Tuachane nae.
Serikali ikachukua, ikalilipa lile deni, ikaikarabati, ikamrudishia. Nyerere akapokea.
Sasa, Nyerere hakuwa tapeli mjanja mjanja. Katika nchi ya "kinoko" kama hiyo, ndugu yetu Nyerere angeambiwa, wait a minute now Mister Integrity, say that again, you gave the house away, got the mortgage paid off, by public money, then got the house kicked back to you, took it with clean deed. Who authorized the goverment payoff, from what funds, whose budget allocation? That's not fishy to you? Geraaare here...
Uhuni mtupu. Ufisadi na machukizo. Sisi ndio tunajisifu tuna maadili ya Kiafrika. Wanasema, nenda kafikiri zaidi, go figure.

He called in his commercial bank manager and asked for a loan. Nyerere later nationalised the bank but kept up his payments. When he retired as Tanzania's first President in 1985, he gave the Msasani house he had built to the state. He waived all the payments he had made leaving the state with the balance. Somewhat to his chagrin, the state paid off the mortgage and gave him the house back; including all the upkeep costs that went with it.
Whenever he could, Nyerere went back to his village. There he had a farm - of sorts. Olusegun Obasanjo, then a farmer and now Nigeria's President, once observed that although Nyerere had more tractors than he did, the Tanzanian would never be a commercial farmer.

Of the four houses he possessed - one in Msasani, Dar-es-Salaam and three in Butiama, his native village - two were gifts. He built the first house before joining politics. In 1974, the party decided the house was no longer worthy of his status and built him another one.
On April 13, 1999, which was taken to be Mwalimu's 77th birthday, the army gave him another house in Butiama as a birthday present, mainly because his library was getting larger by the day and there was no longer enough space in his Butiama village houses for his books.

Speaking on behalf of her mother, Mama Maria Nyerere at the late walimu's residence in Msasani in the city yesterday Makongoro Nyerere said that the house his father lived in [at Magomeni] was owned by the colonial government and that his late father was only a tenant.
Makongoro said that in 1959, the late Nyerere built his own house next to the disputed one where he lived in for a period of six months before shifting to another government house located at Sea View also in the city.
He sold the house he had built at Magomeni to Ambassador Mzee ibandebage. Therefore the family has no claim on any of the two houses, including the one at Maduka Sita, he clarified.
