Government Commitments on Tanzania's Power Outages from 2010 to 2024
Government Commitments on Tanzania's Power Outages from 2010 to 2024
Over the past decade, Tanzania has grappled with persistent power outages, prompting successive governments to make commitments to address the issue. A review of these commitments reveals a recurring pattern of setting deadlines for resolving the problem. Here is a timeline of government promises and actions related to power outages in the country from 2010 to 2024.
2010-2015: Periodic Commitments and Extended Deadlines
The timeline began in 2010 when TANESCO's then-Relations Manager, Badra Masoud, announced a 30-day nationwide power rationing with the assurance that it would end in January 2011. However, over the following years, different officials, including Secretary-General Eliakim Maswi and Board Chairman Robert Mboma, made promises that extended the resolution deadline to 2025.
2017-2021: Continued Pledges and Ministerial Orders
In December 2017, former Minister of Energy and Minerals Dr. Medard pledged the end of power rationing by December 15, 2017. Subsequent years witnessed orders from Minister Kalemani to TANESCO to eliminate power shortages by February 2016 and, later, the suspension of nationwide power rationing in March 2020. Despite these announcements, the problem persisted.
2022-2024: Evolving Promises and Legislative Resolution
The timeline progressed with former TANESCO Director Maharage Chande setting a deadline of March 2022 for the end of power rationing. However, this was later extended to November 2022. In July 2023, former Energy Minister January Makamba indicated that powering the Nyerere Hydroelectric Power Plant (JNHPP) would resolve the issue. The most recent commitment came in September 2024 when President Samia Suluhu Hassan gave TANESCO six months to end the power rationing, with a deadline set for March 25, 2025.
As Tanzania navigates through these commitments and deadlines, the government faces the challenge of fulfilling promises made over the years. The recent resolution by the Parliament, giving the government until June 2024 to address the power outages, highlights the ongoing efforts and pressures to find a sustainable solution to this long-standing issue.
