Zimbabwe: The turmoil, reconciliation, and the future!

Zimbabwe: The turmoil, reconciliation, and the future!

source:http://allafrica.com/stories/200705150770.html

Take the US government, for instance. On December 21, 2001, President George W. Bush signed into law Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001 with the aim of cutting off all financial aid to Harare, including all debt cancellations that Zimbabwe would otherwise have been eligible to! This piece of legislation was sponsored by Senator William Frist and co-sponsored by four others including Senator Hillary Clinton.

How could this deliberate freezing of grants and aid not have negatively impacted Zimbabwe's financial standing, even marginally, within a global economy? With such measures, should it then surprise anyone that Zimbabwe would churn out the highest inflation rate in the world? By contrast, would the British economy survive under similar sanctions and assault?

They have done these not because they question the land redistribution programme as inherently unfair, but because the ultimate losers within the programmes' framework are their kin. Had the US been so objectively concerned with "human rights abuses" across the world, it would have passed similar legislation before the Rwandan genocide spilled out of hand.

In the 21st Century global economic situation that is racially-inclined, Mugabe's Zimbabwe presents a classical case of the bleak odds confronting a black-led African nation struggling to survive against the relentless onslaught of the West's economic might.

Clearly, the target of the economic sanctions is the crippling of his government, as though Zimbabwean "problems" lie with Mugabe himself. Perhaps they do. But this reasoning deliberately fails to differentiate between the government and its policies, managed by Mugabe on the one hand, and the Zimbabwean economy on the other, which is manned by a heterogeneous mix of actors, majority of whom have completely no say in, and are actively removed from engineering his policies.

Official inflation has hit 3220%!!!!. Hivi kwa nini tutetee huu uozo jamani? the old man should go...........awape nafasi wengine wajaribu. mwambieni kwamba Zim is bigger than him!

Mikuki,
Trust me hata akija nani bila kurudisha ardhi hili swala haliwezekani kwisha hata kidogo... Mugabe was Old toka mwaka 1990... baada ya miaka yake kumi ya kwanza.
hakuna anayemtetea kabisa ila tusije miss the point kuwa Mugabe is not the problem kama alivyokuwa Saadam!..na tulivyoelewa sisi. Saadam Kesha ondelewa - Mission accomplished wakatangaza then why are they still there if Sadaam was the case?

Zimbabwe case is more than just Mugabe.... Hii ndio lugha nayozungumza mimi..Na sintapenda Mugabe aondolewe kisha Zimbabwe iwe another Iraq.

Some thing to think about!

Mkandara Zim iwe Iraq mara ngapi? Ardhi si mzee mzima kachukua..inafanya nini? Mkandara..I repeat, I disavow what wazungu did to Africa, but its unacceptable hawa viongozi wetu kutuchukua for granted on the pretext ya wazungu! Our leaders have failed us and should stop blame game!! Daktari unamlipa $16 kwa mwezi tell me which kind of utawala are you talking about, uzalendo gani huu jamani? wananchi wanakufa enmasse, madawa hospitalini hakuna..kwa nini asiwaachie wengine. wako zaidi ya mil. 16! Yaani sasa what Mugabe is doing ni kuallocate resources zote ku make sure anabaki madarakani! HE CAN DO NOTHING, KAMA WAZUNGU HAWATOI PESA! Hapana jamani..the old man should go!!! Awaonee huruma wazimbabwe! Whether we like it or not..Zim needs $$$$ from Western countries (its a bitter truth)..lakini hana ujanja..aondoke tuu....The country is becoming hopeless than Somalia....

Mikuki,

It does'nt matter who comes to power.
Lakini kesho Hamas wakisema wanaitambua Israel utaona mambo tofauti kabisa! it's not their leader maanake toka 1947 viongozi wamekuwa wakiuawa kila siku na kila aliyefuatia alikuwa wanted!.. It's their policy ndiyo sababu kubwa sio uzee ama ujana wa kiongozi.

This is Mugabe's response when things turned sour: He made sure that all unemployed and low income earners who migrated in towns are returned to their small huts in the 'gomos' The human right watch produced this report when it happened. Mugabe code named operation MURAMBATSVINA (CLEAR THE FILTH). He managed to do that but at what cost?

It is not true that the opposition want to return the land to the whites neither does the white Zimbabweans refuse with the land, the problem is the politicians under Robert Mugabe who took land for themselves. The list underneath is of confirmed VIP's allocation of land conducted in 2000's up to 2002. The poor black Zimbabweans do not have land up to now, prime farms which used to produce the majority of food in the country now lie idle under the named politicians who do no have a clue about farming.

Dua,

Imekuwaje ghafla-bin-vu wakawa hawawezi tena kuzalisha?

Mkandara,
You a right kwamba kilichowachukiza Wazungu ni kitendo cha Mugabe kuwanyanganya ardhi ndugu zao. Nakuhakikishia kwamba Mugabe asingegawa ardhi yangemkuta makubwa kuliko haya yanayomkuta sasa.

Mwalimu aliwaita kila majina hawa jamaa including International Ministry of Finance[IMF]. Sote tunakumbuka cha moto kilichotupata.

Mkandara, ni kweli there will be no policy change.

Dua we are on the same page. Mkandara w are on the same page but on a different language! Swala sio kurudisha ardhi, hata mimi nisingesupport hilo. After all ingekuwa issue gani kama lets angeadopt sera ya ardhi Tanzania? At all!

Kaka Mkandara ukifika Zim you will know what Iam talking here, very few people enjoy this land which was appropriated in their name in the first place! Ni wale wale wenye political leverage (majaji, mawaziri, mabalozi, senior military officers nk) waliopewa ardhi ambayo leo hawaitumii. Wengine wako nje ya nchi, wengine wako serikalini..they are not tilling the land. Na you cant expect mtu ambaye hajawahi kulima umpe ekari elfu moja za ardhi on the spot kwamba atalima...they know nothing about kilimo!!!Mugabe decided to use the land as the last weapon baada ya kuona mambo yamemchachia! Ok, granted wazungu wanamuumiza kwa sababu ya ardhi....sasa vile vipigo vya wapinzani, udhibiti wa haki za raia..what has that got to do with the west? lets see things in a bigger picture. Mugabe wants to remain in power and he cant do that without oppressing the populace ambao unfortunately they are too ill eqipped to resist. Imagine inflation ya 3700% ikiwa 10% tunafeel heat popote tulipo..sasa hapo........Imagine...

Tunayoyasema ndo hayo...akiamua kuweka Puppet wake kama Mujuru au Msika au Mnangagwa..I doubt kama wataendeleza sera zake..watamgeuka tuu, tumewaona wangapi bwana.......Huwezi ukaitawala Zim in its current state ikatawalika. Never! Personally simchukii Bob, ila nimemdharau sana kuamua kubakia madarakani kwa kutumia any means irrespective of the price kwa wananchi....

'Start Heifer Scheme With Resettled Farmers'

GOVERNMENT has asked owners of Surrey Farm along the Harare-Marondera Road to start a heifer scheme with resettled farmers on nearby farms since Surrey cannot carry the 2 500 cattle on its 500 hectares.

Under the scheme, the resettled farmers would retain the calf and give the cow back to the farm in a scheme where the new farmers would breed cattle to sell to the farm's abattoir.

The farm runs an abattoir but fears abound that if the cattle do not get adequate grazing pastures they could all die.

The farm owners used to irrigate grazing pastures and were able to feed their cattle. There is inadequate drinking water for the cattle since the farm dam has dried up.

The Governor and Resident Minister of Mashonaland East Province Cde Ray Kaukonde visited the farm on Monday and agreed with farm owner Mr Phillip Dechassart that he should pass on some cows to resettled farmers.

Hapa huyu mzee aliamua kuanzisha usisi na uwao which was wrong in the first place. Hakuna anayetamani kuwa tegemezi, ila kama wazungu walivyosema (dont bite the hands which feeds you while you are still hungry)..Mzee alichemka...bwana wote tulitawaliwa..siyo yeye peke yake....Kenya, South Africa, Namibia..whatever analogies we want to bring..Mugabe was dead wrong in his policies... and he will be! Philosophy ya viongozi wetu kubakia madarakani..ndo hizo..Zim wanasheria za ajabu ajabu sana..na zote ukiangalia in reality zinamuumiza mtu wa kawaida....You guys tuache nadharia hapa..watu wanaoumia ni wananchi.

Kuhusu GB NA TB KUONDOKA madarakani..it will change little. Dunia ya leo bwana ni kijiji we want it or not! haya maneno ya democracy human rights na rule of law....irrespective of their meaning..yanakotupeleka ni kwingine kabisa..Infact just know siku hizi hakuna sovereignity!!! Viongozi wetu hawana ujanja!! So does Mugabe.

Mikuki,

Ukame, na Vikwazo vya uchumi, are the major culprits here, and not what Mugabe is doing on a day to day basis.

Dua,
Meltdown Murambatsvina one year on: A special report from The Solidarity Peace Trust a non governmental organisation registered in South Africa read on.

Dua as I said ealier, Mugabe is not the ONLY problem.. it is the ruling Party!.. Do I support what is happening there?....The answer is NO…let me quote this line from P.C Ncube:- "Ten years of rejection by those mandated with ensuring the well-being of the weak as well as the strong, has seen our members in the informal sector eking out a living in situations which ensure only abject poverty and despair."
This message explain a lot more than just names!
On Mrambatsvina Operation:- The operation was initiated by a well respected, educated woman - Harare Commission Chairperson - Dr. Jameson Kurasha.
At what cost?...well, same happened in Dar with the Machingas, Mauaji ya Pemba na Mwembechai.. we did condemn but no one asked the President to step down.

Here is the fact of the operation from wikimedia:-
Overall responsibility for the clearances rests with the ruling party, ZANU- PF. The previous Chairperson of the Harare Commission, Dr. Jameson Kurasha, initiated Operation Murambatsvina weeks after the disputed elections were held there. The Harare Commission is currently running the affairs of the City of Harare despite the fact that there is a pending application to the High Court questioning its authority to do so.

It is not true that the opposition want to return the land to the whites neither does the white Zimbabweans refuse with the land, the problem is the politicians under Robert Mugabe who took land for themselves. The list underneath is of confirmed VIP's allocation of land conducted in 2000's up to 2002.
Dua,
I don't dispute the fact that Mugabe and his Governmentare very wrong allocating land to VIPs. The question remain is this what devastated Zimbabwe's agriculture-based economy and led to massive food shortages?.
Poor black Zimbabweans do not have land up to now, prime farms which used to produce the majority of food in the country now lie idle under the named politicians who do no have a clue about farming.
WOW!
Yes, The poor blacks do not have land… this is very true and I condemn the government for that, yet it doesn't solve the problem. Traditionally communal farms (blacks) used to produce the great portion of food crops way back before land redistribution reform, most of these farmes have moved to cities looking for better way of life. The only food crop commercial farming produced (white farmer) was maize.
Now, lets ask ourselves, . How many blacks Zimbabweans out there could run commercial farming sector?..How many do have capital to invest?.Is this any defferent from what we are facing here at home?
In my opinion there is no easy answer to all this. Land grabbing by VIPs is happening at home right before our eyes and strange enough the country's economy is said to be Booming while the land lie idle!

Mkandara leo nilikuwa nasoma hali ya maisha ya Zim kwenye op-ed moja "nywele zimenisisimka" mpaka nikajiuliza hivi Africa tunakwenda wapi? Kwa kweli hali inatisha.....solution ni ipi? labda tuanze kujadili kipi kifanyike tuache kufinger point! Maana kila mtu ana maoni yake depending from which angle! We imagine tunawategemea SADC, AU et al..wakati wote wanapeleka bakuri asubuhi kwa IMF na WB, Jamani Africa needs fundamental change, first from our mindset. Tujue huu ulimwengu umekuwa shaped in such away kwamba kujiamlia mambo wenyewe ni vigumu TENA. Its a global village..sasa huyu mwenyekiti wa hicho kijiji ni nani na alichaguliwa vipi..usiulize!!! Ila ZIM is just a TRAGEDY! Na I tell you the worse is yet to come.......walioshikiria hii dunia ni wengine. I believe Mgabe aondoke then tuanze upya, hata kama haitasolve lakini..Zim na akina developing countries tunakoelekea hali ni BLEAK!

It is an insult to Zimbabweans to say that the operation was similar to what happened in Dar etc. 700,000 people lost their homes the population is nearer to that of Zanzibar. The UN referred this to as 'indiscriminate and unjustified' and more than two million suffered in one way or another. If you remember well Mrs Tibaijuka was sent by UN to assess the situation.

To put insult to injury most of those demolished were proper houses with services like electricity and water. The coclusion of Solidarity Peace Trust in Bulawayo was: 'in 87% of cases in these two Bulawayo suburbs, the government did not demolish slums, but living space of high standard.' Ask yourself why should Mugabe do this? (p40) The government didn't do the exercise the way the commission recommended, they had a hidden agenda. Mugabe was so scared about these people as a political threat at that particular time, so he managed to use the government machinery. (remember Yugoslavia all dictators end that way - mass demonstration).

Traditionally communal farms (blacks) used to produce the great portion of food crops way back before land redistribution reform, most of these farmes have moved to cities looking for better way of life. The only food crop commercial farming produced (white farmer) was maize.

I don't believe the above are facts and the communal farms proportion of food was not that high, you better revisit the statistics of Zimbabwe Farmers Union - you can recall as well that the White-Zimbabwean farmers were about 5000 only but with their skills over the years they managed to organise themselves in what they knew best but at the moment most of them left or stopped farming altogether.

If what you are telling us has any truth then all of a sudden Zimbabwe is having drought every year? (What happened to the irrigation schemes?) Wherever you went there were farms being irrigated, surely the picture is bigger than what we see.

Well I am not supporting bad policies whether in Tanzania or Zimbabwe. Mugabe has failed himself and zimbabweans he should just d**!

Mikuki,
How to deal with western countries is a puzzle!

Dua,
It is an insult to Zimbabweans to say that the operation was similar to what happened in Dar etc. 700,000 people lost their homes the population is nearer to that of Zanzibar. The UN referred this to as 'indiscriminate and unjustified' and more than two million suffered in one way or another. If you remember well Mrs Tibaijuka was sent by UN to assess the situation.

Dua if you believe the operation was political motivated then what is the defferent?..Can you define boundaries for what is considered acceptible and with the scale?..Is there a depravity rating system to quantify just how bad a government can be by the magnitude of the crimes committed?
I guess not.

Mrs Tibaijuka was sent!...that says much! so were other sent to assess in Zanzibar! Kongo, Darfur and many other places. It doesn't have to be UN or Tibaijuka.
I don't believe the above are facts and the communal farms proportion of food was not that high, you better revisit the statistics of Zimbabwe Farmers Union - you can recall as well that the White-Zimbabwean farmers were about 5000 only but with their skills over the years they managed to organise themselves in what they knew best but at the moment most of them left or stopped farming altogether

Well, if you don't believe! then we don't have an issue here. 'cause you will be speculating. You have statistics from Zimbabwe Farmer Union, - Bring it on!..

Sasa hivi China inasomesha watu kwa nguvu zake zote, indeed in most prestigious Western Universities..Chinese wanaograduate ni wengi sana..they have seen it...and they..are laying foundations...sisi je?...ni balaa. where are we matching?

Mkandara..Sipendi kukataa tamaa, lakini honestly from all angles Africa we are doomed! Lets continue fighting in a best way though. You cant imagine siku ya kupiga kura I went with high hopes in this administration-only to be proved wrong- in a hard way. JK kwa kweli historia itamhukumu! I loved and trusted this guy but, BUT, LISTEN..., I still have hopes in my continent.

Mikuki,

Dawa itatoka west! no doubt about that - West only!

Mkandara

The Zimbabwe Farmers union site is down and I suspect this has been like that for a very long time. The point which I reiterate will not change, Mugabe has ruled for 27 years. This is already too much, he imagine himself as a semi-god and he should take full responsibility for his mess.

I managed to get some information about farmers in Zimbabwe this was way back in 2003

By Peta Thornycroft in Harare
(Filed: 07/08/2003)

Zimbabwe's commercial farmers held their 60th annual congress yesterday, but it was a day of heartache, gloom and tears for the dwindling band, some of whom now depend on charity to survive.

As another appeal went out for international donors to replenish emergency food stocks for almost half Zimbabwe's population, President Robert Mugabe renewed expired notices of acquisition on 152 farms yesterday, including five prime ranches in the Matabeleland province, belonging to the Oppenheimer mining dynasty of South Africa.

White commercial farmers hear nothing to lift their gloom at their 60th annual congress Doug Taylor-Freeme, the vice-president of the farmers' union, told the meeting that Mr Mugabe's policies had destroyed the agricultural sector. "Zimbabwe continues on its downward path to economic ruin with no relief in sight," he said. Agricultural production had fallen more than 50 per cent in the past year, he added.

One farmer who survived the three-year campaign against the mainly white commercial farmers only to succumb a month ago is Bruce Stobart, 40, who was attending his last congress.

"I went into every deal available to stay on my farm, but when a mob arrived at my house and ate my son's pet rabbits, and did all the other usual stuff, we had to go, and now there is nothing, absolutely nothing I can do."

To try to stay on his farm in Mazowe, about 20 miles outside the capital, Harare, he gave two thirds of his land, about 1,600 acres, to Mr Mugabe's supporters. Last summer he ploughed for them, planted their crops and gave them technical help.

He was supported in his effort to remain on his farm by one of Zimbabwe's two vice-presidents, Joseph Msika and the local governor, Peter Chanetsa.

But it wasn't enough. Mr Stobart, his wife and three children fled after about 25 supporters of the ruling Zanu-PF party surged towards the family home, and they are now living in rented accommodation in Harare, planning to emigrate to New Zealand next January.

Until three years ago, agricultural produce accounted for 40 per cent of Zimbabwe's exports. Now it cannot sell beef to the European Union under preferential tariffs, not only because it does not have enough quality cattle left, but because the chaos allowed foot and mouth to spread across the country.

Tobacco production is down more than 60 per cent, and Zimbabwe will grow less than 10 per cent of its normal wheat production this year. "It is catastrophic," said Alan Stockil, a farmer in charge of a national evaluation committee.

"Zimbabwe will continue to slide until agriculture recovers. That is why we are gathering data for compensation for farmers. So far fewer than half of those who have been evicted have completed estimates of what they have lost. Many are too heartbroken to do so, but we are pushing them."

Out of 4,000 productive white commercial farmers three years ago, fewer than 400 remain on their land. About 300,000 black workers and their families working and living on former white commercial farms are in abject poverty, according to the union's president, Colin Cloete. They were left out of Mr Mugabe's land reform programme and are jobless, homeless and hungry.

The righting was on the wall from 2003 up to now it has been a falling spiral and no recovery.
