Whatssap ilinunuliwa na facebok na Octoba mwaka jana ilitoa taarifa yake ya kifedha kwa mara ya kwanza ikijumuisha Whatssap katika ripoti hio kwa mwaka wa fedha ulioisha June. Whatssap inakula hasara na mwaka wa fedha uliopita ilipata hasara(net loss) ya $ 232.5 milioni. Pesa iliyoingiza Whatssap kama faida ni $ 15.9 milioni pekee. Chanzo cha hizi pesa imejumuisha tozo la kila mwaka kwa watumiaji na uongozi wao umeshasema hawaoni kwa sasa kama matangazo ni chanzo kizuri cha mapato.

Lengo kubwa la whatssap kwa sasa ni kukua kuliko kuimarisha vyanzo vyake vya mapato kwa kuwaondoa washindani wake na itaanza kutengeneza pesa pale ambao watakua wamejiimarisha zaidi kwenye soko. Nikukumbushe pia Instagram ilinunuliwa na facebook na haujawekwa mpango wowote wa kutengeneza mapato bora hata whatssap.

Kwa maoni yangu Facebook ni muoga sana wa ushindani, kununua Instagram ilikuwa ni kuogopa watu kushiriki picha kupitia Instagram na kupunguza matumizi ya Facebook ambayo ni moja ya kitu kikubwa sana facebook. Walitaka kufanya kitu hiko kwa snapchat lakini jamaa wakagoma. Pia kwa whatssap, facebook alikuwa tayari ana facebook messenger lakini haikupata kuwahi kufikia mafanikio kama waliyopata whatssap na kukwepa kukaliwa kooni wakaamua kutoa $ 19 bilioni kununua kitu ambacho mapato yake hayafani kabisa na fungu walilotoa kununua. Kampuni ya komputa HP walifanya mchezo huo pia na kwa mwaka 2010-2011 pekee walitumia $ 18 bilioni kununua makampuni(acquisition) na walichokipata ni kushuka mapato na faida. Facebook wananunua kila kinachukua maarufu sasa bila kujali mapato yake.

It's all about the data
A lot of modern social apps (and non social apps) do not generate any ad based revenue. They do however collect a lot of data that is valuable to them or other companies. Think about Microsoft buying Skype or Facebook buying Instagram. Having these services allows the purchasing company to have data that they can then use to build other targeted products.
That's not to say that every start up has the same exit strategy (hoping to get bought out). Many startups have one or two founders who tend to get lucrative offers from industry to build similar or more tailored versions of the same product.
Remember that for every startup you see get famous and turn in to a bigger entity, there are several others who had potential but never made it big (and those that invested in them lost out).

So, in order for WhatsApp to be even more profitable they need you to share more and more of your intimate information which is what most people in these online conversations. So, all the metadata collected is then organised and used by them to make money elsewhere.
