Obituary: Zambia's Levy Mwanawasa

By jana alishafariki maskini, hata mie nilipata hizo habari kutoka chanzo cha kuaminika.

Kamanda wetu, Mpendwa Wetu, Lawi Mwanawasa ulale pema peponi. Amen.

Power to the People...JF Daima.

Zambian president reported dead
3 Jul 2008, 1621 hrs IST,REUTERS

JOHANNESBURG: Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa died in a Paris military hospital on Thursday after suffering a stroke earlier this week, according to a radio report in South Africa, which quoted a Zambian High Commission spokesman.

Officials in Lusaka had no immediate comment.

Mwanawasa, 59, an outspoken critic of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, was rushed to hospital on Sunday in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh after suffering a stroke just before an African Union summit. He was later transferred to Paris for treatment. "He passed on this morning," Malone Zaza, the Zambian high commission spokesman, said.

In Paris, a spokesman for the Armed Forces Health Service declined to comment. "We do not ever confirm or deny the presence of a patient in a military hospital," he said. A spokesman for the Percy Military Hospital also declined to comment.

Mwanawasa chaired the Southern African Development Community, which has been mediating between President Robert Mugabe and the opposition to try to end a political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe. His illness sidelined one of Mugabe's chief regional critics during an African Union summit at which the veteran Zimbabwean leader suffered unprecedented condemnation from some of his peers, including another neighbour, Botswana.

Zimbabwe's neighbours have been flooded with refugees after the once prosperous nation suffered economic collapse. The Zambian leader is a favourite of the International Monetary Fund and other Western donors, who extended billions of dollars in debt relief after he cracked down on government spending and launched an anti-graft drive.

He suffered a mild stroke in 2006 but said before being re-elected that year that he was fit to stand for office. If Mwanawasa is confirmed to have died, Vice President Rupiah Banda or a minister designated by the cabinet would take over for three months before elections would be held, Zambian constitutional experts said.

South Africa's foreign ministry says it cannot confirm a report that Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has died.

"I have not been able to confirm anything, we are trying to contact the Zambians," said spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa.

Talk Radio 702 reported on Thursday morning that the Zambian leader had died, quoting a Zambian high commission spokesperson. - Sapa

* Mwanawasa became vice president in 1991 after Frederick Chiluba ousted founding President Kenneth Kaunda in landmark multiparty elections.

* He stunned observers soon after winning the presidency in late 2001 by turning on Chiluba and then won vocal Western support for launching the biggest anti-corruption drive since Zambia won independence from Britain in 1964.

* He narrowly defeated opposition leader Michael Sata in a presidential election in 2006. Sata accused Mwanawasa of selling out Zambia to Chinese and Indian companies.
