Obituary: Zambia's Levy Mwanawasa

PARIS — Zambia's president was in stable condition Wednesday after being transferred to a Paris hospital from Egypt where he had suffered a stroke, a top Zambian official said.

President Levy Mwanawasa, 59, fell ill during an African Union summit in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh and was rushed to a local hospital on Sunday. A Zambian government statement Monday said he suffered a stroke.

Zambia's Vice-President Rupiah Banda said Wednesday that Mwanawasa's condition was stable and that he had been transferred overnight from Egypt to the Percy military hospital near Paris.

“He is receiving treatment for hypertension in the intensive care unit,” Banda said in a statement. No further details were given about his condition.

A French official involved in diplomacy said Mr. Mwanawasa was receiving medical care at Val-de-Grace military hospital in Paris, a frequent destination for French and foreign dignitaries.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media about the issue.

It was not immediately clear whether Mr. Mwanawasa had been transferred from Percy to Val-de-Grace hospital, and neither hospital would confirm his presence. The French Foreign Ministry declined to comment on whether Mr. Mwanawasa was in France for treatment. France has very strict guidelines governing medical privacy.

Mr. Mwanawasa, a lawyer and Zambia's third president since the country won independence from Britain in 1964, won praise from some Zambians and many Western investors and donors for free-market policies and a high profile anti-graft campaign. His corruption efforts targeted his predecessor and former mentor, Frederick Chiluba

kwa sasa narudi msituni seee you

Jamani wanasema tusubili wajipange kwa hiyo twendelee kusubili tu wajipange kitaeleweka tu.

Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has been admitted to intensive care in a Paris hospital but is in a stable condition, his vice-president said on Wednesday.

Mwanawasa is current chairman of the Southern African Development Community, which has been mediating between President Robert Mugabe and the opposition seeking to end a political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe.

Mwanawasa, 59, was rushed to a hospital on Sunday in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh after suffering a stroke just before an African Union summit. He was flown to France from Egypt on Tuesday.

"He has been admitted to Percy military hospital in Paris, France. The president's condition has remained stable. He is receiving treatment for hypertension in the intensive care unit," Vice-President Rupiah Banda said in a statement.

The Zambian leader is a favourite of the International Monetary Fund and other Western donors, who have extended billions of dollars in debt relief after his crackdown on government spending and launch of an anti-graft drive.

He suffered a mild stroke in 2006.
