Rev. Kishoka;
Let me put this way. I am desperate for results in some key areas such as transportation, efficient in delivering government services and energy. When you so desperate, you can easily overlook serious shortcomings of the individual and give the person the benefits of the doubts. So, to be honest with you I think that is what I have done with Magufuli. The relationship I have with his presidency is very transactional. Take my liberty, freedom of speech and in return build me the railways.
I supports some of his initiatives lukewarmly as I wait for the results. If he finishes the railway lines in timely fashion, I will be elated because a robust transportation system in the country will improve commerce greatly and empower our people than other government program. The same applies to the proper use of our energy sources the country us.
At heat I am a very liberal person. I love democracy, the rule of law, and personnel liberty. For example, it won’t offend me if the LGBT community organizes a parade in the streets of Dar Es Salaam. However, I have become a realistic. Now I believe that strong institutions of the country, strong democracy, and the rule of law aren’t the outcome of textbook exercise as many Tanzania think. Rather, they are the results of historical events which have happened in the country, some of them very painful. So, to me, Magufuli’s leadership style is an historical event which might help shape the way we view our leaders.
So in summary, I have decided to sacrify my values for results. I am gambling here that the good results in transportation, government services, and energy sector might be good for the country at least in a short term. However, in a long term, his leadership style might force the next generation create democratic and strong institutions rooted in the current historical events.
