.

As much as it pains me to say, Evra was 100 per cent right. And he was clearly vindicated by both the scoreline and the Gunners' performance at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United left-back merely said what lots of other people think.

In today's age, current professionals are generally not allowed to have an opinion, so fair play to Evra for his honesty.

He is not afraid to take the consequences of his words and I respect that.

I'm sure some Arsenal fans will continue to give me stick by saying I'm negative, but would they rather I lied, because I can't do that.

Strangers stop me in the street and accuse me of not loving the badge any more. That is not true - I am only being honest.

Arsenal played some decent football in the second half but they never really looked like hurting United despite seeing plenty of the ball.

Everyone remembers the Total Football of the Dutch team in the 1970s but they didn't win anything, either.

Arsenal have managed one draw and 10 defeats in 11 matches against both United and Chelsea. That says it all!

To think Wenger's team finished the 2003-04 season unbeaten but this current one, although extremely talented, are anything but invincible. As Evra says, when you look at the results, it is difficult to really say United and Arsenal are currently big rivals.

If Gooners are happy when Arsene Wenger says he doesn't need to sign any players next month, then so be it.

Manchester United defended exceptionally well. Nemanja Vidic delivered a monster performance, roughed up Marouane Chamakh early on and the Moroccan, apart from one chance, did not threaten much.

It was disappointing to see Samir Nasri start the game wide on the right.

I know he has played well there this season, but I thought he would have been more effective in his favourite central position where he is able to use space to greater effect. Just remember what he did for France against England. Instead, Wenger chose to play Tomas Rosicky in that hole behind Chamakh and he wasn't effective. Arsenal only managed a couple of shots in the game so that says it all.

The visitors had the possession in the second half but were frustrated. I thought Wojciech Szczesny was excellent in goal and I would definitely start him against Stoke on Saturday.

Given the choice, I'd rather have him in goal right now.

I have been critical of the two centre-backs, Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci, but in fairness, I thought they both did OK.

On Monday night, I would love to have seen a Vieira, Overmars or Anelka attack United. But offensively, Arsenal were below-par and predictable and were well-marshalled by Alex Ferguson's back line.

I would have loved to have seen Theo Walcott play up front when he was introduced - Rio and Vidic would have been very worried by his pace.

I can understand why Theo is so frustrated at not starting many games - and why he is desperate to play in his favourite position. Because when he does begin a match, he is stuck out wide.

Wenger keeps insisting Theo's best position is up front alongside another striker so I find it very strange why he is not playing him in that spot.

Theo has been at the club a long time now. I think he has earned the right to knock on Wenger's door and ask for a few explanations.

As a former striker, I have absolutely no doubt Theo can be a prolific goalscorer - far more effective than as a right winger. He should be one of the focal points of the team not just a sub.

He was brought on with 13 minutes to go which is not long enough. Fergie, quite clearly, has worked out how to play Arsenal.

When you consider the Gunners arrived top, it would have been nice to have seen a better game.

There have been some brilliant Premier League clashes this season but, unfortunately, this was not one of the better ones. Now Arsenal must bounce back again from this latest disappointment and they cannot afford any more poor home performances.

Stoke will be tough on Saturday but Arsenal should have enough to win. Then on December 27, they must contend with Chelsea and Didier Drogba, who loves playing against them.

Arsenal HAVE to beat them. Another defeat and you will have to wonder whether they stand a chance of the title.

Chelsea also have a massive match against United on Sunday. On current form, United will edge it, even though they are not playing at their best.

And I am sticking with United as my tip for the title. Once they get themselves into position at the top in the second half of the season, they rarely give it away.
