Arsenal Must Avoid Manchester United In The Champions League Draw - Oleg Luzhny

Ukrainian feels Arsene Wenger's men are better against continental teams

Ukraine's captain Oleg Luzhny joined Arsenal in 1999 having impressed in Dynamo Kyiv's 4-2 defeat of the Gunners in the Champions League.

Although never displacing Lee Dixon or Lauren at right-back, 'The Horse' played 110 games for the Gunners, won the Double in 2002 and in 2003 lifted the FA Cup in his final game for the north London side.

Seven years on and Luzhny, now 41 and Dynamo Kyiv's assistant coach, still watches every Arsenal game.

Talking exclusively to Goal.com UK, he reveals who he'd like the Gunners to face in the next round of the Champions League, who he'd like them to avoid and who he thinks will win the tournament. He also offers Wenger some transfer tips along the way.

"I think Arsenal would do better not to draw an English team. I think they do better against the continental teams because Manchester United are so strong right now," says Luzhny.

If the Gunners can avoid Alex Ferguson's team, however, Luzhny believes they are one of three teams who will win the Champions League.

"I think the favourites to win the Champions League are Arsenal, Barcelona and Inter Milan - I think two of these teams will be in the final," he says.

One-horse race | Luzhny spent four years at Arsenal

Jose Mourinho's side impressed the Kyiv coach at Stamford Bridge, particularly the match-winner Samuel Eto'o.

"Eto'o for me is fantastic - I don't understand why Barcelona didn't keep him. I prefer him to Ibrahimovic because although he's not as strong, he's more of team player."

Despite his soft spot for the Cameroonian, Luzhny favours Barca to retain their title thanks to the "unbelievable control" of the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi and Luzhny's favourite, Yaya Toure.

When UEFA make the Champions League draw for Arsenal's quarter-finalists, the ex-Gunner will be keeping his fingers crossed that the Gunners are matched with CSKA Moscow. "If Arsenal draw CSKA Moscow or Bordeaux they should go through and if Arsene would like tips on CSKA Moscow's strengths and weaknesses he should call me," he says.

"I can tell you now that they have a good defence. The defence and the keeper have played in the national team for a long time together – maybe six or seven years. But their striker [Wagner Love] is not good enough."

Russian international goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev has repeatedly been linked with top Premier League clubs including the Gunners in recent years but, despite the rumours, Luzhny reckons his old boss would do well to avoid signing him.

"I don't like Akinfeev and wouldn't recommend him for Arsenal because he's inconsistent; one game he's very good and then the next he makes mistakes."

When it comes to the current Arsenal team, Luzhny has been impressed with the form of Andrey Arshavin as well as the Arsenal full-backs Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna, but like all Arsenal fans, laments the injury to Robin van Persie: "It's such a shame he's injured," he says, "Arsenal are much stronger with him in the side"

Luzhny was as surprised as anyone when his former team-mate Sol Campbell re-joined the Gunners, but believes he has been a valuable addition to the side.

"It was a good signing by Arsene because young players need an experienced player like Sol alongside to help them.

"But if I had to choose between a fit William Gallas and Sol, I'd have to go for Gallas because he's quicker and younger."

A muscular player in his day, it's perhaps no surprise that Luzhny would also like to see a bit more power in the current Arsenal team.

"This Arsenal side is completely different to the one I played in; we were stronger and faster than they are now.

"We had Overmars, Ljungberg, Pires and Petit. Now Arsenal are more technical and more controlled but I think they aren't quite strong enough for English football.

"I'd like to see Arsenal with stronger players in the middle like Vieira and Gilberto.

"I think my old Arsenal team would beat the current Arsenal side.

Belo

Kwa hiyo kwa sababu Oleg Luzhny ndio mwalimu wako (I presume) anayekufanya uwachukie Gunners kakwambia hivyo ndio unaona hapa ni mahali pa kusemea. Msemaji wa Arsenal ni Arsene unless I'm missing something from Old trafford. Vipi mbona unaanza kuweweseka?

The draw for the Champions League Quarter-Finals takes place on Friday

Who could we face in the Champions League?

Arsenal will discover the identity of their next Champions League opponents when the draw for the Quarter-Finals takes place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland at 11am (UK time) on Friday.

The draw for the Semi-Finals also takes place on Friday, so the Gunners will soon have their potential road to Madrid mapped out.

After winning Group H Arsène Wenger's side suffered a 2-1 first-leg defeat in Porto in the First Knockout Round. But they reversed that with a 5-0 home win in the return fixture to secure a place in the Quarter-Finals.

There is no 'country protection' at this stage, so Arsenal have seven possible opponents.

Barcelona
With three European Cups to their name, holders Barcelona are the bookmakers' favourites to win this season's competition. They overcame Stuttgart in the previous round with a 4-0 home victory following a 1-1 draw in the first leg. Earlier in the tournament Barca topped Group F, which also feature Inter Milan. Pep Guardiola's side are currently level on points with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

Bayern Munich
Bayern were runners up in Group A, which also featured French champions Bordeaux and Italian outfit Juventus, who were dumped out of the competition. They progressed to the Quarter-Finals on away goals after their clash with Fiorentina finished 4-4 on aggregate. The German side have four European Cups to their name and are currently top of the Bundesliga. Arsenal last faced Bayern in the 2004/05 Champions League last 16 but despite a 1-0 second-leg victory at Highbury the Gunners lost 3-2 on aggregate.

Bordeaux
Bordeaux are making their first appearance in the Quarter-Finals since the European Cup was re-formatted as the Champions League. They topped Group A before knocking out Olympiacos at the round of 16. They won the first leg 1-0 and prevailed 2-1 in the second leg. Bordeaux are currently joint top of French Ligue 1 and hold a game in hand over the four clubs trailing them.

CSKA Moscow
CSKA Moscow reached the Quarter-Finals after beating Sevilla 3-2 on aggregate in the previous round. They finished runners-up in Group B earlier in the competition. Managed by Leonid Slutsky, the Russian side have just begun their 2010 domestic season. Arsenal last played CSKA in the 2006/07 Group Stage. The Russians won their home leg 1-0 and earned a 0-0 draw at Emirates Stadium.

Inter Milan

Inter knocked out Chelsea in the last round after coming second in Group F. Jose Mourinho's side won the first leg at the San Siro 2-1 before registering a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge. The Italians have only met Arsenal twice in competitive football with both games taking place in the 2003/04 Champions League Group Stage. Inter won 3-0 in London but Arsenal stunned the San Siro with an incredible 5-1 away victory. The defeat was Inter's worst result on home soil in European football.

Olympique Lyonnais

Lyon disposed of Real Madrid in the last 16 after following up a 1-0 home win with a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu. Lyon finished behind Fiorentina in Group E earlier in the competition, conceding just three goals in their six Group Stage games. They are currently fifth in their domestic league, trailing leaders Bordeaux by two points in a six-way title race.

Manchester United

Manchester United put seven past AC Milan over the two legs of their last 16 clash. Sir Alex Ferguson's side won the home leg 4-0 after registering a 3-2 victory at the San Siro. The Red Devils are in the hunt for a treble having already lifted this season's Carling Cup. They lead Arsenal by two points in the Premier League title race.
Arsenal.com will bring you details of the draw as soon as it is made on Friday.

The first leg of Arsenal's Quarter Final will be played on Tuesday 30 or Wednesday 31 March with the return leg the following week, on Tuesday 6 or Wednesday 7 April

Fabregas, Rosicky and Song set for return

By Richard Clarke

Arsène Wenger expects to welcome back three midfielders - including captain Cesc Fabregas - for the visit of West Ham on Saturday.

However the Arsenal manager is increasingly concerned about the ongoing absence of William Gallas.

Fabregas has been out since the win over Burnley on March 6 because of a hamstring injury, meanwhile Tomas Rosicky missed the win at Hull on Saturday due to a mild groin problem. Both are expected to pass fitness tests on Friday morning.

With Alex Song also available after a two-game domestic suspension, Arsenal's midfield is nearly back to full strength. In addition, striker Carlos Vela may also be added to the squad.

However Gallas is still absent with, what Wenger described as, "an endless calf injury". The Frenchman has missed the last six games with the problem and will sit out at least two more.

It is a significant cloud on an otherwise improving injury picture.

"Cesc and Tomas have a final test tomorrow morning," Wenger told TV Online before training on Thursday. "They should be available for Saturday.

"From the last game we don't lose anybody. So normally we should have Fabregas, Carlos Vela and Rosicky back. Plus of course we have Song coming back from suspension.

"However William Gallas will not be available this week or at Birmingham. It is going on and on. It is a concern.

"It is an endless calf strain and so we need Sol Campbell and Mikael Silvestre to be highly ready to help us out."
